But the pictures on the net showed up a different fruit for Rose Apple. Please help with the name. The foliage of this looks like Syzygium malaccense to me.
The common name ‘Rose Apple’ is typically (at least in USA) applied to Syzygium jambos. This is not Rose apple. The leaves of Rose Apple are long and narrow. Anybody could get confused and call it Roseapple by looking at the picture of the flowers and the fruit in the third picture. The hand painted illustration in the FAO document showing the conical versus pyriform fruits, make me more inclined towards Syzygium aqueum. Am sure, the fruits that are sold seasonally in and around Mumbai, Thane, or even down south near and around Mangalore, are water apples.

Flora Indica describes –
1) E. aquea R. – two varieties, one with rose coloured fruits and the other is white
2) E. alba R. – white shining fruits…. very insipid and quite watery.
The fruits (yet to develop) in this species are watery indeed!
“An English Index to the Plants of India” informs JAAMROOL/JAMRUL is E. alba. The malaccensis one is MALACCA-JAMROOL.
Photos were taken on 03/04/2013, in an orchard. It will be more clear if you send the images of the fruits. To me, it is a hybrid of Syzygium aqueum and S. samarangense. There are some intermediates between both species. The flowers belong to S. aqueum but the leaves are almost similar to S. samarangense. In Indonesia, I found some cultivars of S. aqueum i.e.: 1) permanently white, 2) white then pink, 3) large pink, 4) small red, 5) large red to dark red. Eugenia alba has been transferred to S. samarangense. Syzygium malaccense has deep pink flowers.

I thought the calyx in my species is elevated – efi thread.     I have recorded another tree today. This tree (in the attached photos) might be the same as in the original plant in this thread.   These last three pictures depict Syzygium samarangense we call them JAMBU semarang. If the taste is astringent when young and sweet at maturity, then this must be S. samarangense. Your picture shows white flowers… this combination of white flowers and red jamun superficially (based on these 3 pics only) seems to be very similar to the one growing and labeled in the AGRI-Hort garden in Kolkata… that’s the source of my visual ID…

*** POINT 4) : I have some pictures of flowers of a properly identified tree labeled Syzygium samarangense at Kolkata Botanical Garden … flowers are definitely white and fruits were also white…. since none were seen fallen on the ground..local urchins collect them asap… I do not have pictures of fruits fallen out of that tree… and now will have to wait till next spring and early summer….. POINT 5): FOR further classification: I think one needs better depiction of the fruits that clearly shows the neck and overall shape of the fruit… size..

The pictures on your link are indeed the rose apple I was referring to. I have seen a slightly purple variety and a yellow variety. A leading plant seller in Mumbai has propagated a very interesting tree. As informed by the owner he bought this plant from Vietnam and through grafting has developed this new hybrid and has been selling it since last seven years. I saw it for the first time this year at the show at Rani baug. These are huge red fruits of Jamun, very juicy and more sweeter than the normal small white ones seen in Mumbai. The botanical name was given to me by the owner, hope it is correct! Yes the name is correct, but commonly it is known as Red Wax Jamun Thanks. The nursery call it Red rose apple plant, red jamun. How about S. aqueum, the Water Apple? Thank you … Not sure about this because the fruit size of S. aqueum is smaller. I had my doubt about S. Samarangense also because our database has the fruit size much smaller than what the nursery has propagated, about 7 to 8 inches big fruits.

It’s fruit is not waxy, neither it has any seeds in side, though crsip and juicy and plasantly sweet. This ID is resolved. All the morphological chracteristics of S. Samarangense are present except the size of the fruit ,which as informed is a new hybrid through propagation by the nurserry owner.

This is Syzigium jambos. There is also a chapter on this fruit in Fruitipedia at the link, Fruitipedia. The picture are nice.

Seen at the BBC Show at MNP, Mumbai on 7/3/14. A Bonsai, probably Syzygium Species.

Syzygium Species, probably Syzygium malaccense commonly known as Rose Apple. The bark is dark, the leaf marginal veins are very close to the leaf margin, the fruits are bell shaped, unlike S malaccense. If the fruits are sweet and a bit astringent, it is Syzygium samarangense. If it is acidic, then it is something else. I also think closer to images at Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. & L.M.Perry

Syzygium samarangense in FOI should most probably be of Syzygium polyanthum ?
Pl. correct this image as it is definitely not Syzygium samarangense, if not Syzygium polyanthum ? I send you pictures of Syzygium samarangense & S. polyanthum for comparison. You have to insert correct images at this page. Not corrected so far in FOI.

Attaching a collage of Syzygium samarangense (WATER APPLE/ JAMRUL). In this case the fruit is pure white in colour. There is another one with fruits red in colour. I will upload in another few days.
