Another set for id please, found on the way to VOF, near the end of the route.

Perhaps Potentilla argyrophylla

No. This is Geum elatum. Potentilla argyrophylla will have silvery hairs on the leaves. This one doesn’t have. Another difference is that some of the leaves have winged petioles and sometimes it looks like there are more than three leaflets.

Agreed with …, it is not P. argyrophylla as silky hairs are missing

But I feel it is not even Geum elatum (now Acomastylis elata) which is a much different and smaller plant
To me now this appears as Potentilla fulgens with interruptedly pinnate basal leaves and taller plant.

This cinquefoil was about the most common along with Acomastylus elata on my way to the Indrahar Pass. I started encountering it at about 2200m and continued to see it till about 3800m if I remember it correctly. I think this is likely to be Potentilla lineata. Please advise.

…, thanks for sharing. The plants with this mail having pinnate leaves is Potentilla fulgens and another trifoliolate with runners (passing through P.fulgens) is Fragaria nubicola.

Difficult to say with this evidence but the leaves look similar to Potentilla polyphylla and the hairy P. lineata. Undersurface of the leaves will help (silvery in lineata, light green in polyphylla).

Thanks, … It may be Potentilla lineata as per images & keys herein.

Potentilla polyphylla for you.
Loc.: On way to Churdhar, Himachal Pradesh (ca 1500m)
Date: 10th August, 2010.

I have been looking at images of a Potentilla posted from Nepal which I think may prove to be P.lineata (syn. P.fulgens). Checking
differences between this and P.polyphylla, I note that P.polyphylla is given a distribution of Kumaon to Bhutan not H.P.  Also, in Nepal its

altitudinal range is 2700-4600m, so to find it 1100m lower than previously recorded and in HP, would be a surprise. I therefore must cast doubt on the identification here. Will look again another time.

Further to my recent post, I have just checked with ‘Flora Simlensis’ (which includes Churdhar).  This has 10 species of Potentilla but not P.polyphylla.

I hope P. lineata

Potentilla only, but it is impossible to identify species without leaves.
It seems I have failed to convince members about the importance of leaves, stipules, bracts etc. One shot less of flowers and one close up leaves would greatly help in its identification. This is especially true of Geranium species also, and possibly all genera.

you have not failed we hear you but like … here I also end up going out with nonphotographers they rush you when you want to take pictures their priorities are different, even though they may like you or love you
or are very kind otherwise… still its a drag… sometimes works against our resolve to take all the appropriate pictures…

Actually we are so preoccupied with the flower, we forget to notice the leaves only !!, then after moving some distance we think, we should have taken the leaves photos also.
