Unarmed shrub, small thick lobed leaves: Please id GE-12-Jan-2013-A: Plant seen growing wild, outskirts of Chennai. Unarmed , wide branching, small thick shallow lobed leaves, the branchlet ends were little bit sharp. Flowers or fruits not seen. Please help id This is Gmelina asiatica L. of Verbenaceae. Tamil names: நிலக்குமிழ் ; முள்குமிழ் There are similarities in the leaf growth, size; and the pointy branchlets; This is not Gmelina asiatica (for me) as the leaves look quite different I am doubtful too. Please match with my earlier post. I think the posted plant is indeed Gmelina asiatica, as idyed by …
Its leaves are variable in shape and size. FoC describes “…leaf blade ovate to obovate, 3-5(-9) X 2.2-3 (-8.5) cm….margin entire or 3-5-lobed…”.

Could be Gmelina asiatica I too agreed with … yes. the first time i saw it i was may be seven years old.
i called it the square yellow flower on a thorny bush and its still a square yellow flower on a thorny bush. only now i know its binomial name for the last fifty years!!! (if you look into its face down the tube, it has a square outline, because of 4 petals i guess) No doubt about that! Mulkumizhi in Tamil. Very common shrub in scrub jungles & Guindy National park, Chennai. . Lamiacae: Gmelina asiatica L.: 1 image.
