Zehneria umbellate?
Local Marathi name Gometi
Photographed at Sagargad, Alibag

… yes for Solena amplexicaulis (family: Cucurbitaceae).

Can it be Solena umbellata as per attachment (DeWilde_Solena_Blumea2004 (1).pdf) ?

.

Your image at link is of Solena umbellata and not of Solena amplexicaulis
as per the following:

I hope Trichosanthes costata
Solena heterophylla does not have ridges on fruit.

Earlier it was identified as Solena heterophylla Google Groups. Is this different.

I think … was right when he posted it as Gymnopetalum

Gymnopetalum chinense is now synonym of Trichosanthes costata
The things became clear when I visited Jim Corbett last year to get clear pictures and appreciated differences in flower, fruit size, shape (more elongated here) and ridges.

I think it looks different from Gurcharan Singh ji’s images from Corbett.
I think it should be Solena umbellata (Willd.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes with ridged fruit as per images herein.

Without any fruit to see in this observation, the plant, I think, has more chance to be Solanum amplexicaulis.
Maybe I am mistaking some other characteristic that points to S. umbellata.

Only one observation so far in efi as per

– This is Solena amplexicaulis [S.heterophylla]. Sending you one of my photographs taken at my farm. Also please check the archives of this group for my other photographs of this.

– I am just curious why it is called amplexicaulis? The leaf is not amplexicaulis in the picture.

Solena amplexicaulis is a highly polymorphic species with lots of variation in the shape & size of leaves and fruits and also in the length of petiole, etc.
May be that is the reason it has got several synonyms. One of the synonyms, S. heterophylla, also denotes the variable nature of leaves in this plant (for nonbotanists: hetero=different; phylla=leaves).
Dr.K.N.Gandhi worked on its nomenclature to bring out clarifications. Dr. Chakravarty, who revised this family for BSI’s Flora of India opined that “this is an extremely heteromorphic species amongst the Cucurbits” and he also suggested segregation of this taxon into many varieties and forms.

THIS IS USE FOR WORSHIP IN OUR REGION FOR NAGPANCHMI
FESTIVAL, ACCORDING TO COMMON NAME I HAVE FIND NAME solena amplexicaulis

I think Solena amplexicaulis of Cucurbitaceae family.

Agreed. Flowering generally occurs between August and October, but this year it commenced early in June and ended abruptly around the 3rd week of July. Sending a few photographs.
Please also check the archives of this group for my previous photographs of the leaves, flowers & fruit.

It seems that you are collecting a good data on phenology as well. That is great!
Thanks for sharing valuable information on the early flowering. Do you think that the early flowering is because of early onset of monsoon and good amount of summer showers.
Further, the series of pictures are very nice depicting most of the characters of the pretty climber. The amplexicaul leaves (leaves having lobes that completely surround the stem.) are clearly visible in the second and last pictures.

You could be right. This year the monsoons arrived early and has been pretty heavy in the catchment areas with 3 of the 5 lakes supplying water to Bombay already overflowing.
Currently awaiting mass flowering of the Glory Lily [Gloriosa superba].

Solena amplexicaulis Syn. Melothria heterophylla
A climber of Cucurbitaceae family.
Observed growing wild in Mulshi area Western ghats.
Both the names indicate some characters found in it.
The amplexicaul nature of the leaves which also show heterophylly i.e different types of leaf shapes.
We had discussion on this recently through …  post.
Some description…. Flowers tiny may be less than a cm. Axillary often in pira or cluster of 3-4 flowers.
Leaves 5-6 cm. Oval but of variable shapes. Tendrils present.

Simply superb pictures!  Really amplexicaulius leaves and the variation of leaves is also depicted!

It may not be Solena amplexicaulis as it is distributed in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala & Endemic as per The Cucurbitaceae of India: Accepted names, synonyms, geographic distribution, and information on images and DNA sequences by Susanne S. Renner, Arun K. Pandey. (2013).
Other species are Solena heterophylla Lour. subsp. heterophylla (syn. Melothria heterophylla (Lour.) Cogn. widely distributed all over India &

My doubt persists … with no fruit to see, why not S. amplexicaulis ?

The flowers look hairless, only the petals are hairy. That points to Solena amplexicaulis. Solena heterophylla and Solena umbellata both have sparsely hairy flowers.

These things are quite variable.
Fruit shape is the best to judge a species in Solena.

Solena amplexicaulis fruiting : 4 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (7).
Solena amplexicaulis [Gometi] was fruiting at my farm at Shahapur today. Sending a few photographs.

The flowers were very well represented in the photos

I think it should be Solena heterophylla Lour. as per DeWilde_Solena_Blumea2004 (1).pdf

Correct sir

Taking it as Solena umbellata (Willd.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes as no distribution for Solena heterophylla Lour. subsp. heterophylla as per  Review of the Genus Solena (Cucurbitaceae) AuthorsWilde, W.J.J.O. De; Duyfjes, B.E.E. Source: Blumea – Biodiversity, Evolution and Biogeography of Plants, Volume 49, Number 1, May 2004 , pp. 69-81(13).
Also as there are ridges on the fruit, it should be Solena umbellata (Willd.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

I see the fruits without angles or ridges, at least not pronounced enough. Would this not be amplexicaulis ?

Ridges are there, but seen very fine at this ripe stage. See images of S.heterophylla fruits to differentiate.
S.amplexicaulis fruit is totally different. See efi site and the publication.

Cucurbitaceae Week :: Solena amplexicaulis at Prabalgad:
Sharing few photographs of Solena amplexicaulis.
Family: Cucurbitaceae
Location: Prabalgad
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Climber.

I’ve uploaded the fruits in a separate thread. https://groups.google.com/indiantreepix/rcRuJuOR4tU

Melothria heterophylla (Lour.) Cogn.) widely distributed all over India & Solena heterophylla Lour. subsp. napaulensis (Ser.) W.J.de Wilde & Duyfjes distributed in Western Himalaya (Garhwal, Kumaon hills, Uttarakhand) as per The Cucurbitaceae of India. For differences between two subspecies, pl. see Flora of China.

Could this be Solena amplexicaulis?
Pictures taken at Kasara, Maharashtra in Aug 2016

Thanks, …, for detailed images.

Yes, Solena amplexicaulis.

I think Solena heterophylla as per images & discussions herein.

Solena heterophylla Lour. and Solena amplexicaulis (Lam.) Gandhi are 2 different species and are both accepted names in theplantlist (ver 1.1) database.
I understand that you are referring to
an excellent paper in Phytokeys (2013) by Renner and Pandey (The Cucurbitaceae of India: Accepted names, synonyms, geographic distribution, and information on images and DNA sequences) in support of the name S heterophylla, which is fine. The paper states that S amplexicaulis does not occur in the geography from where this plant is reported.
Hope it clarifies the matter for those unaware of it.

Thanks, … Yes, referring to the stated paper.
