RESEARCH AND
FIELD EXPERIENCE

a.
Floristic Study and
Ethnobotany (1992-1994) Floristic
survey was done in the Narayanapatna region of Koraput district of Orissa.
During the work different ethnobotanicalinformations were collected from the Kutiakandh tribe of Orissa. The area belongs to one of the most backward
tribal regions of Orissa and is presently the most naxalite inflicted region in
Orissa.

b.
Floristic Survey and Ecological studies in Eastern Ghats of Orissa (1994-1996):Extensive floristic survey was
made in various parts of the eastern ghats of Orissa. Besides documenting the
flora of the region, biomass and energy content in different plant species was
also calculated in the laboratory. The energy expenditure, total material flow,
biomass and energy flow patterns in forest based village ecosystems was studied
with their different ecological implications. Developed two models on forest
based village ecosystem sustainability and natural resource management.

c.
Floristic Survey, Ethno-botany and Taxonomic Study
in Sikkim (1996 – 2002): Floristic andTaxonomic study in particular reference to Sikkim Himalaya was
undertaken. Detailed of ‘The Flora of
Kabi Sacred Grove and The Flora of Kyangnosla Alpine Sanctuary’ has
been worked out. Contributed the detail description of three familiesGrossularicaceae,
Polygonaceae, andCommelinaceaeto the state flora of Sikkim. Undertaken
Seven exploration tours in North
Sikkim [ Lachen, (2700m), Thangu
(4200m), Gurudangmar (5500m), Lachung (
2800m) Katao (4600m); Five
exploration tours in Kabi Sacred grove
(1900m); Six exploration
tours in Kyangnosla Alpine Sanctuary (
from 3100m to 4500m) of east Sikkim, Two
exploration tours in Tendong Reserve Forest (1700-2700m) and collected more
than 6000 plant specimens including several interesting plant records for
Sikkim and India. Documented the detailed flora of the Kabi Sacred
Grove of North Sikkim andKyangnosla
Alpine Sanctuary of east Sikkim.
Contributed the complete description and collection of all species
of familiesGrossulariaceae, Polygonaceae, andCommelinaceaeof
Sikkim. The detailed taxonomic account of the family Polygonaceae of Sikkim worked out with two new combinations {Aconogonon rude (Meissn.)
S.S.Dash&P.Singh&Persicariabirmanica
(Gage) S.S.Dash&P.Singh}.

d.
Floristic Survey, ex-situ
conservation, Botanic garden Education in BGIR (2002-2008): Floristic research in particular
reference to the flora of the NCT region, development of woodlands and
arboreatum, ex-situ conservation of rare and indigenous tree species and
outreach education programmes of BGIR, carried out during this period. Also
carried out a project Digital Flora
of National Capital Territory Region. During this period, under taken about
nine exploration tours in the
National Capital Territory Region including the ridge forest of Dehli,
Barkhallake of the Haryana, Hindon basin of Ghaziabad district and collected
more than 3500 plants specimens. Developed the herbarium and a thematic
medicinal plant garden in BGIR.
Conducted four education
programmes of BGIR, assisted in implementation of conservation
programmes
of BGIR.Developed twenty-five
replicas of the different forest ecosystems of India for woodland
&arboretum
development with
indigenous tree species. Undertaken
eight plant collection tours to
different parts of country, including Andaman Islands, Dang forest of Gujarat,
Amarkantak& Jabalpur regions Madhya Pradesh, Kalinga hills of Eastern Ghats
etc., and collected more than 10,000 plant seedlings of about 170 species.
Presented one paper “An Approach to the integrated education
programme in Botanic Garden of Indian Republic, India” in International Botanic Garden
Education Symposium at Oxford University, Oxford, UK in 2006. Also attended the
training workshop of the Darwin Initiative OSSSU Project held at Chengdu, PR
China during 15-19 Oct. 2007.

e.
Floristic Survey, Taxonomic study in Arunachal
Pradesh (2008-2011): Floristic account of Kurung kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh was
worked out. This
is one of the most inaccessible districts of Arunachal Pradesh with an
altitudinal variation of 550 m to 5500 m.
Many of the portions of the district were never survey earlier and survey first
time during the project. Seven extensive
floristic surveys covering tropical to alpine region (ranging from 550m to
4200m altitude) conducted in Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh and
collected about 4100 plant specimens. Documented the floristic composition
early recovery plant community structure of shifting cultivated areas of Kurung
Kumey district, which is of its first kind of study in the region. The study resulted in documenting 1391
species including more than 75 species new to Arunachal Pradesh and 9 species
new to India. Exploration of Vadse hills of Kurung Kumey district revealed 267
alpine species. Most of the species are having interesting affinities with
adjacent phytogeographical regions. The
Vadse hill of Arunachal Pradesh has never been visited by any botanist.
