sharing snap of the Yellow variety of Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia var. flavida )…commonly called Gulmohar.
Although it is endemic to Madagascar….it is widely grown in India as an avenue tree.

We call it Radha-choora in Bengali….as the red Gulmohar is called Krishna-choora.

This looks more like Caesalpinia pulcherrima var. flava, rather than Delonix. Shots of the entire plant would be helpful.

Delonix regia var. flavida – efloraofindia | Google Groups

I even thought of Caesalpinia pulcherrima var. flava even before looking at the reply of Kenneth. Delonix is a tall tree, whereas caesalpinia is mostly a shrub or small tree.

Caesalpinia pulcherrima for me too

Okay…thanks for the correct ID of the flower…  but the yellow Delonix and Caesalpinia look very similar….isnt it??

This appears to be Yellow Peacock Flower from Gulmohar family. (pl check Caesalpinia pulcherrima)

Last month you had raised question about differences between Caesalpinia pulcherrima var. flava and Delonix regia var. flavida. Today I had a casual check and found these:
Sepals in Delonix are narrower and valvate in bud, in Caesalpinia they are broader and imbricate
Stamens slightly longer than petals in Delonix, they are 2-3 times longer in Caesalpinia

Fruits 30-50 cm long in Delonix, less than 10 cm in Caesalpinia

Thank you … but I think it may be … who raised the doubt because it was surely not me.

I think it was

My layman’s understanding is that Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a bush and can be yellow (Radha chuda) and red (Krishna chuda) whereas delonix regia can be pink bright pink or yellow and it is a tree. Caesalpinia’s identifying characteristic is its very long stamens.

In Bengal gulmohur is also known as Krishna chuda.

Any corrections welcome.

Plant posted by … concluded as NOT Delonix regia var. flavida Stehle (syn. of Delonix regia (Hook.) Raf.)
Would like to resolve the ID of all yellow flowered variety OR form of Caesalpinia pulcherrima posted by …
It could be any of the following two:
  1. Caesalpinia pulcherrima var. flava Bailey & Rehder … synonym of Caesalpinia pulcherrima (L.) Sw.
  2. Caesalpinia pulcherrima f. flava (Degener) H. St. John

On 1/6/08 at Butterfly Park, Hyderabad, AP.
Here are some extracts from Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesalpinia_pulcherrima
In the genus Caesalpinia the most popularly planted species is Caesalpinia pulcherrima. Common names for this species include Poinciana, Peacock Flower, Red Bird of Paradise, Mexican Bird of Paradise, Dwarf Poinciana, Pride of Barbados, and flamboyan-de-jardin. It is a shrub growing to 3 m tall, native to tropical America. The leaves are bipinnate, 20-40 cm long, bearing 3-10 pairs of pinnae, each with 6-10 pairs of leaflets 15-25 mm long and 10-15 mm broad. The flowers are borne in racemes up to 20 cm long, each flower with five yellow, orange or red petals. The fruit is a pod 6-12 cm long.
It is a striking ornamental plant, widely grown in tropical gardens. It is also the national flower of the Caribbean island of Barbados, and is depicted on the Queen’s personal Barbadian flag.
In India it is found in the tropical rain forests. With a beautiful inflorescence in yellow, red and orange, it is called “Ratnagundhi” colloquially.

Medicine men in the Amazon Rainforest have long known some of the medicinal uses for Caesalpinia pulcherrima, which is known as ayoowiri. The juice from the leaves is said to cure fever, the juice from the flower cures sores, and the seeds cure bad cough, breathing difficulty, and chest pain. Four grams from the root is also said to induce abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy

The Marathi name is shankhasur, why? i don’t know!

But, this plant is exotic. orignated from West Indies…isn’t it?

In Hindi the red flowered bush is known as Krishna chuda and the yellow one Radha Chuda.

In Hindustani, these are known as Krishna Chura n Radha Chura.

Pl. go through efi site pages at Caesalpinia pulcherrima & Caesalpinia pulcherrima f. flava

At the most, you can talk of them as different forms.

i did not realize that … this is peacock flower is also known as krishnachura and radha chura. i thought krishnachura is delonix regia… in its red/scarlet// or yellow flower varieties and radhachura is one of the peltophorums … esp copper pod variety.

well, live and learn i guess. or there is a mix up in colloquial names used by mali and vendors.

Third color variant ?? Please show.

I have heard about a Green variant, not seen yet.

I don’t have pictures. seen in botanical garden in Miami in the 80s. white and yellow varieties, and red… our krishnacuraie Delonix regia was very common in southern florida nurseries then.  fallen out of favor it seems because hurricanes uproot them…

just like they do it here in southern 24 paraganas in west Bengal….
