Ipomea chinensis 2 – indiantreepix | Google Groups : 2 images. There is no species called Ipomea chinensis. There is one Ipomea sinensis. It has small flowers with distinctly heart-shaped sepals. Ipomoea sinensis (I. calycina) has very small — ALL WHITE — flower compared to what is here.
I. sinensis is just about 1 cm; and is smaller than I. triloba which may be about 1.5 – 2 cm.
Spoke to Dr.Almeida. Ipomea sinensis is a synonym of Ipomea chinensis, but he generally refers to it as I.chinensis. chinensis and sinensis are orthographic variants, but chinensis never seems to have been published. Thanks, … On checking comparative images at Ipomoea, another close call can be Ipomoea sagittifolia Burm. f. (where I find the leaves are quite variable). Thanks …, but not Ipomoea sagittifolia (popular syn. Ipomoea sepiaria) … quite familiar with, and commonly found in my vicinity. Neither Ipomoea staphylina (inflorescence many flowered) and not Ipomoea sagittifolia (purple spotted leaf center, many flowered inflorescence on long peduncle and flower tube and throat narrow).
This again looks like Ipomoea piurensis. Thanks very very much … for suggesting Ipomoea piurensis as the ID.

Requesting to please ID this Convolvulaceae member captured in MNPark, Mumbai in August 2014. Ipomoea obscura
Is this I. obscura. All images of I. obscura in efi are light yellow in colour. Requesting confirmation of ID. This species I am obsessed with , till it gets its place in Convolvulaceae of India. It is not Ipomoea obscura and It is not Ipomoea marginata with which it was clubbed in EFI page. I was looking everywhere for a clue as to what it could be, and I chanced upon a paper from Brazil, and it had listed this same flower picture with name Ipomoea piurensis o’donnell. Then I tried to find out literature on-line and I found, characteristics described do match. For last four years this flower was being posted in Indian Flora and was going unidentified. Last season I uploaded pictured right from seedling to seeds stage with name Ipomoea piurensis, asking expert opinion and refute or validation. Some opinion exchange took place with … Later I happily found out this flower being given a separate entry under Ipomoea in EFI .
I too am convinced about the Ipomoea piurensis ID for the posted plant.

Collected from roadside bushes just outside Surat City, Gujarat
on the morning of 02 10 2019, first flowers of this season.
This year it flowered late. it is an annual vine, spreads along ground, climbs nearby vegetation, fences, may be upto 4-5 meters.
Seedlings appear after first rains, and vine dies by end of November.
It has been reported from MH and other states of South India.
Stem is red, has shallow longitudinal grooves and is Tuberculated.
Leaf is never lobed, has red veins. Calyx small, about 6mm, outer two tuberculated. Non hairy.
Petiole longer, peduncle to inflorescence shorter, emerging from leaf axil.
Inflorescence a short cyme of usually 3 buds, not all reach flowering stage.
Flowers open up in morning, wither by noon.
Capsule usually about 1 cm dia, spherical or short spindle, style persistent, spiny. 3mm, dehiscent by multiple longitudinal splits.
Calyx persists, not appressed,
Testa covered in long soft wavy white hairs.

Sort peduncle, long petiole, few flowered short cyme (maximum 4 I have seen).
Limb diameter 3.5 cm, corolla length 3 cm. Note the color too.

Do we label our pics of Ipomoea piurensis as Ipomoea acanthocarpa ?
In context of closeness of Ipomoea laxiflora to Ipomoea triloba … there is another close one – Ipomoea dichroa Choisy Ipomoea piurensis and Ipomoea acanthocarpa are almost synonymous …… almost…. because my online search for this species came up with both names, former in Brazil, latter in Africa. I. acanthocarpa has been used as synonym to I. obscura. Unless someone revises the Genus and decides to keep one as name, other as synonym, it will be difficult to decide for me.
(Revision of Ipomoea is due now, two new species have been reported from South India, TN I think …..in Indian Flora).

I have difficulty accepting Ipomoea laxiflora……. it is Ipomoea triloba. I do not find much reference for Ipomoea laxiflora, only a single paper from Uttarakhand.

Ipomoea dichroa, previously Ipomoea arachnosperma has slightly bigger mauve flower, leaf is always cordate, unlobed …..and very hairy ….long stiff hairs all over the vine ……umcommon in Surat. Both of you are exactly on target.

I feel may be only after identification by Rakesh ji, attention of botanical fraternity has been drawn for this new record for publication. Also see Rakesh ji’s detailed posting at Ipomoea acanthocarpa I’m only the proverbial squirrel helping out Shreeram constructing the bridge to Lanka. Accomplishing not really much but keep doing my bit! In ’14 I recorded it first in Surat, reported in Indian Flora, and since then saw it being reported from elsewhere too!
Much later saw it being labeled as Ipomoe marginata (now Ipomoea sagittifolia) which I thought as grave injustice to a beautiful species .
Every year I kept repeating it in IndianFlora. In ’18 I had got hold of ID, was not sure of it and posted it again in Indian Flora with comparison photos of Ipomoea marginata. Differences are very clear cut. It is at that point I pulled Dinesh sir in the discussions.
I am happy, mystery is over finally. Ron Kushner was sceptical of this species and ID, ……..I pointed out its inclusion in the document Ipomoea in Bolivia after Garg sir pointed out this great piece of evidence to us ………now he has relented and accepted. All well that ends well !!! Thanks, Rakesh ji, for your persistence, which may have finally lead to its publication. I too think so, but it doesn’t matter …….. what matters is its place in Ipomoea in India. Interestingly for many years Ipomoea acanthocarpa (Choisy) Asch. & Schweinf. has been recorded as synonym of I. obscura (L.) Ker.-Gawl. which has been well reported from India, but now all major databases treat them distinct. It would be interesting to know differences between them.

With the current discussion going on about this Species, I am posting my pictures. Taken in the first week of November in 2014, at MNP. These were identified earlier by … as Ipomoea obscura.

Same. 100 %. Leaves are cordate, acute tipped.
It has been treated as Ipomoea obscura mistakenly, you can find online. But it is different from I .obscura in leaf….. red veins, basal notch very wide, corolla entirely different in limb, tube, midpetaline bands, calyx larger and outers reticulated, stem tuberculated, capsule bigger, seeds hairy, lifespan short annual.
Interesting part is, there is an African species similar to and treated as I .obscura with longer elongated linear hairy calyx lobes, very very dissimilar to Asian species. Ron himself advocates in putting lot of emphasis in calyx and I follow it too ……in this case he chose to abide by some 50+ years old flora.
Any way, in a reply to a facebook post he has accepted Ipomoea acanthocarpa as ID to the flower in posts your and mine.
