Rhizomatous auatic herbs. rhizomes often producing long runners. Leaves alternate, elliptic or orbicular, elliptic-sagitate when young, entire or irregularly sinuate at margin, rounded-acute at apex, (6-) 10-35(-45) x (5-) 8-28(-40) cm, reddish purple beneath; main nerves 7-15, palmate; midnerve grooved above, prominently angled beneath; secondary nerves 4-7 pairs, slightly grooved above; petioles terete, 2-5 mm thick, glabrous. Flowers 6-14 cm across, slightly fragrant. Sepals lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, obtuse, 2.5-7.5 x 0.7-2.5 cm, green, streaked purple outside. Petals 8-15, elliptic-lanceolate, 2.5-6 x 0.5-1.2 cm, mauve. Stamens 20-60, yellow; outer ones 1.5-2.5 cm long; the inner shorter; connective appendages 1.5-3 mm long; anthers 0.5-1.5 cm long. Ovary urceolate, sunken, 10-20 loculed; ovules numerous on superficial placentae; stigmas 8-20, radiating, connate at base. Nymphaea nouchali (also called Star lotus, Red and blue water lily, Blue star water lily, or by its synonym Nymphaea stellata) is a water lily of genus Nymphaea. It is the national flower of Sri Lanka and of Bangladesh.
This aquatic plant is native from the Indian Subcontinent to Australia region. It has been long valued as a garden flower in Thailand and Myanmar to decorate ponds and gardens.
In its natural state N. nouchali is found in static or slow-flowing aquatic habitats of little to moderate depth.[citation needed]
Nymphaea nouchali is a day blooming nonviviparous plant with submerged roots and stems. Part of the leaves are submerged, while others rise slightly above the surface. The leaves are round and green on top; they usually have a darker underside. The floating leaves have undulating edges that give them a crenellate appearance. Their size is about 20–23 cm and their spread is 0.9 to 1.8 m.
This water lily has a beautiful flower which is usually violet blue in color with reddish edges. Some varieties have white, purple, mauve or fuchsia-colored flowers. The flower has 4-5 sepals and 13-15 petals that have an angular appearance making the flower look star-shaped from above. The cup-like calyx has a diameter of 11–14 cm.
N. nouchali is used as an ornamental plant because of its spectacular flowers. It is also popular as an aquarium plant under the name “Dwarf Lily” or “Dwarf Red Lily”.[citation needed] Sometimes it is grown for its flowers, while other aquarists prefer to trim the lily pads, and just have the underwater foliage.
Nymphaea nouchali is considered a medicinal plant in Indian Ayurvedic medicine under the name Ambal; it was mainly used to treat indigestion.[4] Recent experiments have confirmed that it has medicinal qualities as an antihepatotoxic and antidiabetic.[5][6] Like all waterlilies or lotuses, its tubers and rhizomes can be used as food items; they are eaten usually boiled or roasted. In the case of N. nouchali, its tender leaves and flower peduncles are also valued as food.[7]
The dried plant is collected from ponds, tanks and marshes during the dry season and used in India as animal forage.[8]

1. one with darker green leaves and spinous-dentate margin (both are seen in images 92, 95 and 99). It should be N. pubecens.
2. One with light green leaves, smooth or repand-dentate blunt margins that could be N. nauchauli Burm.f. (syn N. stellata Willd.) Yes Sir, you can not be wrong. There are two species, and i missed it. The one with darker green & spinous dentate leaves are of N. pubescens Willd. (FoP). And those two buds (in P1060399.jpg) might be of the N. pubescens that i think closes in bright daylight. Thank you very much Sir for correcting me.

If I am not wrong then there are two species in the pond

i have decided to call JU and CU or St Xavier’s department of classics if they have such a thing anymore… and see if I can go and meet with some one.. next week . A precise reference would have been ideal but the author lures us with the mere name of this enigmatic nymph – Nouchal – and no whereabouts;-( Other botanical names, several of them rooted in Greek mythology, have been similarly explained in this book.
The species might well have been named after the Noakhali district in Bangladesh.
I don’t know for sure.

Tiny flowered water lilies in a nursery seen on 17/1/15. Cultivated, ornamental plant. Nymphaea – species in eFIoraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available) Since anther connectives are clearly visible even in this small flower, it should be a cultivar of Nymphaea nouchali N. L. Burman, where flowers can be about 3 cm in diameter. If it is smaller than that there is one Nymphaea ‘Pygmaea Helvola’, but which should not have visible anther connectives. Thanks for the possible ids and details. I will check the size of flowers on my next visit and confirm.

Water Lilies for ID : 270111 : AK-3: I hope Nymphaea nauchalii Nymphaea pubescens, N. nouchalii is pinkish red. I think the leaves never entire in N. pubescence. it looks like a Nymphaea micrantha ? Could be considered! The species supposed to have leaves with dark spots below, white filaments and more important often showing vivipary. I too think it is Nymphaea micrantha. I think it is Nymphaea nouchali. Micrantha probably has more dense petals (more double). I also think it is N. nauchalii
A comparison between N.nauchali and N. micrantha that is available online. N.micrantha Here’s my image of the same species (I think) which I felt was N. micrantha. Confirmation/ Correction will be appreciated.
I doubt whether this is similar to the one that posted earlier in this thread. To me appears close to images of Nymphaea caerulea Savigny at

કુમુદ refers to the night-blooming white water-lily. The blue-flowered, day-blooming Nymphaea nouchali is known as નીલ કમલ (કમળ) in Gujarati. Also simply known as કમળ in Gujarati. In વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર (1966), the pioneering botanist Jayakrishna Indraji has documented a curious name of this plant, કાળાં કમલ, apparently alluding to its black tuberous rhizomes. JI refers to the night-blooming lotus & water-lily plants as ચંદ્રવિકાશી કમળ and to the day-blooming as સૂર્યવિકાશી કમળ. A clarification on the year of publication of વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર, it was published in AD 1910. In my previous email, I inadvertently typed the Vikram Samvat year mentioned in the book. could you please send me full citation of this book? I am referring to the original first edition (1000 copies were printed in 1910) which was generously gifted to me by a family friend in Kachchh. It is a very well-known book in Gujarati circles. Has been reprinted by Pravin Prakashan, Rajkot. I don’t have their contact details at hand. so the indian adjectives were made prior to throwing off of the yoke… wonderful I have been trying to know what actually nouchali mean, but can’t find any reference. Even N.L.Burman didn’t mention this name anywhere in his book (as far as I can find). This word must be name of a guy and most likely from your area or a bit lower in Coromandel. Some old names are hard to find but you can look out for variants of the name in the telephone directory 🙂 And very nice pic for sure. Pink colours are hard to capture, in fact I have never seen Nymphaea of this color !! In hindi it is Kumudni. Yes Kamal for Lotus and Kumud for Lily. As stamen are more than 50, compared to 10 to 30 in Nymphaea nouchali, image should be of Nymphaea micrantha Perr. & Guill. as per images and references herein.
