Ochna obtusata from Delhi.
The species is often confused and considered synonymous with O. jabotapita. The two are however considered distinct by GRIN and Revised Handbook of Flora of Ceylone Vol. 6, 1987. The two are separated as under:
Ochna jatbotapita L. (syn: O. squarrosa L. (non Bennet in FBI); O. rufescens Thw.)…..Petals 5-10 x 2-5 mm, about as long as sepals, anthers 3-6 mm long; stamens 12-25; drupelets 1-2 per flower—–Endemic to Ceylone wet zone
Ochna obtusata DC. (syn: O. squarrosa Bennet in FBI (non L.)……Petals 15-25 x 7-15 mm, longer than sepals; anthers 6-12 mm long; stamens 30-50- drupelets more than 3 per flower dry zone, Ceylone, Peninsular and North India, mostly cultivated.

I got them planted in Sir Gangaram Hospital in 1989. Now they have disappeared from there because the hospital got expanded. Afterwards I did not find it in any nursery of Delhi.

Ochna sp.? O.serrulata?

efi page on Ochna serrulata Ochna– species in India & eFI with some keys

I think this is Ochna pumila Ham. What will be accepted name? One may check –

  1. http://plants.jstor.org/specimen/
  2. illustrations of O. serrulata Walp. – http://plantgenera.org/species.php?id_species=706289

Thanks n regards

Ochna serrulata for sure!!!

Looks more like Ochna integerrima. O. integerrima differs by having wider leaves with bristle-bearing margins rather than sharp teeth of narrow-leaved O. serrulata. Therefore, again please check the margins of the leaves for confirmation as margins are  not  clearly seen in the photographs

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ochna_leaf_margin.jpg

Kindly find attached images of ochna leaf margins for your perusal.

1) Shrub; Flowers umbellate on a common peduncle (peduncle though shorter than FBI description) ; Anthers longer than filaments; distributed in Himalaya as well as south Concan = pumila Ham.
2) Small tree or shrub (FoC); Inflorescence corymbose (FoC) or in loose axillary panicles (O. wallichii Planch. in FBI); Anthers shorter than persistent filaments; distributed in SE Asia (FoC), India North-East & Andaman-Nicobar = wallichii Planch.

btw, one would like to see description of serrulata

Seems to be Ochna obtusata DC. (Ochna squarrosa auct., non L.)

Family Ochnaceae.
Very common, Now in flower/fruit.
The red (and green) accrescent calyx and black fruits are similar to Ochna serrulata (ornamental).
In Goa, the plant is very common in the wild; not grown as ornamental.

Update : Mr. Shrikant Ingalhalikar in his book ‘Flowers of Sahyadri’, has identified the plant as Ochna obtusata dc

Thank you … I guess I need to wait and watch if the sepals turn red, right? Is this an ornamental plant that people plant in India?

Found in Vandalur forest, Chennai.
Very strange fruit with seeds attached outside.
I ever thought this kind of fruit will be in a dry forest.

Is this Ochna sp.?

I have also seen this in suburbs of Chennai.

Ramdhan Champa (Ochna obtusata)
Common in Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest.

Interestingly picture taken by me is bit more complex and detailed than available images in net.

Seems to be Ochna kirkii

That’s  why I mentioned it was bit complex than obtusta.

As per details at Ochna, Ochna kirkii is not mentioned to be found in Tamilnadu.
Also we do not have any confirmed observation of this species in efi so far, while there are lot of observations of Ochna obtusata as per images & details herein.
To me also it appears close to images at Ochna obtusata

Ramdhan champa
Ochna obtusa

Ochna obtusata var. obtusata (कनक चंपा) Family: Ochnaceae
I saw this plant flowering in Pune University last week (31.3.10).
On searching the mails I found that only … has posted picture of flower. Rest of the posts contained pictures of fruits.

Ochna ??: 2 images.

Is this Ochna serrulata ? please confirm
The plant was clicked at Chandigarh today i.e. on 2nd July, 2011, at around 12:00
the leaves are with serrate margins….
flowers fragrant….

yes Ochna serrulata

Yes. Those who are in Chennaai can see this in Theosophical society campus .

Ochna obtusata & Ochna wightiana are the only two Ochna species listed in FOI database. Ochna serrulata is not listed here. The flower in question matches O. obtusata of FOI (accd. to me).
Ochna obtusata DC & Ochna serrulata (Hochst.) Walp. are both valid names in ars-grin database. GRIN says Ochna serrulata is (native) distributed in Africa and lists geographic distribution of Ochna obtusata as Indian sub-continent.
Your inputs please.

Ochna serrulata… I appreciate the close-up of the flower

I think Ochna obtusata as per images and details herein.

It rather appears more closer to images at Ochna gamblei King ex Brandis
But somebody must have planted it from down south or from where ever it is having the range etc.

May even be Ochna obtusata as images are very small and I am unable to see all the details.

Ochna squarrosa???
Ochna obtusata???

If you have downloaded the ‘Bengal Plants’, you have the KEY …

efi page on Ochna obtusata

I am sorry to say that I gave wrong info regarding Ochna list in Bengal Plants. Both, the ‘Bengal Plants’ and the ‘Botany of Bihar & Orissa’ do not provide KEY to O. squarrosa and O. obtusata. Instead both the books provide difference to O. squarrosa L. and O. pumila Ham.

Interestingly FBI treats O. squarrosa L. is synonymous with O. obtusata DC. and O. lucida Lamk.
While in TPL all the above are unresolved. FoC doesn’t help.
A paper can be read/viewed at http://www.jstor.org/stable/1217211, which says O. squarrosa L. and O. obtusata DC. are two different taxa.
Our group says O. jabotapita L. (O. squarrosa L.) is a cultivated shrub. On the other hand Ochna obtusata DC. (O.squarrrosa auct. Non. L.) is a shrub or small tree. This much I could find.

I think Ochna obtusata as per images and details herein.
