My Physalis minima/P. angulata/P. lagascae : Attachments (3). 14 posts by 6 authors.

… upload has put me in dilemma. If we go by the paper kindly suggested by … (and it can’t be ignored being a very recent paper in a reputed Journal), then my plant fits P. lagascae in leaves, flowers, anthers and overall appearance, but when we look at fruiting calyx the size, shape and colour does not allow you to ignore P. angulata as per this paper. I would request colleagues to kindly give your opinion.
It is another matter that some authorities (GRIN) consider P. lagascae as synonym of P. minima. Then we have to decide between P. minima (P. lagascae) or P. angulata.

And yes colleagues
Two more things to be noted in my specimens. The anthers seem to be bluish in colour (P. angulata) whereas they are yellow in … specimen (P. minima/lagascae). Another feature to note is that Flora of China keys out the two species on the basis of fruiting pedicel being 10-25 mm long in P. angulata, 3-8 mm in P. minima. Mt seems to be at least less than 10 mm.

Sir, your plant too seems P. longifolia Nutt. as the one posted by …. Anthers are said to be greenish-blue.

As per the link Missouri Plants it doesn’t seem to be P. longifolia whose anthers are yellow and even the fruiting calyx doesn’t match.

I am adding complete description of the plant and also other details and using bold text for similar character with these photos
Purdue

Please note that pedicel of P. angulata could range from 7 -10mm while on anthesis. according to this source: Hear

It is interesting to have another species in contention from the minima complex. Differentiating key for P. minima, P. angulata and P. lagascae are available at Eflora of China website. Could you kindly provide key to separate P. longifolia from these?

… your plant should be Physalis angulata L. based on the flower and fruit characters. Fruiting calyx is glabrous, green with purple nerves on it is one of the distinguishing characters. Prof. V.S.Raju et al. have solved the problem in identifying Physalis. Pl check this link for the paper: Plant systematics
also pl read: Banglagol

This was my first observation when I uploaded the plant. Flowers, anthers and fruiting calyx match P. angulata, only the leaves put me to doubt. They are supposed to be dentate in P. angulata.

…, i think it is a variation (the species is said to be highly variable). The description in the following reference reads as: “… Leaves simple, alternate, ovate, acute, margins irregularly toothed,…”
Banglagol

A point mentioned in article of Prof Raju et al….
… Thus, several of the Physalis species and their natural hybrids are now well-established invasive weeds of disturbed landscapes and crops throughout the tropics, including Asia. …
x x x x x x
makes me wonder whether we are seeing natural hybrids.

Solnacaea week:Physalis minima:
Physalis minima found at Sawantwadi, Maharashtra

–  Plant systematics– this link it gives details of species Physalis
It says (vi) Nicolson et al. (1988) reduced P. minima L. as a synonym of P. angulata L.
There is a need to typify Physalis minima L. However, Edmonds (personal communication) opines that the typification of the Linnaean P. minima is complex, with the lectotype (Hort. Cliff. no. 62, Physalis 5) being conspecific to P. angulata. Therefore, she considers it as a synonym of the latter in her forthcoming account of Solanaceae in Flora of Tropical East Africa. Most of the descriptions and plates on which Linnaeus based his species also refer to P. angulata rather than to the small-flowered prostrate plant, usually known as “P. minima” (that we treat here as Physalis lagascae).
Conversely, in the Indian taxonomic literature, we are dealing with two distinct elements (Table 1) under the name P. minima:
First  one is an erect, robust, smooth, tetraploid taxon with bigger flowers (>7 mm across), bluish anthers, and fruiting calyces tinged purple   No. 2 RAJU et al.:The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis 241(P. angulata). The second one is a diffuse to erect, relatively smaller, pubescent, diploid taxon with smaller (<6 mm across) flowers (parviflora or micrantha), yellow anthers, and greenish
fruiting calyces (P. lagascae).

– Yeah Key is useful but then i must be wrong in id of my plant,i think picture i hv posted should be Physalis angulata according to this key..is it…

– Thanks … for useful information. This should really help in understanding our photographs.

– Yes looks like P. angulata
Here is mine from Delhi

– These are mine. Taken on my property in August 2010. Presume they are Physalis minima.

– I think the same Physalis angulata, since P. minima L. is no longer an accepted name http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-29600210

– Dr. Almeida in his ‘Flora of Maharashtra’ Vol 3-B lists Physalis angulata & Physalis minima as distinct species.
Furthermore, he states that though P.angulata has been recorded from a few places in Maharashtra, it is a native of the West Indies.
Will therefore have to stick with my plants being Physalis minima.

– Perhaps you did not get my point. P. minima L. is no longer a valid name and as such can’t be used for any species, in the same way as we can’t call any species as Solanum indicum. The plants hitherto known as Physalis minima L. are as such correctly P. angulata L. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-29604078

– Sought a clarification from Dr. Almeida. His take on this:
–         Most of the Physalis species found in India are not indigenous but introduced from the Americas.
–         Linnaeus described Physalis minima and hence a type specimen must exist.
–         The nomenclature of Indian species is rather ambiguous – specimens initially described [possibly even in Cooke’s Flora] as P. minima had large flowers and would therefore now be labelled P.angulata.
–         P.minima [with tiny flowers] does exist and has been recorded by Dr. Almeida in a few places including the Borivali N.P., Bombay.
My plants have large flowers and would therefore be P.angulata.

The plants and fruiting calyx of P. peruviana are densely villous. This seems to be P. angulata.

As earlier indicated today in another thread, P. minima is no longer a valid name, at least for Indian plants. This is P. angulata.

Here I am attaching one Physalis species.

Could be P. lagascae

I was able to locate one more picture taken at the same place.
These seem to be growing all over the place after rains.
This picture was taken on 19/9/2010.
I hope it helps.

I hope Physalis angulata.

Many thanks … for validating.
I was wondering the plant would be other than P. angulata – as the anthers are not the blue we expect to see.
Putting here a cropped version of one of the above photos to get a look at the anthers; OR I could be missing some other feature of P. angulata

Fruit shape, purple lines, size are distinctive

Thank you very much … for the clarity. Will correct my notes soon.

First one is an erect, robust, smooth, tetraploid taxon with bigger flowers (>7 mm across), bluish anthers, and fruiting calyces tinged purple No. 2 RAJU et al.:The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis 241(P. angulata). The second one is a diffuse to erect, relatively smaller, pubescent, diploid taxon with smaller (<6 mm across) flowers (parviflora or micrantha), yellow anthers, and greenish
fruiting calyces (P. lagascae).

The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis in the Indian Subcontinent (2007) by Vatsavaya S RAJU, C S REDDY & K G RAJARAO (With Keys-Physalis angulata, Physalis grisea, Physalis lagascae & Physalis pruinosa)- 45 (2): 239–245(2007) Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica-

Abstract : The status of the names, Physalis minima L. and P. maxima Mill. (Solanaceae), and their alleged presence on the Indian subcontinent are discussed. The issues of nativity and identity of Linnaean Physalis minima are long-debated while the use of the name P. maxima Mill. and its report from India are recent. The available evidence indicates that the name “P. minima L.” is misapplied to two different elements, viz., P. angulata L. and P. lagascae Roem. & Schult. The name Physalis minima L. may be rejected as nomen confusum, for which the paper provides the primary information. As on today, it is submerged under the synonymy of P. angulata L. The correct name for the widely known P. minima is P. lagascae. The name “P. maxima Mill.” applied to the escape and naturalized weed in the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere is to be substituted by P. pruinosa L., a name misapplied to P. grisea (Waterf.) M.Martínez.

As per info from KEW, GRIN and efloras, Physalis minima L. is a valid name. If this species in this thread can be same depends only on sizes.

What about Physalis angulata?

I can’t understand where the problem lies. Physalis lagascae Roem. & Schult. of “The myth….” is same as P. minima L. of FoC. And KEY of the both species is there, in the FoC and in the pdf referred in this thread.

Photos at flickr photostream, triggered … to query whether the plant would be P. angulata …or… P. lagascae.
My feeling was P. minima (syn. P. lagascae) as per NPGS / GRIN … because the flowers have yellow-brown anthers unlike bluish in P. angulata (Ref; Missouri Plants)
Revisited Plant systematic to check on … query,
The PDF article: The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis  is interesting; talks about confusion regarding P. minima on Indian subcontinent
It highlights one species confused for other. P. minima has naturalized pan-tropically, is a fact.
However, its description could be loose enough for mistaking it for another species, at least on the Indian subcontinent, specifically P. lagascae.
As per this article, my posted plant could be thus P. lagascae.
Comments please.

I ‘ve also read the mentioned paper “The myth of “minima” and “maxima”, the species of Physalis“. This way u are right ur photograph matche with P. lagascae

Many thanks … for validation.
Seeking comments and thoughts — is it valid to consider P. lagascae as a separate identity, and not as a synonym of P. minima until such fact is reflected at NPGS / GRIN, KEW, and such authoritative sites ?

Nice to read all the descriptions as well as the links.
The plant posted earlier by me also appears to be same P. lagascae

Undoubtedly this plant is Physalis lagascae very common around Kolkata and West Bengal along with Physalis minima. P minima is always given in B.Sc classes for taxonomic studies even I did it.

Do you mean to say you are already treating them as separate species ?
What are your thoughts about their synonymy at
1) NPGS / GRIN … http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?401798
2) PIER … HEAR

This plant would be P. longifolia Nutt. since corolla has brown spots at base. This plant was named as P. minima in FOS later corrected to above. P. minima is included in FFOS.

Thank you …,
For indicating the difference and focusing on the minor point which was important for the identification.

Thank you very much, … this is an interesting turn to the ID !!.
But, slightly confused … Missouri Plants site describes the flower to be pendant, have purple at base (in the photo illustrated however looks the typical brown), have purple filaments, and the yellow anthers look very different. Would picture the flower of P. longifolia hanging like Trichodesma species.

I think it should be Physalis angulata L. as per images and details herein.

Physalis lagascae in FOI : 6 posts by 3 authors.
In Physalis lagascae in FOI, all images appears to be incorrect.
Ist image is of Physalis pruinosa
2nd & 3rd image are of Physalis angulata
Physalis lagascae appears to be different as per

Flowers of India appears to be not working. I do not know whether Physalis lagascae in FOI has been corrected or not.

For that matter, we do not have any image for Physalis lagascae in EFI as well. Does it occur in India ? I have not yet seen a single post on it in Indian Flora. And, if only morphological difference between P. joe-diasii and P. angulata is deeply dentate leaf margin in the former, then we need to follow few plants of P. joe-diasii for its whole annual life cycle ………reason is, P. angulata leaves are big and with prominently dentate margin in its early life, later leaf size becomes much smaller ……….1/3 to 1/4 of its younger days, plus margin becomes entire. What happens to P. joe-diasii late in its life ?

Thanks, …, for the well researched question as well answer.

Catalogue of life gives distribution of Physalis lagascae only in NW-India (I).
But I did not find a single observation among hundreds of observation in efi site.
With regard to P. joe-diasii and P. angulata, my observation after perusing all observations in efi site is that they may be same as I do not find any other morphological difference except for the leaves. Also leaves are showing intermittent features. All this may be either due to substantial variation in the leaves or due to constant hybridization in the wild.
You may publish a suitable paper if you like with these observations in efi site.

Thanks very much … for this observation about Physalis (joe-diasii VS angulata).

Kindly identify the plant.  I have copied the format of …
Date/Time- 18.9.2019
Location-Place, Altitude, GPS-  Chennai, 100  MSL
Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Wild
Plant Habit-Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- Herb
Height/Length-  20 cl (roughly)
Flower – yellowish

For me it looks like Physalis minima L. (accepted name as per theplantlist :
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2549450).
According to other link of theplantlist;
http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-29600210
Physalis minima L. is a synonym of Physalis angulata var. angulata. Which is the valid name and the latest version.

Format copied: well done, I am glad.

Identity: matches descriptions
it says yellow flower with violet throat and leaves with secondary nerves looping near the margin. these venation pattern was what had attracted my attention in the past and now.
for newer/ latest names etc, we should refer it to … perhaps?

There should be no minima/ maxima in Physalis by now. The posted specimen fits the bill for Physalis angulata {and by same token Physalis joe-diasii as well …… because the difference between two is only leaf margin, as per description in EFI, and definitely this needs be studied more.
In my view, a difference of single character in two species is ok for field work, there should be more on closer examination.}

Thanks …  Which official website needs to be checked for the latest/ correct names ?  As of now I am referring to theplantlist as the authentic website.

Better check efi site as we have been correcting which ever source best suits us and also depending on our discussions.

I shall err on the side of Physalis angulata, though in flower, inner ring of color is in form of big spots, color matches with that of P. angulata. No mature capsule ?

Not yet mature capsule. Lets us wait for further opinions from other members.

… can hardly be wrong. I agree with him for Physalis angulata as per comparative images at Physalis

I didn’t know that there are many variables, the fruit image that I already sent was another plant’s.  So I am sharing the correct fruit image of said plant,

I too agree with … but for confirmation need some more information, like clear habit and flower pics,
Sorry, …,  hope it’s not lagascae because haven’t echinate fruit,

Please go through this post of mine, we don’t have P. minima as such in India
Let us evaluate our Physalis species (google.com)
