Euphorbiaceae :: Chrozophora prostrata MK MAR-002 2016 : 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (5)
Name: Chrozophora prostrata Dalz. (Syn.: C. plicata)
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Location: Tirupathi suburbs, AP
Date: 04 Feb 2016
Is this plant rightly identified?

Correct id.

This appears to be Chrozophora prostrata Dalz. However, the nature of ovary and fruits are necessary for correct identification. If they are stellate-pubescent then it is C. prostrata. If they are lepidote then it may be C. rottleri. Please check.

For me the ID is correct.

Chrozophora species so far in efi

How about C.plicata ?

efi page on Chrozophora plicata

I think this is Chrozophora prostrata Dalzell.

Please confirm it will be Chrozophora prostrata (Euphorbiaceae)

Chrozophora sp.

Could it be Chrozophora plicata?

Might be ma’am, but possible only for familiars without complete information,

I had suggested the same. Leaves are looking similar.

Okay.

Chrozophora plicata from Delhi:
Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A. Juss. ex Spreng., Syst. veg. 3:850. 1826
syn: Croton plicatus Vahl; Chrozophora prostrata Dalzell & Gibson

Stellate-wooly prostrate herb with several branches; leaves nearly as long as broad, upper surface folded (plicate); flowers unisexual; stamens 15 in two whorls, petals pink; capsules stellate wooly, without scales.
Photographed from Vikas Puri Delhi, growing in waste lands.
Common name: Giradol

Beautiful photographs as usual. The plant reminds me of Prof. BGL Swamy who used to bring this plant, Bacopa munneri, Ammania buccifera etc for the M.Sc examinations in 70,s

Chrozophora rottleri as per another thread.

This needs to be resolved.
If Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A. Juss., 1826 (basionym Croton plicatus Vahl, 1790) and C. rottleri (Geiseler) A. Juss., 1826 (based on Croton rottleri Geiseler, 1807) are synonyms, the former should be the correct name as it is based in earlier basionym.
If two are distinct species as listed on the Plant List, we have to know the differences to choose our plants from North India and Western Ghats.
I hope … can throw better light on this based on their treatment of Indian Euphorbiaceae.

A reply in another thread:
“The real Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. does not occur in India. It is confined to Africa and Middle East. What is given as C. plicata in Indian floras are now known as Chrozophora rottleri (Geisl.) A.Juss. ex Spreng.

I strongly feel that it is C. plicata, whether we follow Flora of Malesia
Chrozophora (nationaalherbarium.nl) or follow key given by …
Plants are prostrate (not erect), smaller (less than 3 cm, not larger), plicate , dark green (not light green), stigma orange (not red), fruit with spreading hairs (not flat)

Yes, Chrozophora plicata.

I think there is some confusion here.

Flora Malesian gives the following difference (It also does not have Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. (like India as per Balakrishnan ji)):
Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. is often confused with C. rottleri, because one of the first leads in Prain’s key (1918) asks for the length of the inflorescence relative to the surrounding leaves. The inflorescence should be shorter than the leaves in C. plicata and longer in C. rottleri. However, they are only longer in C. rottleri when the inflorescences are old and have shed their seeds. The best character to separate both species is in the stellate hairs on the ovary/fruit, these hairs are flat, 2-dimensional, almost lepidote in C. rottleri (lacking the patent hairs), and normal, 3-dimensional in C. plicata. Furthermore, the leaf blades in C. plicata are usually smaller (less than 3 cm long) and of a much darker green (at least when dry).

It also gives Staminate flowers 4–6 mm in diam., yellow; calyx white, united part c. 1 mm high, lobes 3.2–4 by c. 1.2 mm; petals 3.7–3.8 by 1.5–1.6 mm; androphore 3.3–3.8 mm long, basal 1.2–1.3 mm without filaments; filaments 0.3–0.8 mm long; anthers 0.9–1.3 by c. 0.7 mm, yellow.
I can not see the nature of hairs from the low res. image, as per differences above. However, the stigma is yellow here as given for C.rottelri in Flora Malenesia.
Earlier … has stated:
“The real Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. does not occur in India. It is confined to Africa and the Middle East. What is given as C. plicata in Indian floras are now known as Chrozophora rottleri(Geisl.) A.Juss. ex Spreng. …”

I see stigma to be yellow only as per other observations at C.rottleri
I find that as per keys provided by … in this post, C.prostrata is now given as syn. of Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. as per WCSP. So if this is correct, C.prostrata is now given as syn. of Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng. is very much available in India and … plant may very well be this one.

Nice pictures Sir, happy that you found this in a waste land, but I think this is not common in our area…at least I have not encountered this till date..

Chrozophora rottleri

I have seen this plant in erect habit.

The Plant List considers C. plicata and C. rottleri to be distinct species. GRIN also records C. plicata. Perhaps it would be useful to know differences between two species to correctly place my plant and those uploaded by other members as C. rottleri.

Yes

I think Chrozophora plicata (Vahl) A.Juss. ex Spreng., as per images and details herein and at Chrozophora.

I think yes.
