Anaphalis are indeed difficult to identify. Providing a key for identification of common species.
Keys for common Anaphalis species in West Himalaya, based on Naithani (1984):

1a. Involucral bracts acute, spreading in flowers

  2a. Head diameter 1.2-2.5cm

3a. Leaves 1.2-5 cm long; involucral bracts ovate-lanceolate

4a. Lower leaves spathulate half amplexicaule….A.cuneifolia

4b. Lower leaves obovate-spathulate, contracted at base.. A.nepalensis

    3b. Leaves 5-10cm long; involucral bracts ovate-lanceolate acute…A.triplinervis

  2b. Head diameter 0.6-0.8 cm

5a. Stout roots, plants woody based, twisted, with many short branches having linear    spathulate leaves, involucral bracts with a broad brown claw….A.xylorhiza

5b. Root woody but stem not twisted, many, involucral bracts white ….A.royleana

1b. Involucral bracts, obtuse, erect in head

        6a. Lanceolate leaves

7a. Leaves thin, lower surface cinnamon red or grey…A.margaritacea

7b. Leaves thick, lower surface white …A.adnata

        6b. Linear leaves

            8a. Leaves 3.8-5 cm long

9a. Basal lobe long, decurrent, involucral bracts elliptic oblong, 2-2.5 mmlong…A.busua

9b. Basal lobes narrow, apiculate, involucral bracts linear oblong, 4mm long …A.virgata

8b. Leaves 1.2-2.5 cm long, basal lobes short …A.contorta

HOWEVER, to follow keys plant specimens, rather than pics, are more desirable in addition to basic ground in Plant Taxonomy.

Anaphalis : 1 post by 1 author.

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Anaphalis

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

I have added list of Anaphalis species known in India based on Karthikeyan et al. 2009.

Thanks a lot, …
Matches well with species given in other litratures/ floras etc. except for a few varieties here & there.
However, Anaphalis araneosa DC. & Anaphalis nubigena DC. from Forest Plants of Eastern India By Amal Bhusan Chaudhuri (1993) & FRLHT Indian Medicinal Plants Nomenclature Database with images/ herbarium, distribution, local names etc. are not there in Karthikeyan et al. 2009, as both sources seems to be quite old.

As far as A. Alata is concerned, FOC calls Anaphalis alata Maximowicz as Anaphalis sinica var. alata (The valid publication of Anaphalis alata Maximowicz var. viridis Handel-Mazzetti (Acta Horti Gothob. 12: 245. 1938) simultaneously created the autonym A. alata var. alata, which has priority at varietal rank over A. sinica var. remota Y. Ling (Acta Phytotax. Sin. 11: 103. 1966), hence the need for this new combination.), while as per The Plant List Anaphalis alata Maxim. is a synonym of Anaphalis sinica var. remota Ling.
We may decide on what to keep here.

A. araneosa DC. is synonym of A. busua (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) DC. and A. nubigena DC. is synonym of A. nepalensis (Spreng.) Hand.-Mazz. in Karthikeyan et al. 2009.
We may keep the name A. sinica var. remota as also suggested in the link which is a reliable source

.

Pl. go through Anaphalis (‎‎‎‎‎Asteraceae (Compositae)‎) page with images of species (done by me) in efloraofindia.

If you find any mis-identification, pl. let us know. If anybody can send images of other species of this genera (for incorporation in the website), if any, it will be really nice.

Also, if anybody is interested to take up the activity of inserting images on efloraofindia pages from efloraofindia posts, pl. let us know.
