Fabaceae (Faboidae) Fortnight: Uraria rufescens (DC.) Schindl. : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (8)

@ Yeoor (asl 125m) in October.
Pointers:
pedicel 5-6 mm, recurved after anthesis.
Apex of keel obtuse;
calyx lobes narrowly triangular, acuminate;
legume minutely hairy;
leaflets obtuse to acute or rarely rounded at apex.
The plant I saw had both 1 & 3-foliolate leaves.
Fruits 4-6 jointed.
Another noteworthy point is that the plant was very sticky when fruiting, especially the fruits.

Thanks … for this upload.
With these (the habit, leaves, inflorescence), I am convinced that the plant in my post is Uraria rufescens.

¿ Desmodium / Uraria ?
Erect herb, about 40 – 50 cm high, with trifoliate leaves (not sure of dimensions). Hopefully the photos help in getting ID to genus level. The dimensions of flowers are similar to that of Desmodium species (gangeticum / laxiflorum / triquetrum / etc).
at Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary on October 24, 2010

To me it should be Uraria sp.
9th image show some green pods which are folded, a characteristic feature of Uraria.
Nowadays enjoying your beautiful images of legumes !

… has given the correct lead.
This is Uraria rufescens in all probability.

Thank you very much … for leading me to the genus, thanks very much Samir for the seconding and for the most possible ID.

Wow… Didn’t thought of it being Uraria…… So much to still learn and explore

…, what I like about this post (other than those beautiful flowers so well captured by you) is the fact that you do not accept the identity as U. rufescens.
You have raised the bar for the group in accepting id. Gone are the days when one said ‘I think so’ and another saying ‘I also think so’ and so it became ‘so’ and identity was confirmed and sealed – date and location not required either!
It also means the group still does not have a U. rufescens in it’s impressive gallery (though there are a few posts with that subject line) showing ‘key’ features clearly.
Let me see what I can do to rectify this deficiency for the group.

I am far from “accepting / not accepting”. I can do so if I have any knowledge of this plant. I am not familiar with this plant so can only wait for it to be identified by any of those who know/ recognize it. Photographs howsoever clear, beautiful .. are of little use if they lack some of the aspects needed for identification. Under such circumstances, those attempting to identify are driven to think OR guess in interest of resolving the ID. With their thoughts and guesses, people like me are benefited. Otherwise most of our queries would go into cold storage. It is quite charming to see how wild guesses and logical thinking leads to concluding ID. Even if any post gets sealed with a wrong ID, it is bound to arise sometime or other to get corrected. That is the goodness of the group.
The group is fortunate to have you and many others who like to dig. It helps immensely to set right any mistakes that have crept into archive. Best wishes for doing your bit to help the group.
There would come some day when our group’s database will have descriptive keys accompanied by pictorial keys. That will make most of us who are merely photographing, understand and focus on the aspects required to differentiate species within a genus. As … says … so much to still learn and explore.

Thanks to … for sharing his sighting of Uraria rufescens in his recent post, I am convinced that the posted plant is Uraria rufescens.

DV – 24OCT10 – 0924 :: branching racemed Desmodium : 9 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (11)

ID please … would it turn out to be Desmodium dichotomum ?
Date/Time : October 24, 2010 at 9.24am IST
Location Place : Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary
Altitude : 281 m (above mean sea level)
GPS : 19°25’10.45″N, 72°54’37.61″E
Habitat : wild, mixed deciduous forest, along mountain road
Plant Habit : herb
Height : just about a metre
Inflorescence Type : terminal racemes (more than one)
Size : about 6 – 8 inches
Flowers Size : about 8 mm across
Colour : lavender (darkens on losing glory
)

It seems to me more an Alysicarpus species than Desmodium.
desmodium dichotomum has auricled stipules.

Thank you very much … did not think of Alysicarpus at all … we will wait for more comments

You should also check under the genus Uraria

… incidentally, my own thought too is Uraria rufuscens … was hesitant to voice because, normally species of Uraria have dense inflorescence.

Many thanks to … for the genus ID and most possible ID of Uraria rufescens – as discussed in newer post of mine.

Thanks to … for sharing his sighting of Uraria rufescens in his recent post, I am convinced that the posted plant is Uraria rufescens.

Location: Near Mudumalai TR, NIlgiris, TN
Date: November first week; 2017

Pl. check with images at Uraria rufescens

What about Desmodium concinnum..?

Any views from your end?

I am still confused …

Neither Desmodium concinnum does not have any distribution in your area notr matches with images herein.
I will go for Uraria rufescens as per images herein.

Desmodium concinnum DC. (accepted name)  ??

I think appears close as per images at Desmodium concinnum

I guessed it to be Desmodium concinnum but I am confused now.

It is Desmodiumb laxiflorum

I guess it does not look like matching.

I think closer to images at Desmodium multiflorum DC.

This is Desmodium laxiflorum. Common in eastern Himalaya

Thanks, … But images at Desmodium laxiflorum look different, particularly the leaves.

No, laxiflorum has wide no of habitat, depending upon the altitude the leaf size varies, but all within the range. It mainly delimited on the basis of inflorescence…

Looks more close to D. concinnum according to the altitude and flowering season. But altitude does not match with D. laxiflorum.

But your images do not match with images of D. concinuum.  Pl. Check.

I think close to images at Uraria rufescens (DC.) Schindl.

Thank you …! However, elevation given is 700-1000 m, only whereas it is 5000 ft. in this case.

well. 1000 meters is 3281 feet and with climate change, things are moving moving up the mountains as the ice melts away. the tree lines have moved.

May be.

So we take it as Uraria rufescens (DC.) Schindl.? But the plant is hardly 15/20 cm.
