Syzygium caryophyllatum (L.) Alston syn. Eugenia corymbosa
This looks like the same tree you posted last week.

Thanks … for solving so many of my IDs.
This was taken at a separate loacation though.

This Syzygium is quite common on the Western Ghats in the edges of evergreen forests, often along streams and also recorded in deciduous forests of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa.

Plant for ID: Devbagh SMP 11/05/2012:
A shrub height around 4-5 feet only. Amongst other coastal plants and mangroves.
Leaves and flowers very similar to Syzigium species (Jamun). Shot at Devbagh beach area near mangroves. Karwar

Does your plant has any potential of being Laguncularia racemosa? This medium sized mangrove tree is widely distributed in the tropics. The plant is characterized by thick, scaly (often reddish) bark and extra-floral nectaries present at the base of the leaf. Looking at the 2nd photo it seems there are nectaries present (or may be I am fascinating).

This seems to be Syzigium heyneanum.

I think … ID seems to be closer. Let us wait for any other opinions/comments

Based on my pictures, I think it is Syzygium latifolium (Poir.) DC.

Does not match with images of Syzygium salicifolium (syn: Syzygium heyneanum (Duthie) Gamble)
Also I found no distribution of Syzygium latifolium (Poir.) DC. in India

Syzygium corymbosum (Blume) DC.

Thanks, …, But Catalogue of Life and Syzygium page does not show its distribution in India.

seems to me Syzygium caryophyllatum

Yes. S caryophyllatum is the right name. I got carried with Eugenia corymbosa which is a syn of this.

Saw this Syzygium species on the road near Anashi WLS, Karnataka. Was tentatively IDED as S. rubicundum now S. carophyllatum (Linn.). Request confirmation of validity or otherwise of the same. Thank you.

This plant is certainly Syzygium caryophyllatum … is correct

Name: Dwarf black plum tree  / Indian blackberry
Local name: Kunta Nerale meaning dwarf plum
Hindi: Chota Jambul Ped` ?
Height: Less than a meter
Place: Kavalu katta, Unchalli Falls, Uttara Kannada
Habitat: Western ghats
Monsoon, Jun 2009

Does anybody tell its Bot. name?

Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels. (Myrtaceae)

Syzygium cumunii usually has  big fruits abt 2-3 cm long. there are many species in Syzygium. i think we need to do more reference for
Syzygium.

I do agree with you …,
Since the plant specimen originated from Western Ghats, I please to ask friends to consult the following link for Syzygium.
http://biotik.org/species_list_india.html
In this, there are 16 species of Syzygium with lots of good photos and description.
And my personal experience with this particular species is that there are lots & lots of varieties and ecotypes exist within the species Syzygium cumini.
They vary with the leaf size, fruit size, etc.
Based on my own research, there are three different seed size class exist within this particular species.
And about the fruit size I have seen with very small fruits if the plant is grown under arid/semi-arid condition.
Waiting for more comments,

I suspect the plant- Syzigium caryophyllatum, which is known as Kuntu nerale in Kannada…
Its a small tree , a bushy shub indeed, Fruits are edible, but not that much sweet as S.cumini.. Fruit is  much watery…
Nice snaps …:)
