SK122OCT03-2016:ID : 13 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (5) Interesting, never seen…hope the id is concluded !! Looks like some species of Saussurea (Asteraceae). Flower heads are young. Nothing comes to mind. Best to wait and see what flower-heads look like when open.
Plants are not always conveniently in flower (or fruit) when we come across them. However, it is worthwhile including images of each species at different stages of development within the reference photos for that species – though one needs to be familiar with the plant first.
It is seldom worthwhile collecting pressed specimens of a plant not in flower or fruit to take to a herbarium for identification – most will be rejected. Hard enough and at times uncertain enough when flowers or fruit are present.
My first job as a field botanist in the UK was as team-leader of a survey of riverside vegetation in Wales. Our objective was to attempt to record every flowering plant (and sometimes bryophytes) along 500m stretches of riverbank. It was hardest in the spring when most plants had not reached flowering stage. Fewer clues available than when a plant is in flower or fruit – although for the UK there is now ‘The Vegetative Key to the British Flora’ – which I have not been able to get into using much yet.
It is going to be an awfully long time before the flora of Nepal or the Himalaya as a whole will be known sufficiently well for a comparable guide for identifying plants based upon leaf characteristics to be prepared! Since it is not yet in a flowering stage leaves look like Himalaiella deltoidea (DC.) Raab-Straube (provisionally accepted name) syn: Saussurea deltoidea (DC.) Sch.Bip. (ambiguous synonym).

Thanks, … But does not match with images of Saussurea deltoidea at
Saussurea candolleana Wall. ex DC. (accepted name) ??? It has become very difficult to identify this plant !
Enclosing Nepal list if it could do some help for ID.
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=110&taxon_id=129338 Enclosing some images from the book Flora of Kathmandu Valley, Stainton and some links for validation.
Flora of Kathmandu Valley listed only one Saussurea deltoidea (DC.) Sch.Bip. around Kathmandu valley but the Plant List says Himalaiella deltoidea (DC.) Raab-Straub is the accepted name.

https://efloraofindia.com/2019/01/11/himalaiella/ What are the species reported from your area? Not recorded in the Flora of Mizoram What are the species of Saussurea reported with keys? Looks different as per images at Pl. post high res. images to check the details. I think it is the lower portion of Himalaiella deltoidea (DC.) Raab-Straube only. Your book link says ‘Lower leaves lyrate-pinnatifid, with terminal lobe deltoid-hastate.
Pl. see GBIF specimens and Himalaiella deltoidea (DC.) Raab-Straube
I could not find anything closer even from species listed in Flora of China. .
