http://commons.wikimedia.Portulaca_grandiflora_flower.jpg (a picture), http://botany.cs.tamu.edu/portulaca342.jpg (a picture).
This should be Portulaca pilosa as per images and details herein. . Portulaca pilosa and Portulaca pilosa var. tuberosa : 5 posts by 2 authors.
While revising efi site efloraofindia Protulaca pages, I found that Catalogue of Life gives only distribution of Portulaca pilosa var. tuberosa (Roxb.) V.V.Sivarajan in India. It is also supported by POWO (based on latest bibliographic references).
There is no distribution of Portulaca pilosa subsp. pilosa in India as per Catalogue of life and POWO. In view, we should take all over postings at Portulaca pilosa to be Portulaca pilosa var. tuberosa
Thanks for bringing this up. Portulaca pilosa is a cultivated plant, and seems to have naturalized everywhere. This is an almost unmistakable plant with pink-purple flowers. Portulaca tuberosa Roxb. is a very different plant with yellow flowers, which is native to India. Thanks, … I do not know why Catalogue of life and POWO are missing its distribution in India, while they are giving extensive distribution of both native and introduced regions., for all the species found in India.
Problem is compounded as different sources are mentioning different type of leaves, flower colour and habit of these plants at Flora of Pakistan, Flora of China, An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India and Flora of peninsular India
Sorry, I missed the distribution in India mentioned in Catalogue of life for Portulaca pilosa subsp. pilosa
So our plant ids at Portulaca pilosa should be correct. Flora of Pakistan mentions Petals 5, slightly united at the base, obovate, 5-6 mm long, c. 4 mm broad, obtuse, pink for Portulaca pilosa L., while Petals 5, united at the base, lanceolate, 6-7 mm long, c. 2 mm broad, acute, yellow for Portulaca tuberosa Roxb., An Excursion Flora of Central Tamilnadu, India states yellow or cream for Portulaca pilosa var. tuberosa
So this should further strengthen our ids. .
