Yes, should be Breynia retusa in sterile condition.

May be Breynia vitis-idaea as well.

Only when the plant produces flowers/ fruits it’s real identity can be found !

Looks like one of the Sauropus  sps.( Euphorbiaceae)
I have Sauropus androgynus (the protein plant) in my house. Your plant has the resemblance to the one I have. Either it could be a different species or an ecological variation. Only experts can decide . Nevertheless, watch out for the flowers and fruits.

As said by …, I too think this as a different species of Sauropus. Pl follow the given link to see the images of S. androgynous posted by me a few days before. The leaves look very different here.
I request you to pl check with Fl. Assam which I am unable to access here in Korea.

Here are some additional photographs of the species

I think Glochidion ellipticum Wight once again

It is difficult to believe a species of Glochidion by its overall appearence. Thanks for the identity.

    It is Glochidion ellipticum

Here the male calyx segments are 6-lobed and each lobe is again bilobulate. This character distinguishes this species from Breynia quadrangularis which is always having six triangular -lanceolate lobes of male calyx.
Airy Shaw (1972) and Van Welzen (2003) considered and treated both of these species as conspecific but B. quadrangularis is in my opinion is distinct on this character as the characters of the male calyx are of great diagnostic importence in Breynia

Is there further change in the matter pl ?

This is matter of opinion only.
My present comment and identification as above is based on the following publication:
Chakrabarty, T. & Balakrishnan, N. P. 2015. Reinstatement of four taxa synonymized under Breynia quadrangularis with proposal for a new subgenus Hemisauropus (Phyllanthaceae). J. Econ. Taxon. Bot. 39(3-4): 415-419.
We have one advantage over them. Our publication is based on the study of available specimens in the major Indian herbaria while their paper is based on studies on old gatherings available in the European herbaria.  Thus we are in a better position to assess the range of variation exhibited by the relevant taxa.  Welzen & al. never visited India.
I am giving an example here. In 2014, I. M. Turner jeoperdized the nomenclature of Terminalia sect. Pentaptera by removing the name T. elliptica Willd. applied by Gangopadhyay & Chakrabarty, 1992 for an assortment of species variously treated in Indian floras and treatments as T. alata, T. crenulata, T. coriacea and T. tomentosa and adding the same to Terminalia arjuna as a synonym and proposing to conserve the name T. arjuna against T. elliptica.  I wish Turner would have seen the specimens in the Indian herbaria before arriving at such a conclusion!  I will come back to you as soon as my paper in this regard is published!

Thanks a lot, … I will change accordingly.

The Cup and Saucer plant is Holmskioldia sanguinea belonging to the family Lamiaceae.
This plant is a relative of Sauropus androgynus commonly called Star gooseberry, Sweet leaf etc. S. androgynus is a popular leafy vegetable in SE Asia.
It is common in the gardens in Trivandrum and we use its leaf as a vegetable.

This is not Holmskioldia sanguine. It is a big cvlimber (looks similar to Bougeinvilla plant from distance). Please see the link at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holmskioldia_sanguinea for the real Holmskioldia sanguinea.

The photographs are Sauropus quadrangularis (Willd.) Muell.-Arg. (=Sauropus compressus Muell.-Arg.) showing variation.

    I guess some Phyllanthaceae !

What do you think about Greynia androgynus ? (older genus : Sauropus)
Could this species present pink fruit more than white one’s ?

    Looks close !

    I agree with …

The colour of calyx and fruit were bothering me as they look different from images at
    https://efloraofindia.com/2011/03/28/sauropus-androgynus/

    But it should be OK.

    Breynia androgyny.

Excellent attempt of presenting posts, … They look good.
About the ID, the calyx does not look the typical “enlarged”. Surely it must be some other species of Breynia. Will wait for comments.

Thank you so much … The entire credit goes to you, my Guru!
Yes, it is a tentative ID. I am looking forward to also hear from …

It is correctly pointed out that the fruiting calyx is not enlarged enough to call it Breynia retusa. The only alternative left is B. vitis-idaea which it is not. Hence I am giving it benefit of doubt and calling it B. retusa, and the variation in size may be an individual variation. I have no intention of calling it a distinct entity, rather it is intermediate between the two above mentioned species.

Thank you very much … for sorting the doubt.

Breynia lanceolata (Phyllanthaceae) : 3 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (2)
Botanical name: Breynia lanceolata (Hook.f.) Welzen & Pruesapan. Basionym: Sauropus lanceolatus Hook.f. Synonym: Sauropus rhamnoides Blume.
    Photographer: Dr. Santanu Dey.
    Location: Nagaland, India.
Habit: Shrubs or small trees, sometimes scandent or climing.
Habitat: In inland forests or edges of primary forests at low altitudes.
Distribution: India (Nicobar Islands, North-eastern India), Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and Lesser Sunda Islands.

After examining the type of Breynia lanceolata as well as Sauropus rhamnoides, I now feel that this is a misidentification. This should be the common species Breynia retusa.
    I regret this misinformation.

Is this Breynia used in Homeopathy?

    Hello everyone: 3 images.
I would be very grateful if you could help me identify this species.

Taken at open forest In Mizoram.
I know its a Breynia sp, but I could not make out the species.

Welcome dear, excellent photography, looks unique, not any species represented on Flowers of India. Hope some member finds a correct ID.

I guess this should be  Breynia retusa (Dennst.) Alston only !

    You can try Breynia gynophora.

Looks different from GBIF specimens of Breynia gynophora.
May be Breynia retusa only as per images and details herein.

That was my guess … !

    Had small round red berries.
Could not get any closer to it.

I think, Breynia vitis-idea of Euphorbiaceae family. It says taken on the way to Kodaikananal but no information regarding at what altitude, what habitat type and etc. Please provide such information to make the id process easy.

It was at a higher altitude in the mountains travelling from Munnar to Kodaikanal along the way. Won’t be able to give the exact altitude as the picture was taken casually while travelling.

It is Breynia vitis-idaea (Burm.f.) C.E.C. Fischer of Euphorbiaceae. The spelling is idaea, not idea!

Yes I think … is right. Breynia vitis-idaea

    Could this be Sauropus albiflorus?

    Looks like Phyllanthus reticulatus

    Isn’t it Breynia vitis-idaea?

Is the stem glabrous? It looks like it, so I think the Breynia vitis- idaea more likely.

I agree with …, matches best with Breynia vitis-idaea

This is not a Phyllanthus sp. It is Breynia vitis-idaea of Euphorbiaceae.

Many thanks for the identification. Yes …, the stem was glabrous. It should be Breynia vitis-idaea (Burm.f.) Fischer of Euphorbiaceae. I would like to know the Tamil name for this shrub.

    ID please.
This plant does not seem to be the common cup-saucer plant Breynia retusa; the “saucer” is missing here.
The plant was about 2m high on the slope; the pendant male flowers about 10 – 12 mm long, about 4 – 5 mm across.
The spherical fruits were about 7 – 8 mm dia; not very sure.
Breynia ¿ species ? … (family: Phyllanthaceae, Euphorbiaceae)

As the saucer is missing, the other common Indian species, Breynia vitis-idaea should be considered.

Yes I agree with your identification

    I would like to know:
Habit – Height, then whether erect, scandent or bushy
    Fruits – dry or fleshy
    Sepals – 5 or 6

Sorry to say that these are the only pictures from my old collection when I did not have the knowledge of plant photography.

Appears to be Phyllanthaceae by the similarity in foliage.  May be Phyllanthus or Breynia.

Yes …, This is an accepted name. I was hesitating to call this name as the fruitng pedicels here appearing to be  somewhat longer than usual.

    Breynia vitis-idaea, I think.

Yes, it is a morphological variant of Breynia vitis-idaea; I have collected both varieties. the leaves are thick, coriaceous, but it is described by many as thin papery leaves; the fruit shape is also different from the traditional descriptions.

    Looks like Bridelia retusa.

    DV :: 30MAR11 – 0611 :: Breynia / Phyllanthus species:
Shrub about 5 – 7 ft, growing in vicinity of a stream.
This plant best visualized as larger version of Breynia retusa (cup-saucer plant).
    Date/Time : March 30, 2011 at 6.11pm IST
Location Place : outskirts of Madikeri, Karnataka … 12.451091, 75.711816 (on
Google maps <http://goo.gl/maps/CLqp> … please be patient while downloading map)
Altitude : 3597 ft (above mean sea level)

Yes .., your visualization is quite close. It is B. vitis-idaea, but you need to see the fruits to be sure.

    At Flowers of India http://www.flowersofindia.MountainCoffeeBush…,
we have .. plant identified by …. Calling … to validate my plant as Breynia vitis-idaea

I tend to agree with .. id on account of leaf shape and the length of pedicel in male flowers. But a fruiting specimen would really help to confirm the id. As you know, fruiting calyx is enlarged in B. retusa whereas it is not enlarged in B. vitis-idaea.

    … a counter-query: Is / Are there any other species close to B. vitis-idaea ?
If B. retusa is the only closest one, then this plant is not it as per my perception … because the flowers that are seen in the posted plant are comparatively larger … as much as 2 – 3 times larger than that of B. retusa.

Without female flowers and fruits it is not possible to comment on the correct identity of the images.

Thank you very very much … for the clarity regarding limitation to resolve the ID of this query.
Someday when I visit Coorg again (hopefully during fruiting season of this plant), I will make it a point to go the site to get the photos.

    Yes, it’s ..

    Breynia oblongifolia in FOI:

Images of Breynia oblongifolia by Bubai ji in FOI looks to be of Breynia vitis-idaea, as per images and details herein and as per discussions at ANOCT07 Please identify this Phyllanthaceae member.
I could not find Breynia oblongifolia anywhere in India as per details from different sources at Breynia, including POWO and CoL.
    Pl. correct.

I think you are right. The leaves don’t agree with Breynia oblongifolia. The rounded leaf tips are a bit puzzling, but this one image is not sufficient to conclude anything.
