S. malaccense: pear shaped, obovoid, globose, 3-8 cm diam. greenish, white, pink striped, red, dark red-blackish. These were sold under the name Paneer Fruits in the Bangalore market. On searching, I found that these were none other than Syzygium jambos.
For validation. Yes, it looks like so. Yes, I think it is S. jambos, although a little bit different from my fruits. Yes; I endorse … Seems to be Syzygium jambos. Attaching herewith pictures of Rose Apple. Also copying some links. i love this fruit very much only available in summer in has has a lovely fragnance. I have seen a pink and long variety of this fruit in Thailand. But our fruit is more tasty. We did have the pink variety, however, we do not have it any more. The original plant (yellow) is no more but thanks to birds, it has been My photographs of Love Apple [Syzygium jambos]. They were taken at my friends farm at Kolad. I too have this plant but the fruit does not have the fragrance of Rose. It is slightly sour. I have both the white variety as well as the red one. The seeds are very much like that of The Rose apple that I know. There seems to be some confusion. If you go through the link that I had copied to my mail, you will find that Rose apple is a name given to several fruits. I guess the experts in our group will have to discuss the matter.
Its Syzygium jambos (L.) Alston
Common Name : Gulab Jamun
Family : Myrtaceae Recently we had a very short season of Rose apple in Kolkata…
Family: Myrtaceae
Syzyygium jambos Alston Synonyms: Eugenia jambos L. and Jambosa jambos Millsp. It has an interesting small, which is best perceived when one bites into the fruit… the seed rattles inside, and if one handles it roughly, the pale soft skin bruises easily and turns brown…
I brought some home, the first of the season got eaten rapidly, nobody would let me take pictures…
With the second set (next week) I could get some pictures and keep the seeds for my experiments…
Here’s the result in pictures…
There is imperceptible ridges on the outer skin.. size is variable from the same tree ( my vendor’s own) The fruit is hollow, thin wall… seeds have brown skin, usually one seed with a few embroys inside ( see later) one seed had two skin coated halves, one of which was very eager, and had started sprouting already… Many years ago I had searched for the rose apple on the net and found* Julia Morton’s* write up the most complete, on reviewing these few lines intriguing and worth repeating… I quote:
“Fruit: In 1849, it was announced in Bengal that the ripe fruits, with seeds removed, could be distilled 4 times to make a “rosewater” equal to the best obtained from rose petals.. Medicinal Uses: In India, the fruit is regarded as a tonic for the brain and liver. An infusion of the fruit acts as a diuretic. A sweetened preparation of the flowers is believed to reduce fever. The seeds are employed against diarrhea, dysentery and catarrh.” …. end quote. This whole essay can be seen at URL:
http://www.hort.purdue.edu/rose_apple.html Nicely illustrated….thanks … for showing the seeds of this, never seen so clearly. Across continents in the subject line means: : the top tree is from Northern suburbs of Los Angeles in 2010 I think, or 08… the second is from an arboretum in orange county , southern california, ( a third tree foto not included because it was an old ptint) had been from 24 paraganas in West bengal, and the fruits are from Baruipur area West Bengal, bought at the lake market satellite shop… and the seedlings are in my balcony….in West Bengal phew… seven seas, seven oceans and seven continents apart…. I might as well have been to the moon and back…
This is GOLAP JAM in Bengali and according to the “Plant Groups” (a college text book) the scientific name is Eugenia jambos. Now a wikipedia search tells me that it is also known as Syzygium jambos. A tropical fruit tree up to 10 m tall. The terminal inflorescence is showy and usually carries four whitish-green flowers on the outside of the crown. The tree has long, glossy green leaves. Flowering can occur two or three times per year. The fruits are whitish-green, rose scented, about 5 cm long and ripen over an extended period. The edible fruit is shaped like a small pear. The flesh is a bit softer than that of an apple. It tastes like a cross between apple and watermelon, with a very mild rose scent and a slightly bitter aftertaste. The plant is native to Southeast Asia but is naturalized in India, especially the state of Kerala. In ancient Sanskrit, the land now called India was referred to by the ancient Indians themselves as Jambudvipa, which means Rose-apple-land (jambu = rose apple; dvipa = land). The dry, crisp fresh fruit is used to make jellies. Fruit/seed can be produced following self-pollination. Ref. Syzygium jambos – Malabar Plum – Flowers of India Thanks a lot for sharing. It is common in Indonesia. The leaves in your 6th picture is unusual to me, they are green, not dark green. Location: Motel du Mugling, Kurintar, Nepal

Common names are Pomme rosa, Rose apple. Syzygium jambos to me too I agree that it is S. jambos because: the twigs are brown, the leaves are dark green and lanceolate. Date/Time – 16.04.2012 / 10.40 a.m. Location – Place – Kaziranga National Park
Habitat – Garden/ Urban/ Wild / Type – Wild Could be a species of Eugenia (E.jambos?).
I think this is Syzygium siamense (Craib) P.Chantaranothai & J.Parn. It is almost like S. jambos, but the tree is taller and larger, the twig is terete, the leaves are wider, and not dark green.
Could be… Let us wait till the tree bears fruit to reveal its identity. Thanks, …, for id.
But Syzygium siamense does not have any distribution in India.
Is it the flower bud or fruit ? Looks like flower bud. Pl clarify. Also check for E.jambos. I send you some pictures of S. jambos for comparison. Attachments (2) Can it be Syzygium hemisphericum (Wight) Alston as per images herein ? Can it be Syzygium cordata ? does it have distribution here ? Can it be S.cordatum ? Does it have distribution here ? Something that make me confused is the shape of the leaves. Are they lanceolate? If I am not mistaken, some days ago someone thought that it was S. jambos. If the leaves are lanceolate, and the fruits are aromatic like roses? If yes, then it is jambos. Fwd: SYMBIOSIS : 1118 : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (1)
