Habit: Small tree
Habitat: Cultivated.
Sighting: Tumkur and Bangalore (rural) Karnataka about 800 msl.
Date: 12-02-2015 and 02-03-2015 bok pholl in bangla i think. very nice It is Agast/ Ahasti in Marathi.
The flowers and fruits are used as vegetable. Grandma use to make it when I was a little girl.

is it Agasti in marathi? Any relationship, since Agati grandiflora is one of its synonyms?

i am from Odisha (Orissa earlier) only and my mother language is also Odia (Oriya earlier). So completely familiar with the nature and natural resources of the State including traditional local languages of tribal.

Attaching the image of the 98th member of the series. In this a Redvented Bulbul is on the flower of Sesbania grandiflora. This plant is known as AGASTI in Hindi and BAKPHUL in Bangla. The flowers are eaten as vegetable in Bengal.
    efloraindia: Sesbania grandiflora from Coimbatore: This not relevant to this week posting. But I had an opportunity to take photo from a home garden at Anaikatti (Sesbania grandiflora) and sharing the images of the same. (Synonyms: Agati grandiflora). One more photos of (S. grandiflora) fruit.
I had also seen pink flower of this same sp. Marathi name Agasti BOK PHOOL in Bengali… we eat it fried in besan …Bok phooler boda… with rice and dal… yummy… Yes pink tinged white and frankly pink flowers are not so rare..

In December, last year i took a couple of photos of what we call “BAK-PHOOL” in Bengali. Today i have taken photographs of the pods. But, I do not know the correct scientific name of this plant. Wikipedia describes it as Sesbania grandiflora, but a few other sites describe it as S.grandifolia (please see – http://www.eattheweeds.com/edible-flowers-part-thirteen/).
Which one is the correct ID? Species – Sesbania grandiflora / Sesbania grandifolia
Date/Time- 08/12/2011 @ 1.50 P.M. & 01/02/2012 @ 11.07 A.M.
Location- Chanditala (Hooghly District), West Bengal
Habitat- School plantation
Plant Habit- Tree
Height- 20 ft. approx.
Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- Pinnately compound
Inflorescence Type/ Size- Raceme axillary
Flowers Colour- Yellowish white
Fruits Type/ Shape/ Size Seeds- Pod linear, 15-50 seeded
Other Information like Fragrance, Pollinator, Uses etc.- In secondary classrooms we often site this flower as an example of a big size ‘complete & irregular’ flower. Flowers are eaten fried with “Besan” (gram flour).

Found this tree with flowers red in color, at a resort. Cultivated tree. Could find very few good images with red flowers on searching. I found some interesting names for this tree on searching. We also having the species in Riyadh, KSA All these years I have come across only the White flowers.

In Kachchh, the current of the wind is particularly strong in the middle of the year. Last year in June, I was spellbound under a youthful Sesbania grandiflora, a leafless tree laden with abundant fruit near Kojachora, far from the jarring din and bustle of urbanity. I could see the swell and the swirl of the wind as it gusted through the canopy and it produced a resounding rattle as it waggled and tickled the slender, tawny pods.
The flowers, being the largest in the Papilionaceae, are no trifle either but I am instantly reminded of this windswept encounter whenever I come across this tree elsewhere. what a beautiful description! Agreeing with … Many thanks … Indeed artistic – both: photo and narration. This picture is at a special angle making it look curious to me. At first glance it reminded me tall Chir pine of mid Himalaya. But the beautiful narration then revealed it as a leafless tree, full of long pods, of Sesbania grandiflora. A unique post telling a unique encounter.

This is again from Panipat, a large and old individual of Sesbania.. Please suggest if this is once more Sesbania sesban Very large and interesting plant. In context of some species of Sesbania that I have in my collection, the leaflets seem relatively large compared to size of the leaf. Considering S. sesban, the length of leaf in the posted plant seems too short with very less number of leaflets. I could be wrong. Keen to know ID; Many thanks … for sharing this plant.
