Small correction in subject line- Albizia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr. (Please validate)

Here the main vein of leaflets is starting marginally and ascending along the margin – this gives us the identity.  Yes, Albizia chinensis.

Mimosaceae tree for identification 250712MK03:

I saw this large tree of Mimosaceae in a rain forest fringe near Valparai. I could not see any flowers and the tree was in distant. The tree was of more than 10 metres height. The pods measures 15-20cm longer. Please help me to identify this.
Date: 13 July 2012
Place: an Estate in Vaalparai, TN

Alt.: 930 m asl

At first glance it looks like Albizia stipulata, although the resolution in the pics is not good enough to see close up.

Is this Albizia chinensis (Osbeck.) Merr.?

A. chinensis is the same as A. stipulata.

Chamba tree for id – Albizia julibrissin…??: Is this Albizia julibrissin or some variation..(since it is not Pink
flowered)…

Location Chamba
Altitude 1200 mts
Habit tree
Habitat – Roadside (Planted??)
Season – May – June
Height – 15-20 mts

Should be checked for Albizia chinensis which is similar to A. julibrissin but has very large stipules visible on younger branches, narrower leaflets (2.5 mm as against 3-5 mm) and greenish-white to yellow stamens.

I too think that this may not be A. julibrissin because the stamens looks like greenish white. In, A. julibrissin, the stamens are purplish in color.

It would be A. chinensis, as … suggested.

Caesalpiniaceae ?
Habit: Tree
Habitat: Hill forest

Location: Chittagong Hill Tract

Flowering: May

Albizia sp. May be Albizia odoratissima

I think it’s Albizia chinensis

I would also go for Albizia chinensis, except that I don’t see any tinge of pink in the flowers. Is it possible to get pure white flowers in this species?

Any pod pictures … That will help in ID.

Let me check, if found will send

this seeems to be Albizzia sps.

Thanks, … Agree with you.  Pl. Check comparative images in efi site

I think closer to images at Albizia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr. as per comparative images at Albizia

Yes …, The leaflets and the infloescence pattern suggest A. chinensis which occurs in the E. Himalayas. The stipules are not visible here which are characteristically very conspicuous in this species.

Pl. verify with comparative images at

According to the efloranepal only this is matching as per the elevation.

I think this is Albizia julibrissin.

Elevation is matching but floral colour does not look like matching.

Flower color also reported to be creamy. Matching with other characters!

Thank you …! Albizia julibrissin Durazz. Did not find any image with creamy flower .

Just forget about flower color. Please see whether other characters are matching.

This is in any case not A. chinensis which will have conspicuous foliaceous stipules.

I am more inclined towards Albizia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr. as per images herein compared to images at Albizia julibrissin Durazz
I find that diagnostic stipules in Albizia chinensis (Osbeck) Merr. falls off quite early with new leaves.

This is as per comparative images at Albizia

A. julibrissin?

A. julibrissin flowers seem to be pink. But the flowers here are of different colour. Hence, it could be A.chinensis. But I am not an expert .

For identifying Albizia species, features of stipules, length of leaves and pinnae, number of leaflets per pinna, foliar glands, leaflet size, shape, venation, pubescence and inflorescence pattern are required. Without knowing all these we can keep on guessing.

Please help me with the Santali name(s), if any, of Albizia chinensis Merr. in native script, along with spellings in English.

You can find it in reference of “English to Santali Dictionary” by By ANDREW CAMPBELL: I have same book with multiple sources listed below, very lucky to find this book free of cost, i am thinking of creating a list of all Santali name in Ol Chiki and its transcription in one excel sheet soon. I am working on it i will soon sent it.

Google play book
Google books
Book author name cited
See in page number 206 of the book. It is written (Siris ᱥᱤᱨᱤᱥ) same as it is spelled in Hindi. Not exactly this species, is cited in the book. But we will commonly call them siris. Other species are having just some words added with siris you can notice.
Conclusion, in Santali we will call Albiza chinensis commonly as:

ᱥᱤᱨᱤᱥ Siris

Thank you very very much, … for the name and pointing to resources available on the internet.
I too use A Santali-English dictionary by A. Campbell, of the Santal mission.
I searched for Albizia and Albizzia – however no results were shown.
Now that you pointed out siris, I searched for siris, and surprisingly got ..
jan siris for Albizzia odoratissima !! … Arkive

Please help with the prefix jan in jan siris.

Sure sir, Santali name with transcription for Albizzia odoratissima would be ᱡᱟᱱ ᱥᱤᱨᱤᱥ Jan Siris

I think the image is of Albizia julibrissin Durazz as the stamen colour is pink as per keys at Flora of China.

Thanks very much … for this validation.
I have corrected my notes.

In Albizia chinensis in Maharashtra the stamen colour is as shown in the image.

Thanks … for your validation.
I now remember that Shrikant ji had given me Albizia chinensis as the ID.
I and Prashant were with him during this exploration.
…, I am revising my notes again.
I suppose Albizia julibrissin is not distributed in India, perhaps only planted for ornamental purpose.

What are the keys in Flora of Maharashtra ?
Does it say pink stamens in A.chinensis ?

Two species are really close and can be easily confused as can be seen from FoC illustration.

Pl. see the colour of stamens in observations at Albizia chinensis

At the moment the Flora books are not available to me. As far as I know A. julibrissin does not have distribution in this area in the wild. All my collections of the large tree with large stipules have stamens whitish at the base and changing to pink. This tree is very familiar from forests in the Western Ghats.
To my knowledge A. julibrissin is a smaller tree, often cultivated, whose stamens are a much brighter pink.
I’m sorry at present I have only fieldwork to go on and not the documentation you require.
