Requesting to please ID this plant bought from a nursery in Mumbai.
The pics were captured in December 2013.
It is thorny, the flowers are very tiny, I did not see any fruit…
It is used for bonsai and the name provided to me was ‘Segretia’ Sageretia thea of Rhamnaceae, commonly known as Pauper’s Tea. Thank you … long pending one with me Location: Victoria Peak, Hong Kong
Date: 2 November 2018
Elevation: 1300 ft.
Habit : Wild Looks from Rhamnaceae, may be Berchemia sp. Sageretia thea (Osbeck) M.C.Johnst. ??
Pl. check, though I am doubtful, the following: Please check for Sageretia theezans. Yes, to me also looks close.
Sageretia theezans Brongn. is a synonym of Sageretia thea (Osbeck) M.C. Johnst.
Yes … !
. Sageretia thea
Common Name – Chinese Sweet Plum
Family – Rhamnaceae
It is native small shrub species with edible fruits found across Western Himalayas…
From Bajaura, Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh Elevation -1100m asl
Photographed in June/July 2019
Here are the keys sent by …, in another thread, Just have a look:
Key to Sageretia species in Uttakhand: 1A: Inflorescence a spike 2A: Spike oblong, as long as or double the length of petiole of the subtending leaf (less than 1/3 the subtending leaf lamina); flowers up to 12 in number ….. S. santapaui 2B: Spike linear, more or less equalling subtending leaf lamina or sometimes smaller, but never less than ½ the length of subtending leaf; flowers 15-25 in number ….. S. devendrae 1B: Inflorescence a panicle 3A: Leaf length less than 2.0 cm …….. S. thea 3B: Leaf length more than 2.5 cm 4A: Abaxial leaf surface and petiole glabrous or sparsely hairy, especially in axil of veins; inflorescence spicate panicle with fascicled flowers …..S. hamosa 4B: Petiole and adaxial surface of leaves pubescent or tomentose on veins; inflorescence a panicle with racemose branches ……… S. filiformis
In the provided key it is mentioned that leaf length is less than 2cm in S.thea
But i don’t agree with this i myself just checked leaves of my above shared plants but they are reaching upto 5/6cm long and 3cm wide at maturity/base.
Moreover similar size is mentioned in other efloras ie.FoP and FoC also and this species is highly polymorphic in pubescence, dentation and size of leaf…
As … has provided the key so i feel rest of it is correct, as of now i don’t have experience with other sp. so can’t say but will try to find more species and compare in near future… Did you check with S. hamosa and S. filiformis ?
Did you check with the publication ?
I have just examined the live plants and i will say our species is only Sageretia thea based on the following observations – Inflorescence long spike which is as much as 2-3 times longer than length of subtending leaf, having flowers 20 to more than 30 with occasionally more than one flower at some floral nodes.
Leaves abaxially pubescent more hairy along midrib and veins , abaxially glabrous
Young branches minutely pubescent, bracteoles generally three dried, brown and fragile.
Also i am unable to see any demarcating line between ovary and style present in S.devendrae.
Following FoP i feel Sageretia thea is highly polymorphic sp. and variation occurs in leaves shape and crenation also the bracteoles are soft, self broken and are intact in only few flowers. Please see comment on this sp. in FoP
So it must be only Sageretia thea atleast for now…
I have attached some closeup fresh images to make it easier…

Thanks, … I agree with you. Id Rhamnus species.: 4 high res. images. Please check the attached images of the Rhamnus species, it is different from R. triquetra and virgata.
this one is edible, sweet in taste. locally called ANKOL, DANKOL.
Captured – Doda JK, also common in Kullu HP.
Alt. 800m asl. approx. Rhamnus persica Boiss. ?? yes sir it seems the same as per Herbarium specimen. Not Rhamnus it’s Sageretia thea (Rhamnaceae) or if following powo it should be called Sageretia brandrethiana Aitch. Actually there are several other species known from Western Himalaya including two recently described one’s from Uttrakhand but it’s not possible to distinguish them easily just from images. Some of key distinguishing character like leaf serration and pubescence are actually highly variable when plants are observed in natural habitat (not in herbarium). See comments in Flora of Pakistan
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=250075379 … if we are following POWO i think we should change our site Sageretia thea page name to S. brandrethiana with Sageretia thea var. brandrethiana (Aitch.) Qaiser & Nazim as its synonym because S. thea distribution is not shown in India. Pls check Sageretia theezans (Rhamnaceae). it matches with Sageretia thea
https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/m—z/r/rhamnaceae/sageretia/sageretia-thea. . Rhamnaceae ?? Maybe. Pl. check https://efloraofindia.com/2011/02/18/rhamnaceae/ I think it is close to images at Sageretia thea (Osbeck) M.C. Johnst.
