ID confirmation MS310311 -22 – ID requested: I am attaching the photographs of a  shrub ( ?)  for confirmation of ID. The photo was taken on 27.12.2010 in Sakrebayalu, near Shimoga,  Karnataka.  I have only one photograph. Could this be a member of Annonaceae.

G. serrulata .. – but it’s described as a small tree and not a shrub. However, definitions apart, in the field it does / can look like a large shrub.

Grewia serrulata – Mulshi Pune29/10/2011: Grewia serrulataMulshi Pune 29/10/2011
Malvaceae (Previously Tiliaceae) Kaori
This Grewia is flowering profusely in
Mulshi area.
Interesting fact noted is : Flowers were partially open in the morning session whereas in the afternoon onwards I could find the clear open flowers as depicted in the pictures. Few weeks back I had noticed similar open flowers in the morning so couldn’t conclude the ID.

… the flower in the fourth picture with closed sepals is the faded flower. Flowers open in the evening like most white flowers and fade by morning.

i would like to know more about the Family Tiliaceae and Malaceae. You mention that Grewia belongs to Malvaceae previously Tiliaceae. Till date we are putting Grewia genus in Tiliaceae family. Can you provide us detail information about this merging.

Telugu names listed for Grewia serrulata at Forest Flora of Andhra Pradesh and Shodhganga are: pegala, potriki, thegalle

Some Tamil names listed for Grewia serrulata at Forest Flora of Andhra Pradesh are: anaikatti maram, narathai, udapai
Please help me with the names in native script if valid.
Above names are close to Malayalam names: ആനക്കൊട്ടിമരം anakkottimaram, നറുത narutha … facebook.

… adding some more names, listed in Botanical Survey of India: pirunnu, thavannu, uduppai.

Here are the Tamil scripts of anaikatti maram, narathai, udapai, uduppai
ஆனைகட்டி மரம், நாரத்தை, உடப்பை, உடுப்பை.

Pirunnu and Thavannu sound more like Telugu names to me. I am not sure, though.

… most probably Grewia serrulata.

this can be Grewia disperma from tiliaceae

Grewia disperma Rotler in Spreng., Syst. ed. 16, 2: 579, 1825; Almeida, Fl. Mah. 1: 155, 1996.

I assume G. disperma and G. serrulata are synonyms OR are they treated different.

Grewia serrulata DC. is a synonym of Grewia multiflora Juss.
Grewia disperma Rottler is a synonym of Grewia multiflora Juss.

Flora of Nepal only mentions: Grewia disperma

Your help in validation please. I had mistakenly identified as Trema orientalis because of its leaves but on careful observation of other photos i have come to the conclusion it is Grewia serrulata. Besides recently i have taken some photos (which i shall post later) which is Grewia serrulata and the leaves and flowers match. Kindly confirm. Photos taken at Aambyvalley Rd., Lonavala, Pune in Dec.16.

Yes, It is Grewia serrulata. However our group is working on the species complex, the same element also can be fairly used for Grewia multiflora too.

Grewia species in eFloraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ Biotik/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available on net)

Need to study, it is interesting specimens.

Please upload pictures displaying underside of leaves, flowers at different angle so that petals can be seen and provide sizes of leaf, sepal, petal.

The only species I could connect with FBI is G. salvifolia Heyne, but with a big question mark

Again a mixture of Grewia eripcarpa, G. asiatica and G abutilifolia, distinct one!!

Need more details, definitely something which not been recorded before!

Does not matches with current species available in efi so far as per comparative images at Grewia

Looking at leaves, it appears like Grewia flavescens

Thanks, …
But much different from images at Grewia flavescens Juss.

I think also does not have distribution over there (Chakrata) as per details at this link.

Grewia serrulata DC.

Thanks a lot, …

You are right. Matches with images at Grewia serrulata

I think we all were confused by the yellowish of the sepals.
