This could be Diospyros peregrina of Ebenaceae family. The new name for this species is Diospyros malabarica (Desr.) Kostel
It would be good to have look at the venation of leaves in a close up.

Yes, It is D. malabarica (Syn: Diospyros peregrina) of Ebenaceae family.

Have only one tree of this on my property. It was planted in 1997 but unfortunately has not yet flowered / fruited. Sending a few photographs to highlight the leaves.

Are’t the leaves looks like Garcinia? There is a synonym for this plant as Garcinia malabarica Desr. in Lam.,
Encycl. 3: 701.1792 (ref. Sasidharan 2004)!

This is Diospyros malabarica. Please check my photographs of this in the archives of this group.

Just wanted to confirm as I also have other set of images.

Affirmative.

Diospyros malabarica from Hooghly:

Last week students of class X asked me, “Sir, do you want to take photographs of GAAB GAACHH?”

Help for ID.: Found this tree fairly tall 20+mtrs growing along the Cauvery river. The fruits look sort of rusty in appearance. I would be much obliged if some one can identify this tree for me.
From some guide books with me I think it might be Diospyros malabarica.

I think Diospyros malabarica (Desr.) Kostel. of Ebenaceae family.

Unidentified tree.
The spreading branches and the young leaves are the characteristic feature of this plant, without any flowers.

Looks like Diospyrous sp.

Species of Diospyros (note the spelling) to me as well.

I think Diospyros malabarica

I could id this as Diospyros. Guessing species from the pictures provided is difficult as characters for
species are not visible in those pictures.

both the images showed following characters
Bark turing black towards maturity, Leaves simple, alternate, oblong-lanceolate, acute apex, Leaf stalk 10-15 mm long (Seen in picture), Young leaves are reddish (Also seen in first picture).
Are leaves leathery when touched ?
Its really difficult to conform the ID with morphological characters, but the available information pointing towards Diospyros malabarica?

The leaves were very smooth to touch (similar to when we touch the young leaves of Polyalthia).

pls check it the character of Botanical name Diospyros malabarica (Desr) Kostel.

Requesting to please ID this tree captured in MNP, Mumbai in May 2014.

I think this is similar to what … has also posted today.

Diospyros malabarica (Desr.) Kostel. [Ebenaceae].

Thank you … for the ID… Are these unripe fruits? What is the green thing surrounding the fruit called? Does it disappear when the fruits ripen to red brown?

Yes, the fruits in your photographs are unripe. The fruit will remain seated on the enlarged persistent calyx.
The mature fruit is about the size of an average plum. It is coated with a deciduous powdery substance which is very pale initially (as seen in your pictures) and eventually turning rufous. When this rusty mealiness comes off, the ripe fruit appears yellow.

Thank you Sir, forgot! I have earlier post, and the greenish yellow skin of Diospyros predominated my mind.

I support … ID.The mature fruits turn yellowish green. I would like to know the ripe fruits are edible?

that’s Gaab in bangla, edible, urchins always beat us to them. must be tasty

Hort has several, one big one on the central lawn

Yes, it is GAAB, though the epicarp is sapota like the leaves are typical Diospyros malabarica.

Diospyros malabarica.

Deshi Gab, edible after ripen, green fruit sap use for fish net longevity in water. Once very common in BD, now uncommon, found in swampy area of South Bengal and somewhere have such ecosystem

…; thanks for the information. In my native village-Kumbalangi- there still remains lot of trees that fruits profusely but nobody ever tastes it. Earlier people used the young fruits for hardening the cotton fishnets. Now simply wasted.

Not at all tasty, Dada efi thread, and the gum is also used, by kids, to fix kites!

Diospyros malabarica, I think.

Diospyros species for sure. The leaves (foliage) is / are  not clear in your photographs. It is better if you send these photographs which are essential for  pinpointing the species. Nevertheless, the fruit has a resemblance to chocolate sapote fruit (D.Digyna). But cannot confirm. You need to compare all the characters of leaves fruits etc. Please do provide better pictures of foliage etc. which helps  the members to ID fast.

Yes, this tree is Diospyros malabarica.

D. melanoxylon has thinner leaves and not this much dark green.

Manilkara ???

Pl. check with images at Manilkara zapota

Most of the Manilkara fruits look alike.

As such difficult to decide. By the way is there any Manilkara which is not edible ?

I think zapota is edible.

Any variety which not edible ?

Diospyros, Ebenaceae

I am afraid it is not correct !

It is Diospyros – the calyx, fruit, leaf strongly indicates it to be Diospyros only

It is Diospyros sp. only.

I guess it could be an introduced sp. in Nepal as no matching is found and it was planted in the office garden of Chitawan National Park.
Never seen Diospyros fruit like Manilkara.

Pl. check

Not able to establish a match !

Closest I can go as per comparative images is Diospyros discolor Willd., but not sure of this id.

Please ID the tree species in front of a temple in Tamilnadu. It is worshipped. Looks like a species of Garcenia. Could it be ?

Furnish some more information, …

Sorry … These pictures have been sent by someone from Tamil Nadu.  He has no other photographs.

It is Diospyros species (flower character); in some temples in A.P. also Diospyros is worshipped; where it is photographed, even the sign board on the tree is not clear, its tamil name?

Thanks. In Tamil it is written as “Tamala maram” the Krishna’s favourite tree. It is a tree planted in front of a temple (Purandhara temple a Vaishanavaite’s temple) in a town near Tirunelveli. Here in Mysore I consulted an expert taxonomist, who confirmed that the tree is Garcinia xanthochymus only. I also checked a review paper on  Garcinia sps in Researgate and matched with G.xanthochymus. Now I am really confused !
Madam, I shall be thankful if you could post the photographs of the Diospyros planted in A.P temples. I am curious to know.

I have one photo of Diospyros species (D.malabarica) Noted at South Gujarat but here we are not able for proper identification because we have no more photos.
Attachments (1) – 3 mb.

The posted tree seems to have alternate leaves so Garcinia can be ruled out.

It is not Garcinia xanthochymos; because I know the plant very well; the crown is pyramidal like Polyalthea longifolia tree; it is most probably Diospyros malabarica; which is known as tumbika in tamil; one tamil fisherman showed Diospyros tree as tamala; but actually in Sanskrit it is Cinnamomum tamala (tej patta tree). In many areas people worship Diospyros chloroxylon, D.malabarica (Syn.D.peregrina) as an incarnation of Goddess Parvati (as village deity). The first image clear, the flower is of typical Diospyros

This is how trees are worshipped;

I am forwarding herewith a few photographs for ID. Photos taken at Theosophical society campus, Chennai. Please Id the tree.

Goniothalamus salicinus ???

It reminds me of Diospyros malabarica

Looks different from specimen at

Diospyros malabarica only.
