the flowers’ spike (usually seen pendulous) reminds me of *Dioscorea bulbifera* ♀ … the vegetative growth seen among the flower spikes is popularly known as air potato OR air yam.
The leaves of the climber are probably not seen here, please confirm.

Agree with …. This is Dioscorea bulbifera [Kadu Karanda]. An upturned leaf is seen in the right forefront. Please check the archives of this group for my photographs of the flowers, fruit & bulbils of this.

Yess Dioscorea bulbifera. Twig is actually broken from top and some insect eaten leaves are visible.

*Dioscorea glabra? ABJUL01/13 : 9 posts by 4 authors. 2 images.

Which Dioscorea is this? D. glabra perhaps?
Above Mcleodganj, Dharamshala, HP
1800m
16 July, 2015.

Thank you for sharing. Of 32 species listed in BSI how do you determine the species?

Thank you … for pointing me to this list. I guess we could begin by looking at the geographical distribution of the species and shortlist the ones for my area/altitude (advanced search on BSI page should work efloraindia.nic.in, but somehow on my browser I couldn’t get it to work). Of course there could still be a few to choose from (Collett lists five from Shimla).
Following Collett, I thought the specimen I was seeing was closer to D. glabra but since I am a non-botanist too, I seek expert opinion on this. It is of course always possible too that an odd species from here is not well documented and hard to identify with the help of photographs.

the BSI search doesn’t work in my browser also. I do not know what your species might be.
Here is the type herb of D. glabra Roxb. in KEW – http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000098218
There are many other herb. as well, please search in
KEW.

Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Dioscoreaceae)
Sec. Opsophyton Uline.
There are 4-5 varieties but for varietal identification flowers and tubers need to see.
It is commonly found and widespread species throughout the India.

It must be Dioscoria bulbifera

I would very much appreciate to know which feature(s) in the attached images determine(s) the species, be it bulbifera or glabra.

Thank you …

I saw the flowers yesterday on one of the climbers (and am hoping that its is not a different Dioscorea species from the previous one). Does this correspond to the D. bulbifera? Please advise.
4 images.

Yes.

I saw the first fruits today growing on the leaf axils and thought I’d share some images with you. I have been watching and photographing this climber flower through June and July.

It is Dioscorea bulbifera, but in Western Ghats the tubers are eaten as a vegetable. They are not poisonous.

Is it Dioscorea villosa
Leaf size 35-45 cm
At Alibag
4 Sep,2015

Leaves of D. bulbifera L. may attain 10 inch x 10 inch (ref. Haines) and may look similar. But leaves here are larger than that. FBI has one species D. sativa L. having 14 inch leaf.

But D. sativa L. is now synonymous with D. villosa L. which feature much smaller leaf as per following sites –
  1. https://gobotany.newenglandwild.org/species/dioscorea/villosa/
  2. illinoiswildflowers
BSI thinks FBI’s D. sativa is D. esculenta L. but FoC informs leaves are much smaller in D. esculenta L.

I do not have any idea of what this species can be.

Please ignore my earlier reply, it was simply useless.

In attached images leaf is much broader than long or can say that broader as longer, leaf size varies with ecology of surroundings or habitat, there is no define key on leaf size for Dioscorea. In every Flora (publication) we have different leaf sizes.
Kindly check for Dioscorea wallichii Hook.f. which has similar kind of leaves (long=broad), also check the link below:
http://www.kew.org/science-conservation/plants-fungi/dioscorea-wallichii-kruo

If the stem is winged then this is D. alata sans the leaf size.

I guess Dioscorea bulbifera L.

Dioscorea bulbifera

Dioscorea bulbifera

I will also go with Dioscorea bulbifera L.

It is Dioscorea sp. found in western ghats with starchy tubers. the mature plants with leaves and inflorescence are needed for species confirmation.

I think this appears close to images and details at Dioscorea bulbifera L. and as per FoC illustration and Nature loves you.

Dioscorea bulbifera L.

This superficially appears close to images of Dioscorea villosa as per POWOFOIIBPEFI.
But POWO (however, shows many specimens of its syn. Dioscorea sativa L.) and CoL does not give its distribution in India.
FoPI also lists Dioscorea sativa L.
I feel there is some taxonomic confusion. It may be Dioscorea bulbifera L. (syn: Dioscorea sativa var. elongata F.M.Bailey; Dioscorea sativa var. rotunda F.M.Bailey as per POWO and Dioscorea sativa L., nom. cons. as per CoL) only.

Dioscoreaceae (yam family) » Dioscorea belophylla
Synonym: Dioscorea glabra
dy-oh-SKOR-ee-uh — named for Pedanios Dioscorides, 1st century Greek pharmacologist
bel-oh-FIL-uh — spear or arrow-like leaves
Native of: India, Pakistan
Edible use (WILD):
… tubers (as VEGETABLE) … … tribal folks of Melghat Forest … ethnoleaflets <http://www.ethnoleaflets.com/leaflets/edibles4.htm

This looks different from images and references at Dioscorea belophylla (Prain) Voigt ex Haines
Appears close to images and details at Dioscorea bulbifera L.
Needs correction in Flora of India also.

Ok, thanks …, I will correct my notes.

I feel that … plant is  correctly identified as D. belophylla. The leaves of this species are variable and his images have the typical hastate shape not seen in Dioscorea bulbifera.
Triangular leaf lobes are also typical.

You may be right on account of cordate leaves as Flora of Pakistan says ‘Leaves usually opposite, simple, 7.5-13 cm. long, 2-9 cm broad, variable, ovate, cordate or hastate with round basal lobes or deltoid, entire, acuminate, glabrous 9-nerved; petiole 6.5 cm long.
As per keys in Flora of Pakistanleaves are opposite in D.belophylla, while these appear to be alternate here.
Pl. see at K 2226 16 October 2019

According to Flora of Pakistan the leaves are usually opposite. It is true … leaves are alternate.
Please see the link from iNaturalist which shows D. belophylla as commonly seen in Western Ghats.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/74846311

I am in no way questioning that it is not being found in western ghats.

No, of course not. I just wanted to show the more typical leaf form.

If more than one species of a family have variations, and to add to confusion, if these are quite similar looking species, then the descriptions alone may not help in reaching ID. I am not good at this D. belophylla, but the variations can cause confusion for sure.
In the photo that we see the leaves, each of them appear facing us. I do not know whether such an arrangement can be called alternate leaves. It makes me think that the opposite leaves are absent. Whether leaf arrangement itself is variable in this species, needs to be validated.
