As per efi thread:
H. verticillatus has cladodes 2.5cm or longer, stiff, very sharp pointed bifid or rarely trifid …accidental prick is very painful, stinging. Plant about a meter tall or less, stout. Flowers light to deep shade of violet.
In H. tentaculatus cladodes are up to 1.5cm, soft, hairy, tip inconspicuously bifid, non-prickly.
Three varieties can be recognised by cladodes…
In var. plumosa cladodes are covered in dense soft white hairs, inflorescence which is actually terminal part of stem and branches, looking like plume.
In var. neilgherryensis  terminal spike of cladodes and flowers is densely packed, meaning by, internodes are very small. And ofcourse cladodes not plumose.
Var. tentaculatus  seen in suitable habitat in Surat, is having cladodes sparsely hairy, nodes widely spaced.

Haplanthodes are seen a plenty at Aarey road Mumbai last several weeks (8.12.09). I am confused with this species is it H. verticillata or H. neilgherryensis? Request correct ID Please.

H. verticillatus are blue coloured flowers … “blue” similar to that of Hemigraphis latebrosa,

Thank you … for the ID clarification and links.
The colour variations and mismatch in what is dark blue and dark to light purple is evident in the links.  For instance although in the write up of H. verticillatus in FOI it is mentioned dark blue the pic is dark purple. In FOS the pic of H. neilgherryensis is light blue and H. verticillata is light purple with dark violet streak inside.
Again a minor spelling variation in two books – it is H. verticillata in FOS and H. verticillatus in I. Kehimkar’s book. Thanks once again for the detailed links.

i came across this plant all over in the forest at Conservation Education Centre, Goregaon E, Mumbai on 8th Nov 09.
Is it Haplanthodes neilgherryensis from Acanthaceae family?

I believe this to be Haplanthodes neilgherryensis … however, this may not be the accepted name … not much data found on internet except in one of the FOS books of Ingalhalikar ji.

Much better would be Haplanthodes tentaculatus … FOI has doubts about the name … doubt not yet resolved.

the pic at FOI looks little diff to me in the sense the leaves/ stem are more blackish green than those in my pics. hence the kokani name may be  ‘वाढलें कालें किरायतें ‘ . May be the plants that i photographed are yet to mature.

Yes it is Haplanthodes tentaculatus (L.) Majumdar, the flowers color can be whitish to bluish. if the cladodes are densely hairy it is Haplanthodes plumosa (T. And.) Panigr. & Das.

Presently I have observed this in Mahabaleshwar; Mulshi. Also seen on many forts like Sinhagad,Purandar Karnala etc.

As per recent revision of Acanthaceae in India at KEW, we have now two species in Haplanthodes. . . H. verticillatus and H. tentaculatus with three inferior taxa — H. t. var. tentaculatus , var. plumosa and var. neilgherryensis. (Haplanthus neilgherryensis is now recognised as Haplanthodes tentaculatus var. neilgherryensis … this epithet is rampantly misspelled in literature, I found on internet.)
This Genus has Cladodes substituting leaves in flower bearing part.

In H. tentaculatus cladodes are up to 1•5cm, soft, hairy, tip inconspicuously bifid, non-prickly.

Flowers can be violet to whitish with dark brown striation deep in throat, more on upper side.

This batch of photos are from Surat city outer part, 09 01 2020 morning.
Habit is about one meter tall, much branched, not strong, staying erect when crowded, flowering spike always erect. Basal leaves as big as hand, size getting smaller upwards, ultimately turning into cladodes.
Leaf, stem usually dirty green, sometimes red too.

From where these keys have been taken ?

…, from EFI page, from paper by J R I Wood. And descriptions in JCB herbarium, IBIS pages helped too.
Eye opener was pricks sustained by H. verticillatus in Tungi near Lonavala MH, then came the Paper on revision of Acanthaceae in India with good account of “Haplanthus neilgherryensis” which made things easier. I went through my collection and found out H. t. var. plumosa (or plumosus ?) recorded from matheran which is very distinct in having plumose cladodes.

Based on your observations as above and earlier work, I reviewed all our posts in efi site.
I have recommended for corrections of a few by reposting, which you may pl. pursue.
One thing I observed after going through all the posts is that cladodes are pointed upwards in Haplanthodes tentaculatus (Nees) Majumdar or its two other varieties, while these are pointed either straight or downwards in Haplanthodes verticillatus (Roxb.) R.B.Majumdar
