As per efi thread:
I find that this species should be Euphorbia hypericifolia L., where the leaves are longer than in E. indica. Further the limbs of glands are pinkish white and the cyathia clusters are subtended by smaller leaves, which is not found in E. indica.
In Euphorbia hypericifolia, the leaves are longer, lanceolate and narrowed towards apex. In E. indica the leaves are oblong and shorter;
.
In E. hypericifolia the leaves are narrowed towards upper portion and the stems are erect and unbranched, whereas in E. indica, the stems are decumbent and branched from base;

Is the plant in pic unknown2 the same as unknown and unknown1? leaves look similar but color of stem in unknown2 is red

I think the first two pictures and last (3rd) picture belongs to different species?

The plant one in the last picture is Phyllanthus sp.
Do you have a picture of the first plant in which the tip of the branch in focus?

I know we have to post different sp in different threads but the plant in the last picture looked similar to the other plant and I wanted to be sure that it is so. I went to take pic of the plant that I last photographed but unfortunately somebody had trampled upon but I could get a close up of similar plant near it I hope it is of help

I think this belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae.

I have tried to get pics again but this is of a nearby plant to the existing. Someone very unkindly has uprooted the plant in the pot along with this plant and has stolen the pot. It is terrible what people do I hope it helps looks quite similar to the link you have kindly provided. But I have so little knowledge. This does not show berry like fruits yet

Now, with these clearer pictures, I think this could be Euphorbia hypericifolia (Syn: Chamaesyce hypericifolia) of Euphorbiaceae family.
.., please validate the same.

… oh yes, … Euphorbia hypericifolia (syn: Chamaesyce hypericifolia) referring to the new set of images … a1.jpg AND 190920111752.jpg

After reading on the net after identification I have found that it has a lot of medicinal properties. The info found is in Marathi we say “Dokya varun jaat ahe”. But for Botanists and experts like you it will be interesting.

ID request – 24092011PC2:
Please identify this Euphorbia species found growing wild in Delhi.
It looks like E.hirta but is much taller, growing almost to a height of 2 feet and has cyathium bracts that are white in young unpollinated flower, turning  pink after pollination. Looks as if the male flowers mature first (dehised anthers seen in the young cyathium) unlike in E.hirta where the female flowers appear to mature first.

Chamaesyce hypericifolia may be

With the experience of Euphorbiaceae fortnight it appear as Euphorbia indica. However, validation from experts needed.

Yes this is Euphorbia indica.

Yes, this is Euphorbia hypericifolia L. [Synonym: Chamaesyce hypericifolia (L.) Millsp.]

Yes it is Euphorbia hypericifolia L. Chamaesyce hypericifolia (L.) Millsp. is its synonym, if you treat Euphorbia sensu lato. If you prefer to segregate Chamaesyce into a separate genus then Chamaesyce hypericifolia should be the correct name.

Euphorbia hypericifolia?

In my opinion this should be

This seems to be Euphorbia hypericifolia L., The leaves are longer, lanceolate and narrowed towards apex. In E. indica the leaves are oblong and shorter.

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Euphorbia%20erythrocladaDSCN4647s-9.jpg
This species was earlier IDed as possibly Euphorbia erythroclada.
Will get some comments from the new experts

This seems to be Euphorbia indica Lam. with cyathia clustered in axillary peduncles. In E. erythroclada, the cyathia are solitary of paired in axils, never in clusters as here. The leaves are pale greenish silvery white beneath in E. erythroclada, but the lower surface of leaves are not visible in the photo.

After seeing the currently uploaded photos, I find that this species should be Euphorbia hypericifolia L., where the leaves are longer than in E. indica. Further the limbs of glands are pinkish white and the cyathia clusters are subtended by smaller leaves, which is not found in E. indica.

This is a tiny herb.
Must be very common. Got a chance to see its flowers. Actually the intricate nature of the flowers was appreciated on zooming the macro. Is it Chamaesyce hypericifolia. I could find … photo on Flickr matching this one.

This is herb with erect stem, leaves opposite and with stipules.
Involucres on axillary pedunculate cymes. I have identified this as Euphorbia zornioides. Pls validate.

…, could it be Chamaesyce hypericifolia (C. glomerifera, Euphorbia glomerifera, E. hypericifolia).
But not sure of difference between C. hypericifolia and Euphorbia zornioides …

Euphorbia hirta ?

I think Euphorbia microphylla ?

yes this is “Euphorbia hirta ?”

i am with …

check it out with Euphorbia erythroclada iscmumbai.maharashtra

fanatastic work

Thanks …
It definitely closely matches with the reference page picture.
To tell the details of characters of my specimen apart from seen in the picture……….
The leaves and plant in general not hairy as in E.hirsuta. Leaves 2cm bye 0.5 cm or so in opposite pairs, finely serrate. Capsule reddish 3 lobed. The plant was growing as a weed in garden.
The description matches fairly well with that in BSI Mah flora.

yes …
the stem was not hairy at all, so was not conveinced of it being E. hirta. Euphorbia erythroclada i collected from the bank of Dahisar river.
Sorrry i dnt provide the description and information along with the link

Forwarding again for comparison to recent … post

Yes this is Euphorbia hypericifolia and Chamaesyce hypericifolia is a synonym now, according to the plant list.

A reply from another thread:

I find that there are two IDs both given by … … hope this is not a mix up.

To remove the contradiction in the identifications, I once again reiterate that my identification that this species is Euphorbia hypericifolia (syn.: Chamaesyce hypericifolia) is the correct identification. The earlier identification that it is E. indica is not correct.

This seems to be Euphorbia hypericifolia L., but the leaves are not disinctly narrowed towards apex and the limbs of glands are larger. Needs critical study before confirming.

Euphorbia species from Chakrata for ID-GSJUL09 : 3 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (4).
Uploading herbaceous species of Euphorbia for ID from Chakrata. The species seems to be agreeing with E. hypercifolia in leaves, glabrous capsules and branches and type of inflorescence but lacking petaloid appendages of glands. Please help in ID.

This is Euphorbia hypericifolia L., called Dudhi in Hindi.
The distinctive features are reddish or tan colour of the internodes, deltoid stipules, leaves obliquely rounded at base and completely serrulate along margins; cyathia clustered at tips of long peduncles with 2 or 3 subtending small leaves.
It is common in low hills of W. Himalaya and Peninsular India.

Thanks a lot …, Meaning that petaloid appendages are not that significant in this species.

Request for identification of plant

Family: Euphorbiaceae
Habit: Herb
Location: Thane, Maharashtra
Date: 15th June 2015

Euphorbia indica to me.

This plant is E. hypericifolia L., common in Peninsular India.

The plant is Euphorbia nutans.

If it is Euphorbia nutans, then a new record for India.
… identified the images to be Euphorbia hypericifolia.

Yes, once … identified, it should be taken as final ID. He is the expert of Euphorbiaceae and written complete account of the family for India. I also correct here my earlier ID as per the suggestion by …

As a member of the group I suggested the ID based on the resemblance of the photograph. Certainly not to  counter any body. It is up to the experts to accept or reject it. Purpose is to get the correct ID. Nothing wrong in rechecking the characters by taxonomic experts.

Yes. There is a possibility that it may be E. nutans Lag. However, this species has not been recorded from India so far. It is native of America, and also found in Europe and Egypt. Recently it has been recorded from Iran, which is so far its easternmost location.
E. hypericifolia and E. nutans are closely similar and are very difficult to distinguish. Perhaps the two should be combined into one species, when E. hypericifolia has priority and should be its correct name. In many floras these two species are confused. The distinguishing characters are not clear-cut. Therefore there is need to study them in detail and find out how they differ before drawing into conclusions.
I am attaching two photographs taken from some websites. This is only to show you how similar the two species are.
Attachments (2)

Thank you … for the identification and an insight on both the species E. hypericifolia and E. nutans

The suggestion of … prompted … to arrive at such a conclusion and nobody thought of this possbillity so far.  Now that attention is drawn on Euphorbia nutans, I am sure it is a matter of time only when the status of the species, i.e. E. nutans will be clarified.  As suggested by …, there is a need for detailed studies.  E. hypericifolia, E. hyssopifolia and E. indica are all closely related species having narrow differences. Hence further critical studies on the complex are desirable.

Thank you Sir for the kind words.. The need for further studies amongst the similar looking sps. is necessary for more clarifying results.

Interesting. so …, you have your work cut out for you if you are a botanist you know what to do. if not, collaborate with some taxonomist in nearby university and you may have a paper in it for you and your collaborator. Good case

Thank you Ma’am.. Will look into more detail of the plant..  Btw.. I am latter (an amateur)

This is definitely not E. hirta, which characteristically have horizontally spreading yellow hairs on stems, petioles and leaves.
I am not able to identify it. It is probably an introduced species. I will try to identify it as early as possible.

Okay Sir, I will also try.

So should I take it as Euphorbia hirta? Please advice

… already mentioned that it is not Euphorbia hirta and it may be an introduced species. The way out is to download the images and compare them with the book, Genus Euphorbia in India. If it is not found there then the alliance can be indicated. Let us try for the possible identity. Will return back to you soon.

It is near Euphorbia pycnostegia but the upper leaves are not imbricating and concealing the cyathia

The plant photographed is Euphorbia hypericifolia L., common in many states of Peninsular India, particularly in moist localities..

Thank you … and thank you …  I think the plant has completely disappeared from my village, as buildings have increased and open fields have dwindled alarmingly. The price you pay for rapid urbanisation! In Kerala, I am afraid, there is not much left to be called “rural.”

Euphorbia prostrata Aiton (accepted name) ?? : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (1)
Location: Bali, Indonesia
Altitude: 60 ft.Date: 11 June 2014

Is ID correct ?

Image is much closer to Euphorbia hypericifolia and E. indica. I disagree with E. prostrata.

I guess Euphorbia hypericifolia is the correct ID.

I find it more closer to Euphorbia indica

That too. Close species.

Euphorbia indica is not listed in Indonesia according to POWO and CoL and I feel image looks slight different compared to net images and POWO herbarium image.

E.prostata and E.hypericifolia also shown no distribution in Indonesias.

The photograph suggests the plant is neither E. prostrata nor E. indica. The leaves are larger and longer than wide unlike oblong to orbicular leaves in E. prostrata. The plant is glabrous and hence not E. indica, which has leaves and stems covered with white hairs. It is probably some other species belonging to the subgenus Chamaesyce.  This subgenus is predominantly American and hence, I suggest you contact some American herbaria for confirmation. Maybe it is an introduction from New World.

Names of Chamaesyce species are showing as synonym of Euphorbia species. Is it correct ?

its a subgenus as … just said

for simplest description see Wikipedia page
for more scientific and deeper issues
and Yang & al. • Phylogenetics and classification of Euphorbia subg. Chamaesyce
TAXON  61 (4) • August 2012: 764–789

Almost certainly E. hypericifolia. It has established itself worldwide and should be the only species in Indonesia with this morphology.  A clearer photo would help a lot as the stipules aren’t easily visible.

Key in the Flora of China leads me to Euphorbia bifida

I too tried the key in Flora of China and that comfortably took me to Euphorbia bifida. The only character that was not sure about was that whether the capsule glabrous or pubescent. The capsule in the picture seem to be immature. When I tried with the capsule pubescent, it took me to one known species (E. hirta) and the other species (E. indica) has strikingly different character (stem uniformly white puberulent).
Hence I too think that this would be Euphorbia bifida.

Thanks … and … for the efforts taken.
I think you have searched and extracted maximum possible characters with available pictures. Further Id depends upon getting a specimen again and confirming all the characters physically. Very interesting discussion indeed.

Euphorbia bifida is not found in India as per Flora of India Vol. 23. May be … can sort it out.

Euphorbia hypericifolia. Note the large stipules spreading away from the stems.

I don’t know about the occurrence of E. bifida in India, but I do know that E. bifida is hairy and this is quite glabrous. Also, the leaves of E. bifida should be narrower.  Someone also suggested E. maculata, which is also hairy.

This appears to be Euphorbia hypericifolia L, native to America, introduced into India and now found naturalised in most wastelands and gardens.

Please identify this plant at Nigadi, Pune, Maharashtra

Please check Euphorbia indica

Euphorbia hypericifolia probably

we need better classification system.
writings like this that follows adds to confusion…. to say the least
In Euphorbia hypericifolia, the leaves are longer, lanceolate and narrowed towards apex. In E. indica the leaves are oblong and shorter;
In E. hypericifolia the leaves are narrowed towards upper portion and the stems are erect and unbranched, whereas in E. indica, the stems are decumbent and branched from base;

Euphorbia hypericifolia is very much branched, can reach up to 3 to 4 feet height if left undisturbed.
In another thread E.hypericifolia glabrous vs E.indica hairy is better distinction.
Smaller plants and normal variation of leaf shape lead to lot of confusion.

Surajit-24Aug22- Euphorbia hyssopifolia L. ?: 2 high res. images.
Noticed today this roadside herb, near Dankuni, Hooghly.
It’s about two feet tall.
Photographs captured and sent from my phone.
I will send pictures one at a time.
I’d help would be appreciated.

Yes sir it is Euphorbia hypericifolia

If I am not mistaken _

1. Inflorescence of cyathia are subtended by small floral leaves (though stem is both red and green, or seemingly faint straw coloured)
2. srtipule less than 1 mm
3. capsule around 2 mm
Shouldn’t this be E. hyssopifolia L., as per efi discussion and the KEY in FoC?
7 images.

I will go for Euphorbia hypericifolia, as per images and details herein and as per keys in BSI Flora of India.

Thanks Sir, I accept.
