Galinsoga quadriradiata is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family which is known by several common names, including shaggy soldier, hairy galinsoga, and fringed quickweed. It is found throughout most of the temperate world, but apparently its native home is Mexico. In Portuguese-speaking countries where it is widely naturalized – e.g. in Brazil – it is known as botão-de-ouro.
As an agricultural weed it can reduce crop yields by up to 50%.[1]
This is an annual herb which varies in appearance. The main stem reaches anywhere from 10 to 60 centimeters in height and may branch or not. The petioled leaves are oval and serrated and are covered in a coat of soft hairs. The small flower heads are up to a centimeter wide and have rounded center filled with many disc florets usually in a shade of bright yellow. There are five white ray florets widely spaced around the center, each an oval shape with one or two deep notches in the end. The fruit is a small achene with a large pappus.

I think Galinsoga quadriradiata as per details and keys herein and as per comparative images at Galinsoga not sure of its exact id but if it is Galinsoga parviflora Cav. how does something from peru get into indian wilds.

Both of these occur together. To me the pics from Shimla may be G.quadriradiata but without specimens difficult to determine. In 2nd, 3rd and 6th image, though not clear, hairs on the upper part of the stem appears to have glandular & dense simple, so these may be Galinsoga quadriradiata as per keys herein.

Yes …, it is Galinsoga parviflora………. We take it as Galinsoga parviflora for present, but I request young researchers to be on look out for possible occurrence of G. quadriradiata in India. This Mexican species is fast spreading elsewhere: Thank you … I will visit the plants with my camera soon and have a closer look. I will also collect a couple of heads and report back the observed characteristics.
I brought a sample with 3-4 flower heads yesterday evening and looked under the microscope. The flower is too small to reveal its inner parts properly with my inadequate equipment. I am not able to make out much from these images but perhaps I am not looking properly. Please advise. 7 images. Habitat: Wild Galinsoga parviflora is a very common weed in Srinagar and perhaps most of Kashmir today. It is perhaps the second alien species which is outcompeting the local weeds as it has spread widely over the past two decades. The first alien species to do so was Conyzia canadensis which in late 1950’s (the earliest time I can remember) was already so well established that it even had a local name “Shal-e- Lot” meaning Foxtail. I suspect that another American invasive plant Symphyotrichum subulatum is well on its way to becoming the third problem species here as a few years back it was rarely seen but is now quite common. Some scientists at the Botany Department of Kashmir University have attributed the invasiveness of Conyzia to epigenetic modifications. The same may be true for these two also. Unfortunately these invasive plants are neither ornamental nor good pot herbs. Kathmandu should be prepared to welcome an unwelcome visitor. can your plant be G. quadriradiata?, densely hairy stems and leaves and larger ray florets. |
