I think this must be correct but please, next time, take MANY more photos of each plant you come across including undersides of flowers, upper foliage & lower foliage (both upper and lower surfaces), habit & habitat. This is an under-developed plant which makes it much more difficult to be confident as to which species, unless one is quite familiar with the species belonging to a genus in that region. Clearly, there is uncertainty as to the limits of the variation of Anemone rivularis, A.obtusiloba and A.rupicola amongst members with 2 of the postings having been misidentified.

These small flowers had a mild sweet scent. The underneath was indigo purple and leaves like that of a buttercup–the family to which it belongs.

24 June 2015 Beautiful pics … It is a common element in heavily grazed areas in Uttarakhand at this altitude. An early summer bloomer. Trekking through knee-high sea of its floral profusion is a delightful experience in high altitudes of the Himalaya. Excellent images. Correctly identified.
The only images I have of this Anemone taken with slides in the 1980s merely show the habit & habitat of the plant but these are worthwhile to add to the reference material available on eFI.
Yes, there are already quite a number of postings of images of A.rivularis posted and the majority were correctly identified (although 3 sets of images were not).
But it helps to distinguish between species when one understands there general dimensions and where they are typically found.
I have seen both Anemone rivularis and A.obtusiloba in the Kulu Valley, H.P. but not growing together.
1. – at Manali; in the mid-1980s this was common at streamsides at the edge of Deodar forest near a temple but has been largely trampled out of existence due to large increase in tourist number (Indian not foreign)
2. – in an irrigated meadow in the lower part of Miyah Nullah, Lahaul, H.P. Probably found in similar habitat in Ladakh.
This species has not been recorded for Kashmir.
Its seeds are utilised in Tibetan Medicine.

Anemone …????
Likely to be Anemone rivularis…!! This does seem to fit Anemone rivularis but one should look out for A.elongata @ 2600-3500m in Nepal. There are no images of pressed specimens of the latter available on the Kew Herbarium site and some of the images attributed to this species on the internet have been misidentified such as the first image which appears when checking with ‘The Plant List’ see: Link. This is CLEARLY not A.elongata – seems to be a hybrid cultivar to me!
Anemon elongata is recorded from Garwhal, so perhaps … has come across it in Uttarakhand? I think I have some images of what I think may be A.elongata somewhere, so shall look these out when I can. Such images (or any other members have) would represent a new entry for eFI.
A.elongata is recorded from near the top of Phulchoki mountain above Godawari, Nepal, in ‘Flora of Kathmandu Valley’ – according to this, its achenes are smaller than in A.rivularis more rounded and with straight beaks – the achenes in the first image above are immature and not fully in focus but have hooked beaks.

Anemone …??? Pity the lower leaves are not shown and close-ups of the ‘flowers’ are not available – perhaps you were avoiding the risk of leeches?
Nevertheless, I am, quickly (for once) able to SUGGEST an identification – though am not certain.
It is definitely an Anemone. It COULD be Anemone elongata.
HOPEFULLY, OTHER MEMBERS CAN TAKE CLOSE-UP IMAGES OF THIS SPECIES IN THE FUTURE.
IF you attempted to use Flowers of the Himalaya, then a problem would arise – either you would try and CONVINCE yourself (especially as only two images, not in close-up) are available that it belonged to one of the species described or illustrated as photos or line drawings.
I imagine the closest you would get is A.polyanthes or A.tetrasepala. Based upon the images you would, perhaps, plump for Anemone tetrasepala?
Here in lies a problem, you may well have not checked its geographic distribution. This species has not been recorded East of H.P.
Perhaps, you might think, you have a NEW record for Nepal?
NO. As I find myself having to repeat, good though ‘Flowers of the Himalaya’ is, IT IS NOT A FLORA. IT ONLY COVERS A FRACTION OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SPECIES CURRENTLY KNOWN FROM THE HIMALAYA.
In the case of Anemone, Flowers of the Himalaya says c. 17 species – whereas this book only describes 8 – so LESS THAN HALF. For MOST genera, the proportion of species per genus covered is a MUCH lower proportion.
There is a Supplement to Flowers of the Himalaya – which is available (indeed is an Oxford India Paperback, printed in New Delhi in 1997). The standard of colour reproduction is pretty good, so why should MUCH INFERIOR colour printed be acceptable in Indian publications since that year!? MORE MEMBERS OF THIS GROUP SHOULD BUY A COPY.
This has one more Anemone plus photos of 3 species illustrated as line drawings in the main volume but is nothing like the plant photographed in Nepal.
What of the 9 (or more) species not covered. Stewart lists 2 additional species, one, far too small and only known from the NW Himalaya whilst the second is a misidentification.
Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal lists a further 6 species. If one goes by altitudinal range, 5, conveniently eliminated – though one species has a lower limit close to 2700m, so should be considered but is not close to the plant photographed. One A.elongata is recorded from 2600-3500m – this fits with 2700m.
Flora of Kathmandu Valley has 3 species of Anemone. 2 are well-known: A.rivularis & A.vitifolia – which can be eliminated.
This leaves Anemone elongata D.Don. (first described in 1825). Recorded from 1800-2500m. This fits. I have seen what I understand to be this near the top of Mt. Phukcholi, above Godawari. The description provided could fit the photos but without them being close-up and characteristics missing from them, one cannot be sure. Furthermore, the reliability of the information in this ‘Flora’ varies.
IF correctly identified, this represents a NEW entry for eFI.
According to the Nepal Enumeration its distribution extends from Garwhal (so should be looked out for in Uttarakhand – perhaps members have observed it there)? It also is supposed to be found through to NEFA and what is now Meghalaya yet it is not recorded in ‘Flora of Bhutan’ (which covers Sikkim as well).
As for ‘supporting evidence’? There appears to be no pressed specimens of this species in the Kew herbarium (at least none available on their web-site). There are a couple of images available on the internet, yet the first is CLEARLY a misidentification for a cultivated plant – a form of Japanese Anemone (see: Link)- so that can be disregarded. The other, does not fit what I currently understand to be this species but cannot judge the reliability of the source.

Unfortunately, this is NOT a good specimen and it has suffered damage by insects. It was collected by or for Wallich in the 19th Century. There are 5 other, much more recent collections but these are yet to be scanned in….. BUT due to high resolution one can zoom in – and
see more detail than shown by Saroj’s photos.

A plant from 8000ft alt. from Kameng in Arunachal. Seems a Ranunculus sp. Try species of Anemone from your area. I am currently checking entries for Anemone within eFI. The major problem is that these images are inadequate to identify with confidence. There is a limit to what can be done if only one or two images not in close-up. Please, on future occasions, take good close-ups of both the upper and lower surfaces of flowers, upper foliage & lower foliage (both upper and lower surfaces), habit and habitat.
In a herbarium like Kew, if a pressed specimen arrives which is inadequate, then it is discarded.
Nevertheless, it MIGHT be a form of Anemone rivularis. I have a copy of Flora of Bhutan (which also covers Sikkim). It is possible there could be a species in AP similar to A.rivularis not found in Bhutan, which I do not currently know about.
I cannot justify devoting any more time to such images. We NEED those posting images to ensure they are of a reasonable standard and show the necessary characteristics otherwise it can be IMPOSSIBLE to be sure which species they belong. Yes, we can USUALLY tell which genus a plant belongs to.
I have indicated that I am available to advise on a one-to-one basis (in private) on how to take the sort of photos necessary to reliably identify plants. I currently do not consider I can give MEANINGFUL advice about plant photography which would apply to everyone.
Even with suitable cameras it takes time, effort and after a period, skill, to consistently take quality plant photos. Purchasing a particular camera is NOT the only factor involved.
In the past, it was not economic to take many shots of EACH and EVERY plant. It is now and the quality of digital lenses available on even modest compact cameras means that EVERY member of this group has the capability to take good plant photos and even students to afford a camera which with time, effort and after a period, skill, can produce images of a GOOD to HIGH standard.
Getting the EXPOSURE right for white and yellow flowers (in particular) on a sunny day is a challenge. I guess Anemone rivularis Buch.-Ham. ex DC. only ! . SK 3057 18 October 2021: 7 very high res. images.
