Attachments (12) This vetch has been growing in abundance on the margins of cultivated fields here at 1800m and are easy to spot because of their pink/purple flowers. The tendrils at the end of compound leaves (which are responsible for the name Vicia, Latin verb ‘vincere’ means to twist), wrap around grass blades to help support the plant. The pods are also out and I made some photographs and collected observations to share with you. Please correct me if I am wrong in identifying this. Height of the plant: 20-65cm Flowers: Pink/purple with pale centres, 1cm across and about 2cm tall. Stalk 2-3mm. Calyx: Fused with five hairy, sharply pointed narrow lobes reaching more than halfway up the corolla tube. Lobes smaller than the calyx tube. Leaves: Compound, mostly with 5-6 pairs of leaflets, ending in a tri-forked tendril. Leaflets arranged opposite or alternately, hairy with visible veins, ending abruptly in a sharp point (mucronate). Stipules present, shoe-shaped with a dark spot on the ankle. Fruit: ca. 7mm wide and 35mm long, ending in a point. Calyx persistent. Vicia sativa (sub. sativa?) Agreed … I had that thought in my mind about the leaves which appear to be pinnate in your plant as against simple in my plant. I didn’t have any scale today. So, I am not sure what subspecies it, not in cultivation, could be.

SK118SEP29-2016:ID : 3 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (2) Sharing some pictures for ID shot at Nubra Valley on 21 August 2016. Likely to be Vicia sp. I agree that this seems to be a Vicia. Two species are recorded for Ladakh: V.sativa and V.tenuifolia. Both are described as field weeds, only recorded to modest altitudes in Ladakh. V.sativa found from the plains right up to Ladakh. The images do not fit W.tenuifolia. That leaves Vicia sativa, known as ‘Common Vetch’ in the UK. World-wide this is a variable species, with subspecies recognised (do not know which one is understood to be found to grow in Ladakh). Seems to match satisfactorily to me but welcome other suggestions. When photographing Vicia and related genera, close up images of the stipules are most useful – these are found at the base of the leaf-stalks; in V.sativa (at lest the variants in the UK, are half-arrow-shaped, toothed or entire, often with a dark blotch. The stipules cannot been seen in these images from Nubra.

These are tendrils, modification of upper part of leaf rachis. Not specific to this species, other in the genus also have similar tendrils.

However, as we have Vicia sativa subsp. nigra, it is better to mention Vicia sativa subsp. sativa instead of simply writing Vicia sativa (though it is also OK).
