V. denticulata has larger leaves with prominent veins. Stems usually striate and green. Large stems striate with red and black. It is found in deciduous forests and less in evergreen. It is a large liana.
V. maderaspatana stems dry blackish, leaves are smaller and often more acute at the apex. It is found more in evergreen forests and rarely in deciduous patches. It also can be a very large plant covering many trees.

Hello, I can not Identify the above plant, ..this looks like lina…its located near Palghar district. I wish your leaf pictures were a bit clearer! But it looks like Ventilago denticulata Willd. (syn. Ventilago calyculata). The stem has characteristic red fissures. It is seen in Palghar district.

Thank you … The first picture in the post is the only one that shows leaves, the closest. The second picture shows lower surface of leaves, quality of picture is bare minimum 🙂

Yes, It is Not easy for me to recognize the species, the reddish (striated) stem helps in knowing V. denticulata. Unable to decide with this one. Leaves are not typical of V. maderaspatana. Can’t see the habit. Both species found in the area.

Id pl of the plant from Satkosia, Odisa, seen in mid Oct 19. The flowers remind of Ziziphus family, Rhamnaceae. Looks like Ventilago denticulata Willd. (syn. Ventilago calyculata), unless there is another species in Odisha very interesting. apparently, a liana.

Looks like Ventilago species. Are you indicating towards Ventilago leiocarpa ?? The key in FoC leads to Ventilago maderaspatana (Panicles terminal, fruits glabrous, lateral nerves ca 4 pairs etc.). I am taking V. denticulata Willd. to be a syn of V. calyculata Tulasne. and V. maderaspatana Gaertn (or madraspatana) to be a distinct species. There has been confusion in the names with different authors.
In my area both of these as well as V. bombaiensis are found and it is easy to differentiate them in the field, especially when in fruit.
All the images at V. maderaspatana seem to be correct.
I have a doubt about the first set of pictures under V. denticulata. They seem to be V. maderaspatana, as long as they are all of the same plant. The new leaves are clearly seen in the 4th picture, bottom line on the left. In fact if you click on the image it is correctly labelled.
As for keys, I don’t know which to follow.
V. bombaiensis is easy because flowers and fruit are in axillary fascicles. The leaves have glands in the axils of nerves on the underside. It is restricted to evergreen forests.

Climber ID needed:
Planted this 10 years ago in my garden, which I collected from my farm…. thinking it was some tree, but turned out to be a climber, and now it had grown big and has engulfed my Cassia fistula tree. Appreciate this climber id. Date/Time- August 2011 Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Hyderabad Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Garden Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- Climber Height/Length- 5-8 meters Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- Simple Check with Ventilago species, family: Rhamnaceae (may be Ventilago maderaspatan?) In Ventilago spp, leaf margin is serrate/dentate. Thanks a lot, checked some pictures on the net and it definetely matches Ventilago maderaspatan. Also forgot to mention that the seeds are one-winged. Can it be Ventilago denticulata as per images and details herein ? … the image Climber ID5.jpg does not seem to show red striated stem – characteristic of V. denticulata. Thus may not be it. The stem is uncharacteristic for sure. I think V. maderaspatana can be ruled out because the leaves don’t match.

Date: 1st November 2014 Not at all sure, but a guess is Rhamnus sp. Rhamnus species so far in efi. Rhamnaceae plant? I too think it is a Rhamnaceae, but not familiar with plants of this regions. Leaves remind me of Ventilago calyculata, and shape of flowers too. May be Ventilago calyculata Tulasne as suggested by … as per Flora of China and FoC illustration.
