Fwd: Verification of ID for Impatiens devendrae ??? : 7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (9).
I am enclosing some pictures of Impatiens for verification of ID.
Date: 26 JULY, 2014
Location: Dolakha District, East Nepal
Altitude : 7000 ft.

efi page on Impatiens devendrae

This is not I. devendrae – it looks superficially similar, however:

1 stem and leaves are less or more hairy (glabrous in I. devendrae)
2 lateral petals lacks characteristic ornage/rusty markings
3 lower of lateral petals has different shape than in I. devendrae.
4 upper petal has strong pink/rosa markings
I have no idea what species it is however.

The plant appears as Impatiens glandulifera

It looks little bit different from I grandulifera.

It looks like I. discolor, however not many pictures were available in the website for proper verification.

Not many images in Google for ID validation. Need your help for ID validation !

I guess it is Impatiens kathmanduensis Grey-Wilson !
I shall be posting latest images from the same location soon.

Impatiens discolor DC.  ??
Impatiens kathmanduensis Grey-Wilson   ???
Elevation not matching with I. discolor according to efloranepal.

To identify the Impatiens well pressed herbarium specimens with flowers and bottled specimens in alcohol are needed.

Thank you … Unfortunately I did not collect the specimen.

Nothing matches with images at Impatiens kathmanduensis except superficial similarity.

If these images are of Impatiens kathmanduensis Grey-Wilson as per paper at Link, than images at SK674 25 JUL-2017:ID may not be of Impatiens kathmanduensis as tentatively identified earlier.

Here I don’t have any clue and this one need to wait unfortunately :-(.

I just returned form break.
I still have problems with my computer and I am still working in field so any progress will be slow.

This plant seems like I. kathmanduensis made by C. Grey Wilson, but S. Akiyama merged it to I. discolour.

Impatiens discolor DC.  ???

May be as appears close to images in your other posts as below:

I guess we should wait for opinions from experts !

That is always welcome, if it comes.

Have you checked comparative images at Impatiens ?

Yes, …!

I do not know if I am right or wrong, but I find it closer to images at Impatiens kathmanduensis Grey-Wilson
It is understood that S. Akiyama merged it to I. discolour.

Do you agree with my suggested id?

Akiyama report pages 162,163 and 164.
I guess it matches.

Thank you … I guessed it to be I. discolor/ I. kathmanduensis but doubtful about the elevation.

But altitude is not much different from other posts at Impatiens kathmanduensis

Can we verify its natural habitat elevation from somewhere?

I see I need to step up.
To know species geographical distribution and its altitudinal limits one need to know species.
When we have species which is problematic, seen in different ways by different authors, we simply can’t collect good enough data.
Also, altitudinal limits are not absolute limits. In Poland some mountainous species, growing typically above 1000 m a.s.l. grow also along rivers in lowland part of Poland, in much different climatic conditions. One need to remember about different conditions on southern and northern slopes, etc.
For many species we have only little data on both geographical distribution and altitudinal limits… There is a lot of work for next generations left.
I am still busy yet. I hope to be more active later in autumn.

Thanks, …, for a very imp. observation. We have to focus more on identity rather than on the elevation. Identity comes first and not the elevation.

Yes, you are right …, First the identification then whether it is endemic or widespread/universal etc and even in endemic species, its important to know (for academia), whether its central population or peripheral population, etc etc but that’s academic. elevation and tree lines are ever changing i think, esp with the glaciers almost gone and temperature creeping up, and animals moving further up. so that’s query is neither here nor there. lets focus on good photography that  depicts all relevant diagnostic features and when submitting the case all that is in the posting guidelines

ok. Thank you.

Is this too Impatiens discolor DC.  ??

May be after seeing the variations at Impatiens kathmanduensis

I feel slight difference but may be same. However, I discolor and I. kathmanduensis have been merged.

Sorry, I am unable to help…
This group needs more studies with living material and comparisons with herbarium material.

.

I. discolor / I. kathmanduensis:
According to the recently published book “Wild balsam of Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalaya- A Pictorial Handbook” by Raji Gogoi et all, I feel we should to segregate these two species as separate ID .

May I request to point out which one is I.discolor from our observations at Impatiens kathmanduensis and what is the difference between the two, to segregate for.

Better to take Gogoi ji’s suggestion in segregation.

I have seen your mail, will reply later as quite busy these days….

Impatiens for ID: 4 images.
A friend sent these images of an Impatiens sp. from Phulchowki, Nepal. It is wild growing at about 2600m in a shaded area. Photos were taken last week. (20.8.23)

To me appears close to images at
https://efloraofindia.com/2017/08/31/impatiens-kathmanduensis/
But I am not sure.
Pl. check.

Thank you for checking. I think the attached photos appear very similar to Impatiens katmanduensis from the eflora site.
