Nymphaea – species in eFIoraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available) I think this is either N. pubescence or N. lotus var. pubescence. Nymphaea nouchali Burm.f.(= N. stellata Willd) Toothed leaf margins N. pubescens It can be Nymphaea × omarana Bisset as per images and references herein. But can not be confirmed as stamens are not visible.

Here in south we will consider the water lily with teethed leaf as Nymphaea nouchali Burm.f. To me it is Nymphaea pubescens. It should be Nymphaea × omarana Bisset as per images and references herein.

Most likely to be due to Leaves being with spinous – dentate margins as per Keys available at Flora of China, Flora of Pakistan and BSI Flora of India It can be Nymphaea × omarana Bisset as per images and references herein. I attach more photographs, KEY in BP & BoBO and entry of N. lotus in FI, because, though I titled the thread as I found post of same species (?) in efi, I think the accepted name of N. rubra should be sorted out to help identify other red coloured ones. More so because … has identified a red coloured in the thread as N. pubescence. More similar looking species ids pending. With limited knowledge, experience, resources I am confused with what I found in FoC FoP FoNA GRIN TPL.
Combining all the above efloras with Prain and Haines I think we should follow FoC –

We definitely need a well thought out disscussion and may be a key I somehow think …. had made a key a few years ago… but cant be sure so a discussion now would be appropriate… tonnes of hybrids in france, england and usa for the last 100+ years and privacy/secrecy by the authors of such hybridization does not help in simplification.. still…. this request Some related literatures –
As per the document in the first link above this should be N. rubra Roxb, ex Salisb., the accepted name of which might be N. rubra Roxb. ex Andrews Agreed both The Plant List and GRIN consider N. rubra as distinct species, but having seen and reported huge number of errors in The Plant List and Limited coverage by GRIN, I prefer to follow eFl of China being latest of all Floras, and MULTILINGUAL MULTISCRIPT PLANT NAME DATABASE Sorting Plant Names, both of which treat N. rubra as synonym of N. pubescens. I have seen plants with both red and white flowers growing in the same pond in Delhi and I could not detect any differences other than flower colour. Besides my observation were very similar to eFl of China “Nvmphaea rubra Roth. is sometimes treated as an independent species. Canard, The Water Lilies: Monog. Genus Nymphaea 199.1905 distinguished Nymphaea rubra Roxb. from Nymphaea pubescens Willd. on the basis of colour of flowers and size of the leaves. In the former species, the flowers are pink with larger leaves and in the later species the flowers are white with smaller leaves. However, we have seen the plants with white flowers and larger leaves or vice versa. I have used the name as found in FoC. This may be cultivated, found today beside a busy dusty road near Uttarpara. This needs some further investigation. N. pubescens is characterised by sharply dentate leaves (which it has) and pubescent leaf under surface (it is glabrous here). Can you check with original description of N. rubra for leaf under surface. Thank you Sir, i have also noted the point (leaf under surface), that is why i followed the FoC where the site informs, “cultivated forms of var. pubescence with red flowers, originating from India….”, thinking that cultivated forms may have variable character (s).
However, Flora Indica records –
1) N. rubra R. : Leaves sub-orbicular, margins sharply sinuate-toothed, downy underneath. Flowers red…… A native of India. It flowers during the rainy season, In Bengal there is a smaller rose coloured variety (differs in numbers of stamens & stigma rays).
2) N. lotus Willd.. 2. 1153 : Leaves orbicularly peltate, sharply sinuate toothed, downy underneath….. It differs from N. rubra in the colour of the flowers only. There is a beautiful rare variety with pink coloured flowers….. the white sorts is found common in pools,… it flowers more or less the whole year……
3) N. versicolor R. : Leaves oval, peltate, repand-dentate…. A native of Bengal, …two varieties, …one pure white and the other pink of various shades.
Compared to above entry by Haines :-
N. lotus L. : Leaves usually pubescent beneath…. (two var.) lotus proper and rubra.
Compared to above the author(s) of Archive informs (in Thailand) leaves of N. rubra Roxb. ex Salisb. orbicular, dark reddish both above and below, becoming greenish above with age, below pubescent; veins about 9 pairs….

Nymphaea rubra Roxb. ex Andrews Thank you …, thanks to … I have developed a doubt if we have any N. rubra in our database at all, in fact none of the posts shows red flowers, all are shades of pink, only the one by Balkar Sir may be called close to red (anthers only).       This set of photographs are from a place near Burdwan, recorded today. This may be the same species as the originals in this thread. The only difference is leaves are both red or green or reddish green. This is semi-wild, semi in the sense that one villager says, “Years ago we had planted one plant collected elsewhere, thereafter it covered the entire pool.”

Can you please help me ID this plant? Date/Time- 20th May 2021 Location- Reni Pani Village, Near Satpura National Park, Madhya Pradesh Habitat- Cultivated Plant Habit- Aquatic floating leaved plant. We had found this plant in the wild first and then planted it in our pond. The flowers are dark pink and usually open till noon. The leaves appear to be slightly crinkled and have a reddish tone to them. Check for Nelumbo nucifera. It is not possible to visualise the floral parts ! Post a clear picture of the flowers for proper ID. No way …, damn sure it’s Nymphaea only, not Nelumbo, need to conform with stamens either rubra or pubescens, I agree this is definitely not Nelumbo nucifera. This does seem more like Nymphaea Rubra to me, as I read the description for it on Flowers of India and it does flower all year round, unlike Pubescens. Will try and get a better picture for this and share it. Pl. post high res. image to see the details. Here is an image with the stamen visible, let me know if this helps!
