Pongamia pinnata?:
I found some of these Pongamia pinnata trees fruiting in Panhala during Dec 2010 trip
Apart from the conventional shape of the fruits some round fruits were also observed. Is it normal or unusual? Is the tree ID correct? I have never seen this earlier.

-For me it looks like Millettia pinnata ( syn. Pongamia pinnata) only. I verified the leaves and fruits of the tree in front of my house. They match. On this tree the galls are usually formed especially on leaves. Most of the time one can see deformed leaves with galls. Perhaps the spherical formations in the photograph may be initiation of such galls at the end of the fallen fruits base. But, I am not sure.

Two types of galls are commonly seen in Pongamia pinnata: one with elongated swellings on leaf-surface, caused by Eriophyes cheriani; and the other with globose, hard, 5-8 mm dia., spherical structures that are often mistaken for normal fruits, caused by Asphondylia pongamiae (Source: Mani, M.S. 1965. 260411RV1 – tree for ID from Secunderabad:
Please help in identification of this tree.  I am not a botanist and
therefore cannot describe it in detail using botanical terms.  It was a tall tree with many of the flowers at different branches.  Found in Secunderabad.

– Millettia pinnata Refer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pongamia_pinnata

Milletia pinnata and Pongamia pinnata refer to the same plant. They are synonyms. The differences you are mentioning are between Pongamia pinnata (syn: Millettia pinnata) with short thick pods and white flowers and
Millettia peguensis Ali  (syn: Millettia ovalifolia sensu Kurz pp) with purplish flowers and long flattened hairy pods.
The above plant is Pongamia pinnata (syn: Milletia pinnata). Some authors consider Millettia pinnata as accepted name.

Genus Pongamia Vent is Conserved name. monotypic….

– the tree seems to be Pongamia pinnata… right now these trees have new leaves and all old seedpods are dropping on the ground… in west bengal, india ….

pink & white flowers on Karanj [2 Attachments]:
While going through my cell photographs, I came across two types of flowers on
Karanj– Pogamia-

One snapped at Bhiwandi Wada road at my Native place Kavad, this was taken on 12 April 2009 shows pink flowers of Karanj.
second snap taken on road to Bandavgadh MP, this was taken on 4 June 2009,
This Karanj flowers show white flowers.
Is there any subspecies in variety of Karanj?
Is there any Botanist’s forum where I can put this question ?

The pictures are not too clear as also I am not an expert botanist.
But I think the first picture is Millettia peguensis and the other one Pongamia or Karanj.
Just a guess.

Thanks for the info about monotypic nature and the conserved name. I was under the impression that the name is changed to something Derris but the plant List surprisingly says Pongamia pinnata as acceped name

Leaf infections called “galls” are bumps or growths caused as a result of the feeding and other activity of insects or mites.

I also think it is the common M. pinnata.

I feel it as Pongamia pinnata

I also think this is Pongamia pinnata now known as Millettia pinnata

Yes. Milletia pinnata.

In Delhi it is neither a tall tree nor it is leafless. But here in Seekari the whole of the parking complex was full of them and mos of them were leafless. There trunk was also light. I can not send any picture because my phone is in a funny mood.

This is one of the most numerous avenue trees here in Mayur Vihar in New Delhi.
Leaves come in spring and almost all specimens that I have seen have the characteristic mottling as seen in the photographs.
Each specimen is quite a spectacle, with trunks that seems to grow without any plan.
I think I remember them flowering around August September. Very small white flowers, numerous and somewhat fragrant. The barks are silver, rough with small grains and the trunks have large bumps too. What I found intersting was one secondary branch which was actually growing with a negative gradient. Most of the specimens are twisted in odd shapes. I don’t know if that is a characteristic of the tree or the efforts of local arborists who trim the trees every winter or two.
Hoping for a positive ID on this tree that I see so many times everyday.

Looks like Pongamia pinnata.

Pongamia pinnata:
Seen this tree of Pongamia pinnata at Achara creek along with other mangrove trees.Flowers were looking too beautiful.
What surprised me was that the tree had spherical fruits (dried ones) hanging like grapes. Kindly have a look at enclosed photographs. Could this be due to some disease??

I also observed the same at Barvi, Badlapur – which is deciduous forest. Wonder, I couldn`t report or give significance importance to it.

Nice photographs … Very common in Delhi.

I really doubt if they have globular fruits coz this being pushed as a biodiesal tree a lot of work jas been done on genetic variability. May be its drying of flower buds. I seem to see scale encrustations on the twigs which could have caused the drying

…, those spherical structures are not fruits.
The following note from my book:
“Note: Two types of galls are commonly observed: one with elongated swellings on leaf-surface, said to be caused by Eriophyes cheriani Massee; and the other with globose, hard, 5-8 mm dia., spherical structures that are often mistaken for normal fruits, reported to be caused by Asphondylia pongamiae Felt. (Mani, 1965).”

please bear with me, and explain… how come an infection has proper branching pattern and looks like they are replacing some normal structure like a flower bud and bunches of them are hanging?? ..
I know these round things are not pongamia fruits they look like this see attached file…

I was merely responding to the description that it was globose fruits
“What surprised me was that the tree had spherical fruits (dried ones) hanging like grapes. Kindly have a look at enclosed photographs. Could this be due to some disease??” by …
If you refer to [efloraofindia:27751] Pongamia pinnata the conversion of reproductive parts into galls is a little more clearer though not as clear as for Id. here we can see half the flower cluster has set pods. In the present case unless I can feel it it could be dried flower buds too for which … may have a better idea. Leaf galls by the eriophid mite are very distinct and are more prevalent than the woody galls.

I understand that the shape/structure of galls is determined by factors such as the plant part in question, stimuli from the gall-making organism and the response from the host plant.
This one is a leaf gall formed probably by Aceria pongamiae mite:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PongamiaPinnataGall.jpg
The globose structures are probably of floral-galls as they are seen in panicles. I couldn’t find much detail on net for this. … may have a better explanation.
Here are some useful readings:

In Telugu it is called as Kanuga / Ganuga ( కానుగ / గానుగ ). When compared with other images of Pongamia posted in this forum I didn’t find similarities in flower.

Yes, it is Pongamia pinnata. First two pictures show the leaf-galls.

Yes it is Pongamia pinnata. What is seen in your first two pictures are leaf galls ..an infestation and not flowers as rightly told by …
The fruits seen in last photographs are characteristic as also the normal leaves.

In Chennai almost all the trees are affected by leaf-galls. Only during spring one can see pungam trees free from galls.

Tree for ID : Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai : 051112 : AK-3:
A tree seen with white flowers at Maharashtra Nature Park in Mumbai on 6/4/2012.
Is it Pongamia or Karanj ?
Never seen white flowers before, always with purple flowers so wanted to confirm.

Affirmative. This is Pongamia pinnata [Karanj / Pongam]. Please check my photographs of this at this link

Yes. this is Pongamia pinnata. Very nice shade providing tree, fixes nitrogen and supposed to protect against soil erosion due its lateral root system. I see lot of weird growth on their leaves. Can anyone share what these might be and what causes this? Does not seem to bother the trees though, as they seem to be healthy. This is one of the popular road-side planting trees in Bangalore.

the leaves are used in garlands and also used as green manure. The oil from the seeds are used in Sunscreen lotions. Useful as an Avenue tree as give good shade during summer.

Can you please ID this medicinal shrub. Unfortunately the leaves are eaten away. Photo was taken in a herbal garden in Sri Lanka in Dec 2012

This is a small tree, Pongamia pinnata…

…  do you know what’s affecting the leaves of pongamia for the last thirty years or so… be it virus or insects… here it seems insects ate them?

… , never enquired technically, but my observation is, this plant is susceptible to both insects as well as bacteria.. the bacterial galls are very common on this plant, both bacteria and insects attack the leaves.. the insects forming cream-coloured patches…

…: I thank you.
But I am sure plant pathology folks must have looked and reported these problems
I just dont know where to look for them?

and read carefully, you can see some wrong info about Pongamia pinnata.

New threat: some people trying to spread wrong information about Indian tree Pongamia pinnata (In marathi it is called “Karanja”) and its cultivation for biodiesel. Please read info about on website http://www.millettiaplantations.com/.I have doubt about their object s. If this wrong info might get read by our farmers or cultivators their might think to buy this species and which might be harmful to our ecosystem and economy too. As we know that our Pongamia pinnata is the best species to make biodiesel in the world having near about 60-70% oil content in seeds.

This is a commonly planted avenue tree, pics are from Panipat..
Pongamia pinnata ..

yes, beautiful tree overall. do these in north india get those round spots disfiguring the leaves? i have seen those spots on leaves in gangetic plains here in southern bengal and surprise…in jamnagar? so what are those spots?

Thanks … This tree is heavily “infected” in our area too, do not know exactly, but the white spots may be due to insects which inhabit the leaves, many times the leaves are disfigured into droplet like formations, which can be bacterial…
I am not informed on this topic and would like to know more !!
