Shrub 6 for identification:
This shrub was clicked
at Chennai, South India by the road side. There were only 2 plants in the area, just at this one spot. One plant had dried up flowers and fruits while the other had fresh flowers. The butterflies were more attracted to the plant with dried flowers. The butterflies seen were the blue tiger, plain tiger, stripped tiger, common crow. Yes sir this plant attracts butterflies.
……………………………..

Crotalaria sp. of Leguminosae family. In Malayalam (in Tamil as well, I guess) it is called Kilukkachedy. The dry fruit while shaking makes nice sound (we use to play around when I was a child). The flowers are not visible hence I may not be able to confirm the id.

Crotalaria ¿ spectabilis / else ? … (family: Fabaceae)

efi page on Crotalaria spectabilis

This is tricky. I think this is not Crotalaria spectabilis Roth, because of absence of any visible stipules or bracts which are persistent in the species.
It can be Crotalaria retusa L., even though majority leaves are not retuse, where stipules are minute and bracts are deciduous. But, I am not sure.

This is Crotalaria retusa.

This one does not look like C. spectablis.

C retusa

If anyone has confirmed pictures of Crotalaria spectabilis please could you post them?
There is so often confusion between C. retusa and C. spectabilis.  I, for one, would benefit from being able to compare the two.

I will post my pictures of Crotalaria spectabilis and retusa place-wise, date-wise …
after I finish my family uploads.
Looking forward to others’ posts too.

sir can I get botanical name ? – खिलखिला in Marathi

Could be variant of खुळखुळा … a name for some species of Crotalaria like C. retusa, C. verrucosa.
In case I come across खिलखिला, will return to this post.

खिलखिला is just a variant of खुळखुळा (rattle toy). It must be arising out of accent / dialect in some place(s).

As children, we use to with play with the dry pods and call them Chanbichiya.

Place: in premises of St Stephen’s Church, Ooty (~ 7428 ft asl), Tamilnadu
Time: November 17, 2011 at 2.18pm
Habit: medium-sized bushy shrub
Habitat: garden planted
Plant: about 6-7 ft high, many branched from base, perhaps pruned, may grow to become a large shrub
Flower: quite handsome, about (or over) an inch across … largest of Crotalaria flower seen yet.
Seedpod: about 2 – 2.5 inches long X 0.75 – 1 inch wide; this too largest of Crotalaria pod seen yet … may actually serve as a rattletoy.

Were the leaf simple? it has stipules at the base
I dont think this is Crotalaria. May be I am wrong

OH !! just went by the tell-tale looks of flower and seedpod.

I feel it as a species of Crotalaria only. Crotalaria spectabilis is a possibility as this plant shows variations in high altitudes.
But the pod looks different!
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=242315584

it does look like a Crotalaria spectabilis oversized in all aspects.– also wondering if it could be some introduced species of Crotalaria.

Yes, it seems to be Crotalaria spectabilis Roth (Indian Rattle Box). Please see the website: http://www.floridainvasives.org/Central/rattlebox.pdf

It could be that C. spectabilis cultivated as ornamental has variations compared to what is found in wild.

Rattlepod for Id 280911 NS1:
Attached fabaceae member is for Id. Plz identify.

Plant Habit- Small tree of abt 9-10 feet.
Habitat- Wild
Location- Mahabaleshwar
Date- 26 th Jan 11.

… my strong guess: Crotalaria spectabilis … commonly known as: cats bell, greater rattle pod, showy crotalaria, showy rattlepod • *Hindi*: ghungri, जंगली सन jangli san, jhunjhunia • *Kannada*: kaadu senabu • *Marathi*: डिंगळा dingala, खुळखुळा khulkhula

I think … is correct in guessing this plant as *Crotalaria spectabilis *of Leguminosae family.

I have a nagging doubt that the leaf shape of Crotalaria spectabilis is obovate and of this species is somehow cuneate.
Also the leaves of this species were shiny, like of rubber plant (Ficus elastica).
But may be this is due to it’s habitat.
Plz tell me is it so ?

… stressed my guess based on the pod that could be seen in one of your photos.
For kind of width to length ratio of these leaves, slight variance in the shape may show the shape as EITHER cuneate OR obovate … simply my opinion, may not be a correct thought.
Here is my sighting of of pod and leaf of C. spectabilis at Mahabaleshwar, 13 JAN 2008 for comparison … pod and leaf in your photos look quite the same.
The other question is: any other Crotalaria close to this species … … seems unlikely.
[image: Crotalaria spectabilis] <http://www.google.com/flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fdi…>

Good Close up of Fruits …. Fruits are same but i also have doubt in this being C spectabilis

Yes the pods and the leaves looks same ….
Thanks for clearing my doubt.

retuse means having a rounded apex with a central shallow notch.(see the petal). It is also called rattle pod or ‘khulkhula‘ in marathi meaning the rattle which babies play with.
pl. identify whether it is C. retusa or C. leschenaultii

It is the Greater Rattle Pod [C.leschenaultii].

L.leschenaultii is found at an altitude and its leaves have a pointed / acute tip.
L.retusa is found more in the coastal areas and its leaf tips are ‘turned inwards’.
