Nice pictures … This could be Butea monosperma var. lutea. It is a Red Listed (threatened) taxon.

Was this the find during your Narmada Parikrama?
Great catch Esp. the close ups

Many thanks … for showing yellow coloured palash flowers.

Immidietly after narmada parikrama, I went to Chhindwada .
on the way Little before C`nwada I was shown this tree.
In the forest nursary they have made many saplings of yellow Butea.
Nearby is Ramakona forest – fantastic forested area which you would love.

Yellow “Flame of the Forest” : Attachments (1). 29 posts by 15 authors.
Came across this unique tree with Yellow flowers as compared to the regular bright orange flowers of the Palash or the Flame of the Forest
This picture was taken at Seoni in Madhya Pradesh, next to the Pench Tiger Reserve in the second week of March 2010

When I was at Seoni more than 3 decades back, I also saw yellow palash ahead of Barghat. … the then dfo ( he later rose to be the PCCF) was with me, and when he told me about it, we turned back about 10 km. to enjoy the spectacle. Nehru had this plant in Teen Murty Bhawan. I dont know whether it is still there.

Useful Hindi link on Peela Palash.
http://aarambha.blogspot.com/blog-post_11.html

I have observed this plant at Bhandara district. there were people who says there is one more variety known as SAFED PALASH ie white palash.
i wanna know is the yellow butea same as white or another form of butea?

The Hindi link given by … has the reply to your query.

The yellow Palash is only a mutation of colour as I am told. I have been gifted few saplings of ‘Yellow’ and ‘white’ Palash but I doubt if they will produce unusual flowers. As I understand you can not reproduce it, you can only protect and enjoy such rare mutations. The dry orange flowers as they fall down turn yellow, and the yellow flowers as they fall appear white. I have trekked several times in remote jungles to see ‘white’ palash only to find yellow on tree and white on ground.

Surely another such tree is also found at a resort namely, Mowgli’s Den near Turia Gate of Pench Tiger Reserve, Off. Khawasa (Nagpur-Jabalpur Rd.) where I was a resort manager few years back.

Butea monosperma (first and most known. It was previously called Butea frondosa)

This is further divided into 2 varieties-
Butea monosperma var. monosperma– the typical variety is the tree that we all see everywhere Butea monosperma var. lutea– yellow flowered Butea
The white flowered Butea is NOT raised to any variety level and should be considered just an aberration or variant (not VARIETY- which is a taxonomic term) of the typical species Butea monosperma var monosperma.

I would suggest that seeds be procured of such color forms and distributed to nurseries and individuals interested in maintaining these unusual colors. While all seeds are unlikely to generate the unusual colors, some are likely to generate like individuals, especially if such trees are isolated from red/orange flowered individuals. Here in the US, we have had good success growing yellow-flowered Delonix regia from isolated yellow-flowered trees. I suspect similar results can be achieved with Butea. Of course, grafting could be used to propagate plants with more certainty, though I’m not certain of the success rate on Butea

Thanks … for posting this. I think many of us have heard of yellow Palas but first time I am observing the nice clear photo.

We are going again this April to the resort and I have sought their support to collect as many seeds of this tree as possible and send it across to us and also to plant some in the resort itself. I am also looking for a list of plants and trees that could be grown in this area of Seoni which would attract most butterflifes and birds and provide the details to the resort so that they can make a complete garden for butterflies and birds. Looking forward to inputs from the treepics group on this

how about the Hindi article which says that white butea is a creeper?

Small or medium sized trees- Butea monosperma.
Yellow flowers- Butea monosperma var. lutea.
Large woody Climbers
Flowers white, in 20-60cm long terminal panicle- Butea parviflora
Flowers scarlet or flame colored, in 20-30 cm long racemes- Butea superba.

(Source: Flora of Madhya Pradesh, Vol. 1. BSI)

… resoursefully gave a beautiful answer with reference. Butea monosperma do have a very very rare white flower variety which is due to some genetic abberation and it’s a tree. The climber you are refering to is Butea parviflora as said by …

I am thoroughly confused. Nobody has mentioned or seen a white butea monosperma TREE. … has mentioned that the yellow ones look white when they fall down. You are right about Butea parviflora which was mentioned by … and in the Hindi article. I would be grateful to know if anybody has seen a WHITE butea monosperma Tree. I assure you that I will stand corrected

Good to hear that the tree will be propagated!
As I’m here in the US, I will leave recommendations for additional bird and butterfly-attracting plants to local people more familiar with local conditions.

I had written I have seen white palash tree in Thane, flowering. I will check it out if it is still there. As it was in one private compound.
The person had cut it short which still was about 10 to 12 feet tall with thick stem.

I have also heard about white flowered Butea tree. Once I visited to Nagpur and in Vardha road saw remains of two uprooted trees. I was told that one was yellow flowered Butea and another was white flowered Butea. The person claimed that … purchased both trees at very high price for Tantra activities. He came by special jet to Nagpur.
At the same spot I found yellow flowered Butea tree.

I agree with you I too have seen this plant in Shantiniketan in Birbhum district of West Bengal couple of years ago during winters. At that time there was no flower on the plant hence I could not take a picture of it. It was located in a personal garden but our family friend told me that it was a wild plant and got into the personal estate when the person brought the land to build his bunglow. As described by him the flower looks same to that of normal “Palash-Ful” (Bengali for Butea monosperma) only that is bone white in colour. I never knew this plant could bear white flower this was the first time when I came to knew about the fact and I really got astonished.

I have photograph of White Palash,
One of my friend from MP has send three photographs.
with white flowers, with its close up and full tree.
which may interest you

May some edaphic characters influance it ????????

Thank you for sharing this lovely and rare photograph of white palash with all of us.

Thank you … for pictures of the white palash.
After following discussions on this rare variant palash, I looked for any images that might be there on the internet, but could not find any.

Now your pictures clearly show the white flowers, sometimes with a faint yellowish tinge.

With your permission, may I post these photos to Tropical Flowering Tree Society website, with credit give to you, of course?

Butea monosperma white variant I’ve also seen growing in the Income tax office premises at Balaghat (M.P.). The old people has a belief that this variant is medicinally important for the treatment of leucoderma. Did you see any report from other places???. I’m not sure.

Any relation of climate change to the color of butea monosperma turning yellow?: One of my friends pointed me to this link and i would be grateful for your opinion on it (regarding the scientific validity of the claim etc):
http://www.bhaskar.com/palash-saffron-yellow-flowers-n…
Yellow Butea Monosperma is otherwise well described/documented ( independent of climatic effects ) http://pathabhavanpraktoni.net/main/?p=2084

– I am not Botanist or specialist on this topic but it is interesting and need justification.
If my field observations are concerned than we came across such individual plants in southern parts of Rajasthan. And also a question arise that if the coloration changes due to rise in temperature then there should occur major changes in all the saffron flowers of Butea in the hot parts of Rajasthan where lot of habitats are facing micro-climatic changes especially when it matters with temperature rise……!!!!!!!!!!

– Can you please send a translation of the article. I am interest as I have some experience in GHG emissions and climate change.

– I was thinking of copy pasting the Hindi text onto google translator and then further modifying their output and presenting it to you.
The bottom line in the news-piece was just the documentation of an observation ( with images) and a hypothesis ( around currently yellowing leaves of palash and association with climate change ). It may need further study as pointed out by the others.

– The variations in color of Butea flowers depend on many factors. By seeing Butea flowers from distance one can say with confidence about the water level or about last years rainfall. In Chhattisgarh near Dudhawa Dam region you can find Butea with nearly yellowish flowers. Because of high water level due to presence of big dam, Butea is showing different color. In the same area Shorea trees are dying prematurely due to same reason.

Just to add. I have documented seventeen different colors of Butea flowers and surprisingly every type of Butea color is of special significance in Traditional Healing. They differ in medicinal properties-the Healers claim.
Hoping young researchers will come forward to conduct research on this unique aspect.
During last visit to forest I identified Butea population as 15 th type but the Healers traveling with me said it is 12 th type. May be I have to check my eyes. 😉

Dhak ke teen Paat

here in Maharashtra people say Palashache paane teen…

Beautiful flowers of Flame of forest. The second last photo shows the single seeded pod…. monosperma

Golden flame of forest

what is its binomial… certainly not monosperma.. the beans look as if they each have 5 -6 seeds… do they?

Agreed … there should have been 5-6 seeds, because the ovary has 5-6 ovules. But invariably all ovule abort except one at the tip of pod that matures as seed. The basal (flat, seedless) part of pod acts as wing to carry the falling pod away from mother tree.

I used to wonder about the pods of the tree with golden flowers, as it was different from the non golden tree.
is it a different species?

I thanks..but I was referring to what … has submitted just above..here in this same thread as the golden flame of the forrest… just scroll up a little… its different from the B. monosperma… look at the picture number 3 in … submission… the beans look like they have multiple seeds… pic is labelled “Golden Flame of
the Forest Tree – Fruit.jpg 124K View Download” … that is what I was asking … about…

… pictures are not of Butea. They look like Erythrina to me.

I think that … is Correct as the mentioned pictures are most probably of Erythrina sp. and not of Butea.

updates on bombax ceiba and butea monosperma:
I was on 2 days trip to Murbad-Shahpur area (edge of western ghats) and observed that the only single tree of Butea monosperma was flowering and also bombax ceiba was flowering throughout the trip. Is it the right schedule or this flowering was little early?

It is little early in general. Nevertheless, the microclimate of the area plays a major role.

I agree it is a bit early but I have been observing Butea flowering in latter half of Dec last few years.

I wonder, where is the change heading to? we had rains till mid of October and now this early flowering of deciduous trees.

VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE (mixed thread):
I am sure , you are familiar with a flower, commonly known as Flame Of the Forest. Valmiki calls it Kinshuka or Palasha in his Ramayan. Scientifically it is known as Butea monosperma syn Butea frondosa.
Attaching an imge of KINSHUKA. You may like it.

And there is a Hindi proverb ‘Dhak ke teen paat’ which means worthless or fruitless effort and you come back to the original position to restart your efforts.

Flora Picture of the Year 2013 : Aarti Khale : Attachments (1). 5 posts by 3 authors.
My Flora Picture for the Year 2013 is this picture of Flame of the Forest, Butea monosperma taken in Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand.
This was taken during our visit in March 2013.
It was a single tree in full bloom, with different birds Parrots, Mynas, enjoying the flowers.

Thanks … for showing us the beautiful symbol of efloraofindia. It’s so mesmerising.

Nice picture, … – aptly known as the flame of the forest!

Thanks … I can imagine when many trees are in bloom at the same time…..it would really look as the forest is on fire!

For last one year or so I was working on the plants mentioned by Tagore in his songs. There are some 60 plants mentioned by him in his songs. In my project I take an image of the plant and print a song (in which this plant is mentioned) on this image. If there are 60 songs, where BAKUL is mentioned, these are printed separately on 60 images of BAKUL.To me it is quite interesting.I used to send those to my friends who understands BANGLA language. Some of my friends liked it. Recently I requested for images of PARUL and SYANDAN (as I did not have images of these plants with me and the plants are not available near my place.)through internet. … sent me images of PARUL. She suggested that English translation of these songs with the images of the plants will benefit others who can’t read BANGLA. On my request my friend Gen S K Sen has translated a song where PALASH and CHAMPA are mentioned. I am attaching an image of PALASH with English translation of the song. I intend to print the same song on an image of CHAMPA.

Sharing an image of a brilliant Butea monosperma set against the stark early-morning sky.
The flower, especially the outer surface, is very soft and downy.
Photographed today (24.1.15) morning in Chinchoti.

very nice but googling map… shows this north of Bombay
in a sanctuary of sorts and the land is this dry as in your pic one
does the ecology / environ change so drastically from the northerbn fringes of the western ghats???
looks desolate and in sorry state… bothered me
hence the comment

Chinchoti is an offshoot of the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and is popular for its waterfalls in the monsoon. This photo is from the open scrubland that dominates the lower reaches of the trail. The upward ascent leads into a mixed-deciduous habitat.
From what I’ve seen, the deciduous Butea monosperma does remarkably well in such an open, dry ecosystem. The tree in this photo has retained a fair amount of foliage that will eventually disappear at the peak of the flowering period (in March).

very nice. i have always wondered who/what eats up the seeds as it did in these pictures. does not look like the pod opened up and released the seeds.

…, wonderful post showing many details!! The branching in one of the picture is unusual to me..

it seems this tree sprouts branches if hurt or if it gets deep enough a scratch!!
there used be on old tree in Victoria memorial ground that had gnarled branches
about 3 feet from the ground ..that seemed out of place, since the usual// normal
bifurcation etc were at least 10 feet above the ground level…
if i go there  this week i’ll take some pictures for you.
MAY BE OTHER MEMBERS can find such unusual starts of branches too and tell us.

Thank you very much … The unusual branching, I believe just as Usha di does, is mostly due to cutting of tree by the locals.

Nice photographs !!!  The main culprits eating the seeds are Rose-ringed Parakeets and Three-striped Palm Squirrels. Sending a few photographs.

…, thank you very much for this info. Wonderful pictures with the three-striped palm squirrel in action.

Thanks … that answered it. it also seems they are interested in something in the flowers too? insects or is it the nectar?

This reminds me Dol (Holi) at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan where I studied M. Sc.

Butea monosperma seedling

Thanks, …, for out of the box additions.

very heartening. my question- does it survive transplanting, did this one?
I am asking because i  may have a chance to remove and transplant a couple of these seedlings from a public park but am not sure if they survive it. so was waiting to ask around. what a serendipity that you showed your case now. thanks. looking forward to your reply

Santali names of Butea monosperma (Lam.) Kuntze:

I found the name ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱫ murut for Butea monosperma (Lam.) Kuntze that you have listed in your post to eFI.
I found another name ᱵᱟᱦᱟ in listed in Wikipedia. Please help transcribe this word in English.
I found murup, which must be a variant of murut that you listed, in A Santali-English dictionary by A. Campbell, of the Santal mission, please help me with the name murup in Ol Chiki script.

Yes sir definitely,
Murut – ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱛ
Murud – ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱫ
Murup – ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱯ
flower – ᱵᱟᱦᱟ
ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱫ ᱵᱟᱦᱟ = Murud flower
Actually myself from Odisha State, we pronounce this flower  as ᱢᱩᱨᱩᱫ ᱵᱟᱦᱟ maybe people living in other states have those names pronounce in different way.

Does ᱵᱟᱦᱟ transcribe to the English word “flower” ?

Yes Sir, ᱵᱟᱦᱟ will be the translation of Flower.
