Alysicarpus hamosus ?

efi page on Alysicarpus hamosus & Alysicarpus longifolius

no it does not look like A. longifolius nor A. homasus
check for A. roxburghiana..

It looks Alysicarpus bupleurifolius (L.)DC. the leaf is variable in this species, standard yellow, fruit slightly moniliform, 2-3 jointed. (Ref.Gamble)

Further, it is not A. procumbens= A. hamosus because this specis have broader leaves and laterally compressed fruits when dried it give rough tubercled appearance.

There is one species called A. heterophyllus (Syn. A. vaginalis var. heterophyllus which has both rounded, elliptic and very long lanceolate leaves. Thus fruits and bracts are very important characters for identification.

It is Alysicarpus vaginalis (L.) DC. (Syn. Hedysarum vaginalis L. = Hedysarum cylindricum Lam. = Alysicarpus cylindricus (Lam.) Desv.)

Thank you for confirming as Alysicarpus vaginalis sir.

Photographed at Shahapur. Is this A.heyneanus or A.vaginalis?

for identification of Alysicarpus species following things plays a very important role
stipules
calyx length during fruiting
fruit shape (wheather monoliform or smooth)
fruit surface (rugos/ reticulate/ smooth)
it would be very difficult to guess the species without referring the above characters.

This is Alysicarpus vaginalis, but it is interesting. let me know the exact locality of this.

pl. check for A. heterophyllus (A.vaginalis var. heterophyllus)

efi page on Alysicarpus heterophyllus

In A. longifolius inflorescence a dense spicate raceme, 15-30cm long; in images inflorescence is lax. In A. heterophyllus leaves are always uni-tri foliate as name predicts heterophyllus. Therefore, chances of A. vaginalis are high; leaves simple, elliptic lanceolate, oblong or linear oblong, cordate at base, 0.5-8.0 x 0.5-3.0cm, Raceme 5.0-8.0cm long.
The major difference in A. vaginalis and A. longifolius are pod symmetry and constrictions in between.

This is Alysicarpus vaginalis var. vaginalis.
A. longifilius has terminal racemes up 30 cm with shiny primary bracts

Alysicarpus ¿ species ?
Not sure whether the aspects seen in two photos help in getting to species ID.
at Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary on September 24, 2011

Does look like one, sir. but a point in the fabaceae key states that “Glumaceous calyx, twice the pedicel length or more” this is not true in the photograph….as against” Calyx not glumaceous, less than half of pedicel length” which seems to be true in this photograph will indicate that this is a Desmodium spp.
Pls correct if wrong, I am not a ‘Taxonomist’ and may have got things in the wrong sense 🙂

Looks like Alysicarpus longifolius.

Yes … it is Alysicarpus species. for A. vaginalis the pedicel should be very hairy. also there are numerous species of Alysicarpus and very difficult to identify by looking at flower. for identification the stipules and the calyx of fruit and fruits itself are very important.
only an Alysicarpus expert can surely say about the species.

I agree; thank you very much, …
