Yes, It is D. malabarica (Syn: Diospyros peregrina) of Ebenaceae family. Have only one tree of this on my property. It was planted in 1997 but unfortunately has not yet flowered / fruited. Help for ID.: Found this tree fairly tall 20+mtrs growing along the Cauvery river. The fruits look sort of rusty in appearance. I would be much obliged if some one can identify this tree for me.

The spreading branches and the young leaves are the characteristic feature of this plant, without any flowers. Looks like Diospyrous sp. Species of Diospyros (note the spelling) to me as well. I think Diospyros malabarica I could id this as Diospyros. Guessing species from the pictures provided is difficult as characters for both the images showed following characters The leaves were very smooth to touch (similar to when we touch the young leaves of Polyalthia). pls check it the character of Botanical name Diospyros malabarica (Desr) Kostel. Valmiki mentioned TINDUKA tree in his Ramayan. In English it is Gaub Persimmon. In my childhood I have eatten ripe fruit of this tree. Sweet but not very tasty. Pulped fruit of this tree is used as preservative for fishing nets (ofcoure before the invesion of polymers).
The scientific name of TINDUKA is Diospyros peregrina.

What is the green thing surrounding the fruit called? Does it disappear when the fruits ripen to red brown? Yes, the fruits in your photographs are unripe. The fruit will remain seated on the enlarged persistent calyx.
The mature fruit is about the size of an average plum. It is coated with a deciduous powdery substance which is very pale initially (as seen in your pictures) and eventually turning rufous. When this rusty mealiness comes off, the ripe fruit appears yellow.

Diospyros species for sure. The leaves (foliage) is / are not clear in your photographs. It is better if you send these photographs which are essential for pinpointing the species. Nevertheless, the fruit has a resemblance to chocolate sapote fruit (D.Digyna). But cannot confirm. You need to compare all the characters of leaves fruits etc. Please do provide better pictures of foliage etc. which helps the members to ID fast. Looks like Diospyros to me too. Thanks for identification and suggestions. Species is identifid as Diospyros malabarica Plant is located in Pilikula in Dakshina Kannada Dist of Karnataka state.

I found two trees near a Buddhist temple a couple of days ago that appear to me to belong to Diospyros genus (two different species). These are perhaps cultivars. I suspect the first to be D. montana female and the second D. malabarica perhaps. I could be completely off the mark too. Please advise.

It is Diospyros species (flower character); in some temples in A.P. also Diospyros is worshipped; where it is photographed, even the sign board on the tree is not clear, its tamil name? Thanks. In Tamil it is written as “Tamala maram” the Krishna’s favourite tree. It is a tree planted in front of a temple (Purandhara temple a Vaishanavaite’s temple) in a town near Tirunelveli. Here in Mysore I consulted an expert taxonomist, who confirmed that the tree is Garcinia xanthochymus only. I also checked a review paper on Garcinia sps in Researgate and matched with G.xanthochymus. Now I am really confused !
Madam, I shall be thankful if you could post the photographs of the Diospyros planted in A.P temples. I am curious to know. I have one photo of Diospyros species (D.malabarica) Noted at South Gujarat but here we are not able for proper identification because we have no more photos. The posted tree seems to have alternate leaves so Garcinia can be ruled out. It is not Garcinia xanthochymos; because I know the plant very well; the crown is pyramidal like Polyalthea longifolia tree; it is most probably Diospyros malabarica; which is known as tumbika in tamil; one tamil fisherman showed Diospyros tree as tamala; but actually in Sanskrit it is Cinnamomum tamala (tej patta tree). In many areas people worship Diospyros chloroxylon, D.malabarica (Syn.D.peregrina) as an incarnation of Goddess Parvati (as village deity).
