16 July, 2015. Thank you for sharing. Of 32 species listed in BSI how do you determine the species? Thank you … for pointing me to this list. I guess we could begin by looking at the geographical distribution of the species and shortlist the ones for my area/altitude (advanced search on BSI page should work efloraindia.nic.in, but somehow on my browser I couldn’t get it to work). Of course there could still be a few to choose from (Collett lists five from Shimla).
Following Collett, I thought the specimen I was seeing was closer to D. glabra but since I am a non-botanist too, I seek expert opinion on this. It is of course always possible too that an odd species from here is not well documented and hard to identify with the help of photographs. the BSI search doesn’t work in my browser also. I do not know what your species might be. Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Dioscoreaceae) It must be Dioscoria bulbifera I would very much appreciate to know which feature(s) in the attached images determine(s) the species, be it bulbifera or glabra. Thank you … I saw the flowers yesterday on one of the climbers (and am hoping that its is not a different Dioscorea species from the previous one). Does this correspond to the D. bulbifera? Please advise. Yes. I saw the first fruits today growing on the leaf axils and thought I’d share some images with you. I have been watching and photographing this climber flower through June and July. Re: Dioscorea bulbifera : 3 posts by 1 author.

Dioscorea sp. : 7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (2) Is it Dioscorea villosa
Leaf size 35-45 cm At Alibag 4 Sep,2015 Leaves of D. bulbifera L. may attain 10 inch x 10 inch (ref. Haines) and may look similar. But leaves here are larger than that. FBI has one species D. sativa L. having 14 inch leaf. But D. sativa L. is now synonymous with D. villosa L. which feature much smaller leaf as per following sites –
BSI thinks FBI’s D. sativa is D. esculenta L. but FoC informs leaves are much smaller in D. esculenta L.
I do not have any idea of what this species can be. Please ignore my earlier reply, it was simply useless. In attached images leaf is much broader than long or can say that broader as longer, leaf size varies with ecology of surroundings or habitat, there is no define key on leaf size for Dioscorea. In every Flora (publication) we have different leaf sizes. If the stem is winged then this is D. alata sans the leaf size. I guess Dioscorea bulbifera L. Dioscorea bulbifera
Dioscorea bulbifera I will also go with Dioscorea bulbifera L.

… tubers (as VEGETABLE) … … tribal folks of Melghat Forest … ethnoleaflets <http://www.ethnoleaflets.com/leaflets/edibles4.htm> This looks different from images and references at Dioscorea belophylla (Prain) Voigt ex Haines Ok, thanks …, I will correct my notes. I feel that … plant is correctly identified as D. belophylla. The leaves of this species are variable and his images have the typical hastate shape not seen in Dioscorea bulbifera. You may be right on account of cordate leaves as Flora of Pakistan says ‘Leaves usually opposite, simple, 7.5-13 cm. long, 2-9 cm broad, variable, ovate, cordate or hastate with round basal lobes or deltoid, entire, acuminate, glabrous 9-nerved; petiole 6.5 cm long. According to Flora of Pakistan the leaves are usually opposite. It is true … leaves are alternate. I am in no way questioning that it is not being found in western ghats. No, of course not. I just wanted to show the more typical leaf form. If more than one species of a family have variations, and to add to confusion, if these are quite similar looking species, then the descriptions alone may not help in reaching ID. I am not good at this D. belophylla, but the variations can cause confusion for sure.
In the photo that we see the leaves, each of them appear facing us. I do not know whether such an arrangement can be called alternate leaves. It makes me think that the opposite leaves are absent. Whether leaf arrangement itself is variable in this species, needs to be validated. . Climber for ID : Kasara Ghat, Way to Nasik : 18NOV21 : AK – 010:
