commonly known as: cinderella weed, nodeweed, pig grass, synedrella
.
Native to: central America, tropical South America; naturalized in paleotropics
.
Here are features which will never fail you
1. Calyptocarpus has low growing, procumbent to ascending, mat forming habit often rooting at nodes, rarely rising more than 15 cm,
Synedrella tall erect habit up to 80 cm tall.
2.
Leaves the most crucial are not longer than 3 cm, pale green, thinner,
faint 3 basal vein and broadly ovate
.
In contrast leaves of Synedrella are longer than 3 cm, dark green in colour, more prominent basal veins and ovate to elliptic in shape.
.
Apart from trailing habit and smaller leaves I don’t find any consistent character. Both (Calyptocarpus vialis and Synedrella nodiflora) may or may not have three basal veins, heads may be more than one in both.
.
Synedrella: Plants annual, erect or ascending, not rooting at nodes; heads aggregated; disc florets 4-12; cypsellae of ray florets with lacerate winged margins.
Calyptocarpus: Perennial, prostrate or decumbent, rooting at nodes; heads solitary at each node; disc florets 10-20; cypsellae of ray florets not winged
.
S. nodiflora: Plants erect, up to 1.5 m tall, dichotomously branches; leaves usually at dichotomies, 3-10 cm long, 1.5 cm broad; heads 1-4 ; invol. bracts 1-2, foliaceous, ray floret achenes with lacerate wings
C. vialis: Plants prostrate, rooting at nodes, irregularly branched; leaves 3-4 cm long, 2-3.5 cm broad; invol. bracts 4, ray floret achene not lacerate

Confusion between Calyptocarpus vialis and Synedrella nodiflora solved (for me atleast).
I was lucky to find both on same day in Bangalore and appreciate crucial differences between two.

Perhaps no two plants are as confused by most of us as these two. Many differentiate the two by prominent three veins from base, but they occur in both although thinner in Calyptocarpus. Heads of two look similar, involucre bracts of Calyptocarpus are 4 in two whorls, In Synedrella they range from 2-5 and may be in one or two whorls. Achenes are with two diverging awns in Calyptocarpus, in Synedrella most florets (disc) have similar 2-awned achenes although few (fertile ray) have achenes with scales (which you are likely to miss.
Here are features which will never fail you
1. Calyptocarpus has low growing, procumbent to ascending, mat forming habit often rooting at nodes, rarely rising more than 15 cm, Synedrella tall erect habit up to 80 cm tall.
2. Leaves the most crucial are not longer than 3 cm, pale green, thinner,
faint 3 basal vein and broadly ovate
. In contrast leaves of Synedrella are longer than 3 cm, dark green in colour, more prominent basal veins and ovate to elliptic in shape.
3. All heads in Synedrella are in sessile clusters, but in Calytocarpus there are always a few on long peduncles bearing solitary head, in addition to several sessile in cluster.
Here are some photographs for illustration.

Thank you very very much … for this clarity.
Will check my uploads at flickr and eFI soon and do any necessary correction.

Thanks a lot … i used to wonder for elongated stalk of inflorescence, in some Synedrella! but i was looking Calyptocarpus– which was not taught to me.
Wonderful experience!

I think … is right. Calyptocapus vialis is a much shorter plant with mostly prostrate to decumbent branches rooting at nodes and most importantly three almost equally strong veins from leaf base.

Thanks … Now please also upload Synedrella nodiflora, I am still not sure how to differentiate the two conclusively.

beautiful pictures as always esp the close up of the flower. Are there also a few plants interspersed of Synedrella nodiflora which have erect stems and elliptic leaves rather than triangular leaves. Also are there interspersed plants of Alternanthera spp too?

Many thanks … for validating the ID.

On going through the Newsletter_0907.pdf at the link provided, I am not comfortable with my ID of Calyptocarpus vialis. It must be just Synedrella nodiflora. The low-growing and spreading habit led me to believe otherwise. The PDF illustrates differences between Calyptocarpus vialis and Synedrella nodiflora with descriptions and photos. I also checked at FOI where … and … photos are featured.
Thanks once again … Will make changes in flickr photostream soon after this fortnight.

Thank you … for your reply. learned an imp feature at the FOI link in your reply ‘A prominent difference is that the leaves of Synedrella nodiflora have 3 parallel veins’ Thanks
All the uploads by you today are spectacular and very pleasing to the eyes in this intense summer.

Yes it is Synedrella nodiflora.

Here are the differences I have dug out
S. nodiflora: Plants erect, up to 1.5 m tall, dichotomously branches; leaves usually at dichotomies, 3-10 cm long, 1.5 cm broad; heads 1-4 ; invol. bracts 1-2, foliaceous, ray floret achenes with lacerate wings
C. vialis: Plants prostrate, rooting at nodes, irregularly branched; leaves 3-4 cm long, 2-3.5 cm broad; invol. bracts 4, ray floret achene not lacerate.
Both may have leaves thee veined from base, but I think leaves can easily help. they are larger and atleast twice as long as broad. In C. vialis they are almost as broad as long or slightly less broader.

This is a wild herb found in a shady place outside the boundary wall of a house. There were only a few. The flowers are apparently smaller than Ixora buds.
Species : ???
Type : wild herb, shady & moist area
Plant size : 24 inches from ground level
Leaf blade : 10 cm X 4 cm
Date : 19/02/2012, 10.02 A.M. & 23/02/2012, 1.41 P.M.
Place : Nalikul (Hooghly), West Bengal

I regret that my camera (10 MP, 5X compact) fails to generate better and larger photographs of this plant though i tried a number of times. The florets are too small to be magnified considerably by the macro feature of my camera.

Looks good for Synedrella nodiflora.

Thank you for confirming the ID

To me this looks like Synedrella nodiflora

Thank you Sir for the ID. I recorded it to my desktop.

This thread has two sets of photographs, one set was uploaded by me and the other was … I am not sure if both the plants are same. Three concerned species are –
  1. Synedrella nodiflora (L.) Gaertn.
  2. Calyptocarpus vialis Less.
  3. Sclerocarpus africanus Jacq.
The Plant List has another unresolved – Sclerocarpus africanus Jacq. ex Murray. An illustration of this plant can be found in –
The identity can be seen – illustratedgarden.
While Bengal Plants features the 1st one Flora of British India features 1st and 3rd. I couldn’t find Calyptocarpus vialis Less. in these books.
  • In Synedrella nodiflora (L.) Gaertn., heads are sessile, axillary and terminal
  • In Calyptocarpus vialis Less. , heads seems to be terminal, I am not sure, please check –

  2. http://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/specimens/img/ (source – http://w3.biosci.utexas.edu/prc/)
  • In Sclerocarpus africanus Jacq., I am not sure –

  2. mozambiqueflora
  3. zimbabweflora

Synedrella nodiflora :: Yeoor Hills, part of SGNP :: 29 DEC 19 : 12 posts by 6 authors. 5 images.
Yeoor Hills  … part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Date: December 29, 2019 … Altitude range: about 100 ft (30 m) to 1575 ft (480 m) asl
Synedrella nodiflora  (L.) Gaertn.

For me the ID is correct.

Yes sir !

I think Calyptocarpus vialis rather than Synedrella nodiflora as per keys and details herein.

Thanks … The plants in colony were standing about 2 to 3 feet tall. I read through the characteristic differences between the two plants at eFI while coming to ID of Synedrella.
I think Calyptocarpus vialis would appear like ground covering, may be at the most a foot high.
Let us wait for validating comment(s).

What you said is exactly …, there is no way to S. vialis, its nodiflora only,
I too collect both,

I guess … is correct. Please look at the leaf pattern!

Thanks, everybody, for your views. I think that is our strength.
I was not aware of the height and to me plant appears to be ascending and not erect. Further the following key as per efi thread confused me:
All heads in Synedrella are in sessile clusters, but in Calytocarpus there are always a few on long peduncles bearing solitary head, in addition to several sessile in cluster”
Here in the last image, one can see a few flowering heads on long peduncles. So this portion of the key has to go away.

What is the final ID. These plants are see n here also. That is why I am interested.

Final id is Synedrella nodiflora

Sharing some pictures for ID shot at Chobhar, Nepal on 24 August 2013 at 4500 ft.

Triumfetta sp.?

Any chance of Sclerocarpus africanus (Heliantheae- Asteraceae).
S.africanus in eFI.

Looks like matching to some extent but the altitude habitat
differs very much.
Picture shot at  around 4500 ft but it says 200 m.only.

I think Calyptocarpus vialis as per Confusion between Calyptocarpus vialis and Synedrella nodiflora solved (for me atleast)-GSSEP05/123

I guess it is matching with Synedrella nodiflora (L.) Gaertn. (provisionally accepted name)
which is the only plant listed in Nepal as per the following link.
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=110&taxon_id=132087

No, it does not match with images at Synedrella nodiflora

Confusing. Calyptocarpus is not on Nepal list.

Please check for species of Bleinvillea

Thank you for the ID hint.

I guess it is matching with Blainvillea acmella (L.) Philipson.
But flower color is white as per FoI.
CoL page showing accepted name as Spilanthes acmella (L.) Murray (provisionally accepted name) and synonym  Blainvillea acmella (L.) Philipson (synonym)
But the google page showing different plants for these ID.
Your opinion please .

Not matching with images of Blainvillea acmella
I still feel it to be closer to images at Calyptocarpus vialis

Synedrella nodiflora; confirmed by Prof. You Sheng Chen (South China Botanical Garden)
