Saw this tree in bloom on 16/3/13 in Lalbagh. Thought it to be Saraca asoca and didn’t pay much attention since I’ve seen those a number of times before in Mumbai.
There were some green pods lying down below the tree, didn’t know which tree they belonged to.
While going through my pictures, thought this could be Castanospermum australe and the pods might belong to this tree.
Kindly validate. Yes looks like Castanospermum ausrtale Yes, looks like Castanospermum australe to me too. I had posted the pictures of the flowers some time back ( I don’t know how to give the link!). I haven’t seen the pods though. Thanks for confirming the id.

In Jijamata Udyan, the flowers are very high up, you can only photograph the ones fallen down.

at Veermata Jijabai Bhonsale Udyan on May 9, 2010 is it flowering yet. at what age doe it do that. apparently Bangalore has a few. nice example of cauliflory when it does flower. look forward to it FOI shows the flowers; I will have to check the flowering period through Google search.

Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Dhakuria lake, Kolkata Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type-Urban Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- Tree Height/Length- 35 feet Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- feather compound usually without terminal, narrow smooth pointed According to the leaf pattern looks like Sapindus mukorossi but images are blurred and not so clear. It is not soapnut, it may be some Meliaceae tree
Pl. check with images at Swietenia macrophylla is this black bean?

From Rani Bag Mumbai. Huge tree. No flowers were visible on the tree ….may be they were very high Pictures of flowers fallen on the lawn below. – Yes .., this is Castanospermum australe A. Cuhn. , Australian chestnut. A very rare tree. I had uploaded the same last year in mid March. Had managed to capture a few flowers in the thick and high canopy. Yes, it is difficult to see the flowers in the canopy due to the unusual canopy of the tree and trees surrounding it ! – Castanospermum australe A.Cunn. & C.Fraser ex Hook. as the name suggests, the seeds of this plant should be similar to that of chestnut.

For ID Confirmation 280412 SS1: Castanospermum australe from Trivandrum city: Known as Black bean or Moreton Bay Chestnut, it is native to the east coast of Australia and Pacific islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

The genus Castanospermum belongs to the Fabaceae family and has only one species – Castanospermum australe, commonly referred to as the Black Bean or the Moreton Bay Chestnut. Thanks for the ID, …! Surprised to find this exotic australian species planted on the roadside. Probably the builder/developer might have planted these 2 trees in front of their business center. Not seen anywhere else on that stretch apart from these 2.
