… most probably Pedicularis bicornuta Klotzsch (family Orobanchaceae).

Yes …

Pedicularis is a member of Scroph?

I referred to The Plants List where I found the genus Pedicularis to be in the family Orobanchaceae.

The flower appendages in this species exhibit rolling up of corolla to the extent that the flowers become ball like in appearance an adaptation most suited to minimize mechanical damage by the high velocity winds present in the area of its occurrence like Spiti valley

I found this plant at Triund right at the end of my trek. If my identification is correct, this is my second Pedicularis species. I was standing at an angle to photograph this plant (I saw only two plants) and could not do justice to details.

I have photographed this plant before too but haven’t come to a conclusion on its identity. I am confused between P. hoffmeisterii and P. cornuta. Please help ascertain it.

I collected more evidence for this too and now believe that our plants are P. bicornuta. Please advise. Attachments (5)

What is the difference between the two ?

Pl. tell me the difference between the two (Pedicularis bicornuta & Pedicularis hoffmeisteri) as I have to sort out the postings of these two species in efi site.

The main difference I took to be in P. birconuta is that it has a s-shaped upper lip (which is not visible under the hood), rounded lateral lobes and an oblong mid-lobe, the beak is bifid, corolla tube 2-3 cm (what is visible outside the calyx), hairy.
But I am finding out that the corolla tube length is the full length including what is inside the calyx. By that standard, my sample (4cm) should belong to P. hoffmeisteri. I also took the upper lip to be the extension of the corolla tube which is spiral shaped in my sample and should belong to P. bicornuta. The beak too is bifid which again points to P. bicornuta. The calyx is hairy and puffed in appearance, which could belong to either species. P. bicornuta should have a calyx with small irregular lobes while that of P. hoffmeisteri with leafy toothed lobes. The lobes on my sample point to P. hoffmeisteri. In P. hoffmeisteri the corolla tube should be many times longer than the calyx, I am not sure if my sample has that.
P. bicornuta should have the upper lip with a coiled bifid beak, which is true in my sample.
I am still studying this and will need more time before I can be certain.
My apologies!
