… upload has put me in dilemma. If we go by the paper kindly suggested by … (and it can’t be ignored being a very recent paper in a reputed Journal), then my plant fits P. lagascae in leaves, flowers, anthers and overall appearance, but when we look at fruiting calyx the size, shape and colour does not allow you to ignore P. angulata as per this paper. I would request colleagues to kindly give your opinion. And yes colleagues Sir, your plant too seems P. longifolia Nutt. as the one posted by …. Anthers are said to be greenish-blue. As per the link Missouri Plants it doesn’t seem to be P. longifolia whose anthers are yellow and even the fruiting calyx doesn’t match. I am adding complete description of the plant and also other details and using bold text for similar character with these photos Please note that pedicel of P. angulata could range from 7 -10mm while on anthesis. according to this source: Hear It is interesting to have another species in contention from the minima complex. Differentiating key for P. minima, P. angulata and P. lagascae are available at Eflora of China website. Could you kindly provide key to separate P. longifolia from these? … your plant should be Physalis angulata L. based on the flower and fruit characters. Fruiting calyx is glabrous, green with purple nerves on it is one of the distinguishing characters. Prof. V.S.Raju et al. have solved the problem in identifying Physalis. Pl check this link for the paper: Plant systematics This was my first observation when I uploaded the plant. Flowers, anthers and fruiting calyx match P. angulata, only the leaves put me to doubt. They are supposed to be dentate in P. angulata. …, i think it is a variation (the species is said to be highly variable). This should really help in understanding our photographs. – Yes looks like P. angulata – These are mine. Taken on my property in August 2010. Presume they are Physalis minima. – I think the same Physalis angulata, since P. minima L. is no longer an accepted name http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-29600210 – Dr. Almeida in his ‘Flora of Maharashtra’ Vol 3-B lists Physalis angulata & Physalis minima as distinct species. – Perhaps you did not get my point. P. minima L. is no longer a valid name and as such can’t be used for any species, in the same way as we can’t call any species as Solanum indicum. The plants hitherto known as Physalis minima L. are as such correctly P. angulata L. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-29604078 – Sought a clarification from Dr. Almeida. Physalis For ID : Oman : 230613 : AK-3 : Attachments (3). 5 posts by 3 authors. This is Physalis minima.. Most of the descriptions and plates on which Linnaeus based his species also refer to P. angulata rather than to the small-flowered prostrate plant, usually known as “P. minima” (that we treat here as Physalis lagascae).
Conversely, in the Indian taxonomic literature, we are dealing with two distinct elements (Table 1) under the name P. minima: First one is an erect, robust, smooth, tetraploid taxon with bigger flowers (>7 mm across), bluish anthers, and fruiting calyces tinged purple No. 2 RAJU et al.:The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis 241(P. angulata). The second one is a diffuse to erect, relatively smaller, pubescent, diploid taxon with smaller (<6 mm across) flowers (parviflora or micrantha), yellow anthers, and greenish fruiting calyces (P. lagascae). The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis in the Indian Subcontinent (2007) by Vatsavaya S RAJU, C S REDDY & K G RAJARAO (With Keys-Physalis angulata, Physalis grisea, Physalis lagascae & Physalis pruinosa)- 45 (2): 239–245(2007) Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica-
Abstract : The status of the names, Physalis minima L. and P. maxima Mill. (Solanaceae), and their alleged presence on the Indian subcontinent are discussed. The issues of nativity and identity of Linnaean Physalis minima are long-debated while the use of the name P. maxima Mill. and its report from India are recent. The available evidence indicates that the name “P. minima L.” is misapplied to two different elements, viz., P. angulata L. and P. lagascae Roem. & Schult. The name Physalis minima L. may be rejected as nomen confusum, for which the paper provides the primary information. As on today, it is submerged under the synonymy of P. angulata L. The correct name for the widely known P. minima is P. lagascae. The name “P. maxima Mill.” applied to the escape and naturalized weed in the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere is to be substituted by P. pruinosa L., a name misapplied to P. grisea (Waterf.) M.Martínez. As per info from KEW, GRIN and efloras, Physalis minima L. is a valid name. If this species in this thread can be same depends only on sizes. What about Physalis angulata? I can’t understand where the problem lies. Physalis lagascae Roem. & Schult. of “The myth….” is same as P. minima L. of FoC. And KEY of the both species is there, in the FoC and in the pdf referred in this thread.

Seeking comments and thoughts — is it valid to consider P. lagascae as a separate identity, and not as a synonym of P. minima until such fact is reflected at NPGS / GRIN, KEW, and such authoritative sites ? Nice to read all the descriptions as well as the links. Undoubtedly this plant is Physalis lagascae very common around Kolkata and West Bengal along with Physalis minima. P minima is always given in B.Sc classes for taxonomic studies even I did it. Do you mean to say you are already treating them as separate species ? This plant would be P. longifolia Nutt. since corolla has brown spots at base. This plant was named as P. minima in FOS later corrected to above. P. minima is included in FFOS. Thank you …, Thank you very much, … this is an interesting turn to the ID !!. I think it should be Physalis angulata L. as per images and details herein. . Does it occur in India ? I have not yet seen a single post on it in Indian Flora. And, if only morphological difference between P. joe-diasii and P. angulata is deeply dentate leaf margin in the former, then we need to follow few plants of P. joe-diasii for its whole annual life cycle ………reason is, P. angulata leaves are big and with prominently dentate margin in its early life, later leaf size becomes much smaller ……….1/3 to 1/4 of its younger days, plus margin becomes entire. What happens to P. joe-diasii late in its life ?
Thanks, …, for the well researched question as well answer. But I did not find a single observation among hundreds of observation in efi site.
With regard to P. joe-diasii and P. angulata, my observation after perusing all observations in efi site is that they may be same as I do not find any other morphological difference except for the leaves. Also leaves are showing intermittent features. All this may be either due to substantial variation in the leaves or due to constant hybridization in the wild.
