Chorisis speciosa (=Ceiba speciosa) for sure. It is Corisia speciosa. Pl refer the attached file and id the Flower. This was taken at Kumbhoj, Jahaj Udyan garden Kolhapur. The photo was clicked by … in the first week of Sept. 2014
May we please see the whole tree and some of its early leaves as they begin to emerge at the tail end of the flowering episode???
This is Chorisia speciosa… or Cheiba speciosa… silk floss tree.
The trunk should have typical thorns and branching pattern is unique. I would appreciate the4 whole tree picture.
ps…. its always nice to photograph the whole tree, its habitat and trunk etc when one does not know its identity… This is Chorisia speciosa.
Chorisia speciosa

Delhi Sawar
To me it appears like Ceiba speciosa (syn. Chorisia speciosa)
Ceiba ventricosa (syn: Chorisia ventricosa) seems to be different.
I agree with … I had found several trees of Ceiba speciosa flowering in Delhi last November. I collected a flower in Noida (see picture) too for a proper ID and had to photograph it in the fading light before it withered. Please see Trees of Delhi by Pradip Krishen, p. 210.

A beautiful tree, especially when flowering..thanks Sir .. Ceiba speciosa (A.St.-Hil.) Ravenna Syn: Chorisia speciosa A.St.-Hil.; Chorisia rosea Seem
This beautiful tree, great to look at when flowering in autumn, both in Delhi and in California, often planted on roadsides and Parks. My California plamt seems to more attractive flowers and broader petals.
Yes Sir looking somewhat different Subfamily: Bombacoideae
Genus: Ceiba Species: Ceiba speciosa (A.St.-Hil.) Ravenna Synonym: Chorisia speciosa A.St.-Hil. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustin_Saint-Hilaire> Colloqiual names: silk floss tree A street tree in Arizona, New mexico, Southern California, planted for Xeriscape … Native of South American continent, is grown in tropic for the Xeriscape, beautiful flowers, curiosity and because of prolific seed production, may establish itself in hospitable terrain (this last is my opinion, nobody seems to have written about it yet! ) …. It is also called as Delhi Sawar probably because many trees have been planted in Delhi long time back. thorns are for storing water. I have noticed some of the sheemul trees which usually are supposed to have thorns… do not have them … may e be they are watered regularly and do not need these storage tanks… Life science are soooo interesting..
Thorns are generally seen on juvenile trees and not on fully grown trees. Proves .. point. Malvaceae week : Ceiba speciosa, drunken tree the trunk from Buenos Aires: Ceiba speciosa is also called drunken tree, you will know why, when you see the foto. The Foto is not good, klicken while travelling on the bus. Can’t say, which Ceiba speciosa of the two it belongs to. Foto taken on 29.3.2010 in Buenos Aires.
good quick reflex … did you keep camera on always? its called drunken not because of the bottle shape of the lower trunk… its drunken like because its branches twist and turn looking ‘awkward’ twisting and haphazard shapes of the branches is supposed to be due to spurts of sudden growth during availability of water and drooping etc during long periods of drought, then growth with rains, etc …on and on…
Secondly in some soil it sort of leans, like a drunken guy toppling over…
Malvaceae week : Ceiba speciosa 1 from buenos aires: this one is supposed to be Ceiba speciosa? Posting another foto with obling fruits. Fotos taken on 27.3.2010 in Buenos Aires.
… thanks … for showing Ceiba speciosa from its native place. Its very nice to see the round fruit… did you get any fallen ones…ie get to open one up? Is Chorisia speciosa a synonym since some horticultural books mention it accordingly? no there were no fallen fruits, I did not want to pluck one. These fotos were taken between 27. and 30. March 2010 in Buenos Aires
The fruits in the following fotos Ceiba speciosa-BA-P1030237.JPG Ceiba speciosa-100_6433.JPG look different from these.
Ceiba speciosa-100_6217.JPG Ceiba speciosa-100_6218.JPG Ceiba speciosa-100_6219.JPG They are not edible. These trees are also called drunken trees because the trunk is big and looks many times like beer belly. I hope the Id is correct. – indeed Ceiba speciosa – In California it flowers in Sep-Oct., Oct-Nov in Delhi
– yes, it flowers in autumn. – Picture in number Ceiba speciosa-100_6219.JPG seems not to belong to this series…….
fruits seem cicular round ball like, noit cylincrical, and leaves margins are not smooth… … is the first photo (Ceiba speciosa-BA-P1030237.JPG) crunched on its length’s side … OR it could merely be my perception.
Does not seem to be Ceiba speciosa. Please wait for comment(s). Yes … little bit stretched lengthwise This appears close to Chorisia speciosa from shape of the fruit. This is how, my camera took it. Yes both pics Chorisia speciosa, also in fruiting stage in our area ceiba speciosa seeds : 16 posts by 4 authors.

The fruiting season is long over but I will try in some nurseries and let you know. Please find out the seeds of C. speciosa from Sunder Nursery. I was thinking of doing it; shall go tomorrow and find out. what is the fruiting season ? Pl. check at Tree flowers and fruits in October-December; could not find any fruits on the trees. Checked in 3 nurseries including Sunder nursery today; they can provide small plants but not seeds. They did not want to share/ did not have any specific information about where they get the plants from. Only information I got is that generally the seeds of timber trees are obtained from Dehradun, probably from Forest Research Institute.
Shall try in other nurseries too, and let you know.
