This aster plant must be most possibly a species of Blumea; hopefully the pictures will help to ID.
Standing about 60 – 80 cm, the herb was seen growing along the ghat road at various places. 17042011GS1 a composite from Morni hills for ID: | I think its Blumea mollis If this is Blumea mollis, then the other plant I uploaded as 17042011GS1 onploaded on 18-4-2011 should be something else Blumea mollis, I think has much larger ovate-oblong leaves 5-12 cm long and up to 6 cm broad, where as this plant has not longer than 4 cm leaves; also here leaves are sessile, whereas they are petiolate in B. mollis. More so florests are tinged purple in mollis, not here. I have collected lot of specimens of B. mollis for essential oil extraction and the major difference I found in B. mollis that whole plant is aromatic while the other closely allied species B. lacera only the heads are aromatic. One other thing in the photograph the heads definitely are not in full bloom and ofcourse not yellow (by seeing the photograph) to me they appear slightly white with tinge of purple so I will go with B. mollis The leaves of B. mollis look much different from my plant
I have confirmed it from Botanical Survey of India (Dehradun) herbarium and all the specimen lying there were similar to the photos attached by you and the plants i have collected. There are lot of variations in Blumea species with lot changes with the aging of the plants.
These are also reflected by a number of species which were initially named as new species but later on combined with this one.

This is the same plant and same set of photographs as in my earlier pending post – efi thread (Hooghly : Blumea or Blumea like : yellow). About a month ago i tried to retrieve data from the net. But, Blumea is a big headache to me. Bengal Plants has 13 species, sure some are not supposed to be found in our area. F. B. I. lists 36 species + var. + a few doubtful.
According to the Bengal Plants Blumea hieracifolia DC. is in Chittagong (in Bangladesh now, i think). It is a robust or slender, simple herb, with often scape like stems – http://plantillustrations.org/on=80 (who in our group has this plant?).

Blumea hieracifolia DC should not be found in our area. But, it is the same place (a railway stn,) where i found Claoxylon mercurialis Thwaites (which should be confined in Behar of then Bengal province).
B. hieracifolia is as variable species as many other Blumea, it can be branched too – http://www.iiim.res.in/blumea_hieraciifolia.jpg (source – http://www.iiim.res.in/herbarium/asteraceae/images/).

this herb was seen yesterday (23.2.14) in a fallow field near Karjat. There was a single group amongst lots of Blumea plants. Height, about 1 – 1.5ft. Leaves whitish hairy, margins spinous tipped.
I’m not able to identify it. The closest I can get is Dichrocephala sp. but I’m not sure.

Garg Ji how do you say it is Blumea oxydonta; B.oxydonta has spiny leaf margin, it doesn’t have any such, because I physically verified; its achenes are ribbed when observed under lense, all the anthers are fertile; (oxydonta has some anthers) hence by looking at the appearance of some plants it is difficult to judge correctly; Thanks, … Sorry, I goofed up.

No sorry among us, identification of some plants are very intriguing, some are highly variable, then we must go for the decisive characters; some needs lens help without that we may go wrong. even there are differences between floras; your efforts are highly appreciable; but identifying without observing actual specimens some times is a challenge, that’s why many taxonomists ask for specimens.
