Erect herbs, to 15 cm high; stem reddish, 4-angled. Leaves to 8 x 6 mm, oblong-orbicular, sessile, glabrous, 5-nerved. Racemes 1-1.5 cm long, bracteoles 2 mm long, lanceolate; calyx tube 2.5 mm long, lobes triangular, acute; intersepalar appendages absent; petals 1.5 x 1 mm, obovate; filaments attached near the base of calyx tube; ovary 1 x 1 mm, obovoid, truncate, obtuse, 4-angled; style 1 mm long.

Flowering and fruiting: September-March
Along streams and marshy areas in grasslands
South and South East Asia and also in Japan
.

The emerse form has rounded leaves, the submerse leaves are narrow lanceolate. It is very variable dependent on light and environmental conditions. Under strong light the leaves can become almost wine red. Pale pink flowers.

This plant can be differentiated from the closely related R. indica by the differences in the two species’ inflorescences. R. rotundifolia bears groups of terminal inflorescence while R. indica has solitary flowers on the axis of the leaves.
A common weed in rice paddies and wet places
A common aquarium plant. Undemanding but likes a lot of light to thrive. Can withstand relatively cool temperatures. Losing its lower leaves usually means it is not receiving enough light. Can be grown emerse in shallow water where it will flower. Forms a good clump under reasonable conditions.
Propagated by cuttings which form as side shoots.
India, China, Formosa, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam – introduced to the United States

Rotala rosea

I’m guessing R. rotundifolia because of the shape of leaves and flowers in terminal spikes. I don’t know the plant from the field.

The attached figure from Assam is of Rotala rotundifolia (Buch.-Ha.. ex Roxb.) Koehne
Basionym: Ammannia rotundifolia Buch.-Ham. ex Roxb.

It seems like R. rotundifolia or allied taxa. For correct identity complete botanical description is needed.
