Native to South America, Garlic Vine is one of the most rewarding, flowering vines that you can grow.
Interestingly enough it smells like garlic. However, it doesn’t smell if the plant is left alone, only when the leaves are crushed.
It can either be described as a shrub or a vine since it produces numerous woody vines from the root that grow only 2-3 m tall and form a shrub-like appearance.
Its compact habitat and pretty continuos flowers make it a popular ornamental plant in gardens in the tropics.
It produces bright green leaves up to 15 cm long.
Flowering twice a year you will find it quite often covered with flowers. Flowers start off purple with white throat and change to a lighter shade of lavender with age. Eventually fading to almost white. You will see 3 different color of flowers at the same time on the plant. It can be grown in containers and should be trimmed after the flowers are gone.

Scientific name of Rashun lata : 3 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (1)

I would appreciate knowing the name of a flowering creeper with lilac coloured flowers which is quite common. In Bengal it is called Rashun Lata (garlic creeper) as its leaves, when squashed, smells of garlic.

I am attaching an image (not taken by me) to help its identification in English.

If leaves have garlic smell, it should be Mansoa alliacea.

It is very often confused with Bignonia aequinoctialis L (syn: Cydista aequinoctialis (L.) Miers), which does not have garlic smell. You will get confused if you seek answer from the internet, because some websites will even cite them as synonyms, although they are different.
1.  Fruit valves costate, acuminate, plant with garlic odor when bruised or broken; inflorescence racemose on small lateral branchlets calyx-limb flaring, corolla lavender .  . . Mansoa
1. Fruit valves not notably costate, odor when broken not alliaceous. Inflorescence a twice or more trichotomous cymose panicle, leaflet bases rounded or broadly cuneate, pseudostipules inconspicuous or early caducous, tendril often present and conspicuous; calyx-limb not notably flaring; corolla limb whitish to pink or lavender.. . Cydista

Thank you most sincerely, …, for your very prompt and helpful response. I have spent a lot of time trying to pry out the correct information from the internet. You are right – it was indeed very confusing. So, thank you again.

To me it is Cydista aequinoctialis (GARLIC VINE).The leaves on crushing gives smell of GARLIC. Hence the common name is GARLIC VINE.

Thanks … for the id. You are right, common name is Garlic Vine. Leaves when crushed give the smell of Garlic.I was confused as … link of the same flowers taken at the same place shows id as Adenocalymma nitidum. https://www.flickr.com/photos/shubhada_nikharge/

Is there any other species of Pachyptera with light blue flowers?

Is this the new name for Garlic Vine?

Top tropical considers Mansoa alliacea, Pachyptera hymenaea, Pseudocalymma alliacea, Cydista aequinoctialis as same although they are different.
There is no post on Mansoa hymenaea (DC.) A.H.Gentry in efi except this old post.
I think it should be Mansoa alliacea (Lam.) A.H.Gentry with which its images match

Cydista aequinoctialis (Mansoa hymenaea) of Bignoniaceae

Cydista aequinoctialis also commonly known as garlic vine

i am a bit confused. CYDISTA AEQUINOCTIALIS has an older synonym Adenocalymma alliaceum also ?????
i know garlic vine only by this name i try to keep myself updated for the new names but i think i missed to follow this up….

They are not synonymous according to both KEW Plant list and GRIN
Cydista aequinoctialis (L.) Miers is synonym of Bignonia aequinoctialis L. <http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-319795>
(according to GRIN Cydista aequinoctialis is the correct name)
Adenocalymma alliaceum (Lam.) Miers <http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-319319> is a synonym of Mansoa alliacea (Lam.) A.H.Gentry
The two look similar and it would be interesting to find differences between them

Perhaps the above plant is Mansoa alliacea (or else Mansoa hymenaea) of it smells of garlic
It is not Cydista aequinoctialis, which lacks garlic smell
Perhaps the whole internet considers them as synonyms but not the taxonomic world (incl GRIN and KEW Plant List) which knows their differences. After a lot of seach I found answer here:
http://zmypulse.info/2011/sctb-0081-wpow/
The answer is found in Flora of Micronesia, 5: Bignoniaceae-Rubiaceae F . Raymond Fosberg, Marie-Helene Sachet and Royce L . O i e lvr SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION PRESS, Washington,D.C. 1993
The two genera can be differentiated as under

     1.  Fruit valves costate, acuminate, plant with garlic odor when bruised or broken; inflorescence racemose on small lateral branchlets calyx-limb flaring, corolla lavender . . . . . . . . Mansoa

     1. Fruit valves not notably costate, odor when broken not alliaceous.  Inflorescence a twice or more trichotomous cymose panicle, leaflet bases rounded or broadly cuneate, pseudostipules inconspicuous or early caducous, tendril often present and conspicuous; calyx-limb not notably flaring; corolla limb whitish to pink or lavender . . . . . . . . . Cydista
There are, however, at least two vines known as garlic vine: Mansoa hymenaea (DC.) A. H. Gentry and Mansoa alliacea (Lamk) A H Gentry. The two are also confused with each other. Perhaps some one can find above plant is ultimately Mansoa alliacea or Mansoa hymenaea. For that a key is needed.

Pls check Adenocalymna alliaceum Miers.

could it be Adelocalymna nitidum Mart.ex DC.

Pseudocalymma alliaceum. a popular garden creeper.

Yes that should be consensus Pseudocalymma alliaceum (Lam.) Sandwith, Adenocalymma alliaceum (Lam.) Miers, but now correctly known as Mansoa alliacea (Lam.) A.H.Gentry

However, we have still to exclude Mansoa hymenaea (another garlic smell climber). The two are very similar and some one has to hunt out a key separating these two species to put stamp on identification. This I had written earlier also.

Yes Sir Manosa alliacea

I have seen this plant being referred to as Cydista aequinoctialis.
Was that an old invalid synonym? Could somebody help clarify the situation.

Mansoa alliacea (Lam.) A.H.Gentry is an accepted<http://www.theplantlist.org/about/#accepted> name
for this plant now as per theplantlist.org
Cydista aequinoctialis (L.) Miers is a synonym<http://www.theplantlist.org/about/#synonym>
of Bignonia aequinoctialis L and a different plant but
Yes ..  there is a confusion pls see
http://www.flickr.com/photos/13514533@N02/page3/

How do you distinguish Mansoa alliacea from Cydista aequinoctialis or Bignonia aequinoctialis if they are indeed two different plants.

These two plants have been discussed in detail in an earlier thread. Please see my responses to get clear. https://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/…

The presence of garlic smell in Mansoa and its absence in Cydista is crucial difference in practice.
I reproduce the key from that thread for your benefit
 1.  Fruit valves costate, acuminate, plant with garlic odor when bruised or broken; inflorescence racemose on small lateral branchlets calyx-limb flaring, corolla lavender . .. Mansoa

     1.
