Came across this unique tree with Yellow flowers as compared to the regular bright orange flowers of the Palash or the Flame of the Forest
This picture was taken at Seoni in Madhya Pradesh, next to the Pench Tiger Reserve in the second week of March 2010
When I was at Seoni more than 3 decades back, I also saw yellow palash ahead of Barghat. … the then dfo ( he later rose to be the PCCF) was with me, and when he told me about it, we turned back about 10 km. to enjoy the spectacle. Nehru had this plant in Teen Murty Bhawan. I dont know whether it is still there. Useful Hindi link on Peela Palash. I have observed this plant at Bhandara district. there were people who says there is one more variety known as SAFED PALASH ie white palash. The Hindi link given by … has the reply to your query. The yellow Palash is only a mutation of colour as I am told. I have been gifted few saplings of ‘Yellow’ and ‘white’ Palash but I doubt if they will produce unusual flowers. As I understand you can not reproduce it, you can only protect and enjoy such rare mutations.The dry orange flowers as they fall down turn yellow, and the yellow flowers as they fall appear white. I have trekked several times in remote jungles to see ‘white’ palash only to find yellow on tree and white on ground. Surely another such tree is also found at a resort namely, Mowgli’s Den near Turia Gate of Pench Tiger Reserve, Off. Khawasa (Nagpur-Jabalpur Rd.) where I was a resort manager few years back. The white flowered Butea is NOT raised to any variety level and should be considered just an aberration or variant (not VARIETY- which is a taxonomic term) of the typical species Butea monosperma var monosperma. I would suggest that seeds be procured of such color forms and distributed to nurseries and individuals interested in maintaining these unusual colors. While all seeds are unlikely to generate the unusual colors, some are likely to generate like individuals, especially if such trees are isolated from red/orange flowered individuals. Here in the US, we have had good success growing yellow-flowered Delonix regia from isolated yellow-flowered trees. I suspect similar results can be achieved with Butea. Of course, grafting could be used to propagate plants with more certainty, though I’m not certain of the success rate on Butea Thanks … for posting this. Now your pictures clearly show the white flowers, sometimes with a faint yellowish tinge. ID: – i think yellow palash is often found in vidharbh region. i observed it in Wardha two year back. i had also heard of white palash in wardha while i was on tour in that region. i visited the same spot but unfortunately that tree was not flowering that time. By seeing Butea flowers from distance one can say with confidence about the water level or about last years rainfall. In Chhattisgarh near Dudhawa Dam region you can find Butea with nearly yellowish flowers. Because of high water level due to presence of big dam, Butea is showing different color. In the same area Shorea trees are dying prematurely due to same reason. Just to add. I have documented seventeen different colors of Butea flowers and surprisingly every type of Butea color is of special significance in Traditional Healing. They differ in medicinal properties-the Healers claim.
Hoping young researchers will come forward to conduct research on this unique aspect. The second last photo shows the single seeded pod…. monosperma Golden flame of forest what is its binomial… certainly not monosperma.. the beans look as if they each have 5 -6 seeds… do they? Agreed … there should have been 5-6 seeds, because the ovary has 5-6 ovules. But invariably all ovule abort except one at the tip of pod that matures as seed. The basal (flat, seedless) part of pod acts as wing to carry the falling pod away from mother tree. I used to wonder about the pods of the tree with golden flowers, as it was different from the non golden tree. I am sure , you are familiar with a flower, commonly known as Flame Of the Forest. Valmiki calls it Kinshuka or Palasha in his Ramayan. Scientifically it is known as Butea monosperma syn Butea frondosa. Attaching an imge of KINSHUKA. You may like it. And there is a Hindi proverb ‘Dhak ke teen paat’ which means worthless or fruitless effort and you come back to the original position to restart your efforts.

My Flora Picture for the Year 2013 is this picture of Flame of the Forest, Butea monosperma taken in Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand. This was taken during our visit in March 2013. It was a single tree in full bloom, with different birds Parrots, Mynas, enjoying the flowers. Thanks … for showing us the beautiful symbol of efloraofindia. It’s so mesmerising. Nice picture, … – aptly known as the flame of the forest! Thanks … I can imagine when many trees are in bloom at the same time…..it would really look as the forest is on fire!

For last one year or so I was working on the plants mentioned by Tagore in his songs. There are some 60 plants mentioned by him in his songs. In my project I take an image of the plant and print a song (in which this plant is mentioned) on this image. If there are 60 songs, where BAKUL is mentioned, these are printed separately on 60 images of BAKUL.To me it is quite interesting.I used to send those to my friends who understands BANGLA language. Some of my friends liked it. Recently I requested for images of PARUL and SYANDAN (as I did not have images of these plants with me and the plants are not available near my place.)through internet. … sent me images of PARUL. She suggested that English translation of these songs with the images of the plants will benefit others who can’t read BANGLA. On my request my friend Gen S K Sen has translated a song where PALASH and CHAMPA are mentioned. I am attaching an image of PALASH with English translation of the song. I intend to print the same song on an image of CHAMPA.

Sharing an image of a brilliant Butea monosperma set against the stark early-morning sky.
The flower, especially the outer surface, is very soft and downy.
Photographed today (24.1.15) morning in Chinchoti. very nice but googling map… shows this north of Bombay
in a sanctuary of sorts and the land is this dry as in your pic one does the ecology / environ change so drastically from the northerbn fringes of the western ghats??? looks desolate and in sorry state… bothered me hence the comment Chinchoti is an offshoot of the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary and is popular for its waterfalls in the monsoon. This photo is from the open scrubland that dominates the lower reaches of the trail. The upward ascent leads into a mixed-deciduous habitat.
From what I’ve seen, the deciduous Butea monosperma does remarkably well in such an open, dry ecosystem. The tree in this photo has retained a fair amount of foliage that will eventually disappear at the peak of the flowering period (in March).

very nice. i have always wondered who/what eats up the seeds as it did in these pictures. does not look like the pod opened up and released the seeds. …, wonderful post showing many details!! The branching in one of the picture is unusual to me.. it seems this tree sprouts branches if hurt or if it gets deep enough a scratch!! Thank you very much … The unusual branching, I believe just as Usha di does, is mostly due to cutting of tree by the locals. Nice photographs !!! The main culprits eating the seeds are Rose-ringed Parakeets and Three-striped Palm Squirrels. Sending a few photographs. …, thank you very much for this info.
