Ixora coccinea f. lutea (Hutch.) Fosberg & Sachet, Baileya 23 (2): 79, 1989
syn: Ixora lutea (Hutch.)
Evergreen shrub up to 1.3 m tall; leaves opposite, sessile, oblong, up to 10 cm long, cordate or slightly amplexicaule at baseobtuse or mucronate, lateral veins 8-15 pairs; flowers yellows (in this form) in 5-10 cm wide corymbose cymes on very short peduncle; pedicel almost absent; bracts 6-8 mm long; calyx teeth minute, corolla tube 25-40 mm long, lobes 8-10 mm long, acute; stamens 4 with short filaments, anthers falling early; style exserted; fruit globose, red when ripe.
The species is widely cultivated and comes in a variety of colours but can be easily recognised by its smaller habit, sessile almost clasping oblong leaves baring reaching 10 cm, and flowers with corolla lobes usually less than 10 mm long. This yellow variety (now relegated to form) earlier uploaded by me as var. flava (which does not seem to have been a published name) has wider corolla lobes than typical and more fuller flowers.
Photographed from Khalsa College, Delhi

While trying to find the correct name for my Yellow Ixora, I came across two posts by you, with the same pictures, but different names.
Could you kindly let me know the right one.
1) Ixora coccinea f. lutea
2) Ixora coccinea var. flava
Pictures in both posts are the same.

Correct name is Ixora coccinea (Cultivated)

Thanks a lot … for a quick response.

After a long search for nearly 3 years I think I am able to hunt out the typical specimen of this species characterized by sessile oblong leaves up to 10 cm long, obtuse or mucronate; flowers bright scarlet with nearly 4-5 cm long corolla tube, acute corolla lobes 8-10 mm long. Photographed from garden of Dakpathar rest house on September 16, 2011.
The genus Ixora is often much confused and poorly understood in our databases.
Ixora chinensis at FOI I think is Ixora finlaysiana, I. chinensis has shorter corolla tube, and broader obtuse corolla lobes
Ixora coccinea (Red)  and I. coccinea (yellow) of FOI may be I. chinensis as they have distinctly narrowed leaves and obtuse corolla lobes

Rubiaceae Week : Ixora sp. Hooghly (WB):
I do hereby attach images of Ixora sp. for the theme of the month – Rubiaceae. We call this plant RANGAN in Bengali.
Besides its ornamental use and its medicinal properties it is also a host plant of the Monkey Puzzle (Rathinda amor) butterfly.
I also attach two photos featuring the butterfly one of which displays an egg (the white spot in the middle of the inflorescence) of the butterfly. I would also like to add that … of ‘ButterflyIndia’ (facebook) group helped me identify the egg of the same butterfly in the related photograph. Further, mango trees are also host of this butterfly.

Ixora coccinea var. flava from Delhi: Ixora coccinea var. flava
The yellow flowered variety photographed from Khalsa College Garden in Delhi

lovely, wonder if its a variety that does well in hot moist climate of Bengal?

I could not find Ixora coccinea var. flava either in the Plant List or at GRIN:
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/search?q=Ixora+coccinea+var.+flava+
Could you pl. clarify it ?

The var. is based on Ixora flava Lodd ex G. Don, a name missing in The Plant List like many other names
But it is also true that this as well as similar var. lutea have no formal recognition and at the most can be labelled as Ixora coccinea “Yellow”

Good set of pictures.

Good catch indeed.
I wonder how come such a beautiful plant occurs naturally at many places in Konkan and Western ghats….Yes it does attract ones attention when one spots it by roadside just everywhere esp in Konkan

my belief: it is thoroughly a native of Western Ghats besides other parts of southern India and Sri Lanka.
Requires validation; my belief could be wrong.

I meant to say…I am sure of this being native. I wonder about the nature which gives such a beautiful colour to the flowers amongst the otherwise dull not so colourful habitat.

Agreed … Indeed you had expressed it correctly earlier.

I couldn’t resist posting these.
Clicked yesterday morning in Muscat.
It was in full bloom, you could hardly see the leaves.

Ixora chinensis ‘Prince of Orange’ ??

May not even be ixora chenensis.
look at the petal shape, (rounded ends Top tropical photos versus pointed one this case)
number of petals (four in top tropical versus five here) at
https://toptropicals.com/ixora_chinensis.htm
need to go thru the taxonomic tree at http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=116686
size estimation would have helped of leaves, corolla tubes etc

May be some cultivar of Ixora coccinea L. as per comparative images and keys at Ixora
Pl. check.

yes this is Ixora coccinea

Garcinia indica (Thouars) Choisy ?

I don’t think so. Because in Maharashtra we use this Garcinia indica (Thouars) Choisy daily in cooking. It’s vernacular name is ‘Kokum’ ( कोकम) and it looks quite different.

Ixora coccinea

Yes. … is correct.

Thanks … This is a very common flowering plant available in all nurseries. Even I have 2-3 different colours of Ixora. But had never seen it’s fruits.

Thanks … Rarely fruits are seen. I have seen them.
