Sorry for posting a bulk of images. However thought they would be more helpful in a sequence. The final product missing!

Our Safed Jaam tree in full bloom on the terrace. And expecting a bumper crop this year! Am little confused over the botanical name. Is this the same as Rosa apple? Syzygium malaccense But the pictures on the net showed up a  different fruit for Rose Apple.  Please help with the name.

The foliage of this looks like Syzygium malaccense to me.
The common name ‘Rose Apple’ is typically (at least in USA) applied to Syzygium jambos.

This is not Rose apple. The leaves of Rose Apple are long and narrow.

Anybody could get confused and call it Roseapple by looking at the picture of the flowers and the fruit in the third picture.

Yes.thanks… would like to know what the name of the fruit is…

It appears to be Syzygium samarangense (Wax Jambu, Java Apple)

Many thanks for letting us have the name of the fruit.
I have a couple of these trees bearing so many fruits but did not know the name.
It attracts a lot of birds.

Leaves are about 8 inches long or more each, with acuminate tips.

The leaves indicate Syzygium samarangense, but the filaments are medium sized like those in S. aqueum. We need the pictures of the fruits and the taste of the fruits. I think this may be a hybrid. But wait until we receive the pictures. Thank you.

This is Syzygium samarangense, or maybe a hybrid of it as you have suggested. I remember your KEY you provided in my threads in 2013, yet I have submitted the same species (but another individual) becuase the fruits look so similar to your uploads of S. aqueum in this group. Syzygium samarangense
Wax Apple, Wax Jambu, water apple

Syzygium samarangense from Myrtaceae family.

The white juicy fruits  are sold on footpaths of Mumbai and Pune currently.
Called as Jaam locally. Very tasty

.., … since we being familiar with these fruits, would we agree that these have lot of water ?
The question keeps coming to my mind … would there be a better possibility of this plant being Syzygium aqueum ? … OR why not ? Earnestly requesting responders to take a look at one of my posts at efi thread

To the best of my knowledge
Tree = Syzygium samarangense
Leaves = S. samarangense
Fruits = S. samarangense because
1. The fleshy calyx is elevated (never in S. aqueum)
2. The fruit skin is not very glossy
3. The fruit color is yellowish white, not whitish pink, pink, or red
4. The remaining style is relatively long

5. The fruit taste? This is the easiest key to determine

Correct name is … JAMRUL in bengali, local hindi speaking vendors call it SHADA JAM, for lack of any name in their dialect, scientifically it is , as identifified by so many here in this  forum such  as Satish ji, Dineshji , Ajinkya ji, and Pudji ji et al……..
Syzygium samarangense from Myrtaceae family.  Currently growing and fruiting in Kol Bot Garden….
ITS CURRENTLY in season being sold on the streets .. as shada jam

by the way : the rose apple, S. Jambos… is also on the market, though not as common, now a days in some good markets, but not seen on the street vendors baskets…

Viewed at MIDC Andheri … 20 NOV 07

As far as I can see, all are Syzygium samarangense (Bl.) Merr. & LM Perry.  Although the last four pictures show only flowers with relatively short stamens, but the leaves are still belonged to S. samarangense.  I may be wrong because in some cases there are some intermediates between both samarangense and aqueum.

Many thanks … just for re-information — last 2 + 4 photos belong to the same plant, at MIDC Andheri viewed at different time. Would like to get know whether fruits of both species look similar to the
extent that a plain person would not be able to differentiate them ?

At FAO

Description:
aqueum: 3–10m high with short crooked trunk, 30–50cm in diameter, often branching near base. Irregular crown. Leaves opposite, elliptic-cordate to obovate-oblong, 7– 25cm long, 2.5–16cm wide, with 0.5–
1.5cm long leafstalk, sometimes with aromatic smell when crushed. Inflorescence at tip of twigs or from leaf axils with 3–7 yellow-white flowers, 2.5–3.5cm in diameter, calyx 5–7mm long, 4 petals about 7mm long.
Fruit cone-shaped, glossy white to red, 1.5– 2cm long and 2.5–3.5cm wide, watery with 1–2, sometimes 6 seeds.
samarangense very similar but is somewhat larger, has thick, 3–5mm long leaf stalks, 15mm long calyx and larger pyriform fruits. Improved cultivars have green fruits. Leaves always aromatic smelling.
Key characteristics: Trunk short, crooked, often branching from base; crown irregular; leaves opposite; flowers yellow-white;
aqueum: 5–15 mm long leafstalk and 5–7mm long calyx, small fruits;
samarangense: 3– 5mm long leaf stalk, 15mm long calyx and larger fruit; aromatic xxxxxx
At World Agroforestry Centre … It is not easy to distinguish between the various S. aqueum and S. samarangense fruits.
however:
The wax jambu is glossy – indeed wax-like – and the flesh is rather dry.
The water apple is a watery, thirst-quenching fruit with a glistening, almost translucent skin. xxxxxxxxx
The hand painted illustration in the FAO document showing the conical versus pyriform fruits, make me more inclined towards Syzygium aqueum. Am sure, the fruits that are sold seasonally in and around Mumbai, Thane, or even down south near and around Mangalore, are water apples.

… tending to agree with.. ID of Syzygium samarangense

Perhaps a Myrtaceae member, looking like jamun but missing stamens are confusing, as are somewhat lobed petals ( I hope i am not confusing something).

I think you are right! I should have posted a pic with stamens (which withered). Now that you say, it does look very much like Jamun, I have never seen a young Jamun tree, and never imagined it would be flowering.

Syzygium species

Looks like Syzygium jambos to me.

I think … is correct i.e. Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. & L.M. Perry. We call it jambu semarang. Semarang is a capital city of Central Java, but it was spelled as sAmarang by Blume.

A similar plant is standing in my garden.
I was told that this is a Naashpaati / Pear plant by local nurseryman in umariya.
Its about 6 yrs old
Flowered last year in End April- May and so the this year too.

Looks very similar to … plant description.

Hooghly : Eugenia sp. (JAAMROOL in Bengali) : Attachments (5 + 7).  5 posts by 2 authors.

Very confusing data found on what will be the correct species ID of this plant. It is JAAMROOL in Bengali, produces white fruits, very common in villages.
Flora Indica describes –
1) E. aquea R. – two varieties, one with rose coloured fruits and the other is white
2) E. alba R. – white shining fruits…. very insipid and quite watery.
The fruits (yet to develop) in this species are watery indeed!
“An English Index to the Plants of India” informs JAAMROOL/JAMRUL is E. alba. The malaccensis one is MALACCA-JAMROOL.

Photos were taken on 03/04/2013, in an orchard.

It will be more clear if you send the images of the fruits. To me, it is a hybrid of Syzygium aqueum and S. samarangense. There are some intermediates between both species. The flowers belong to S. aqueum but the leaves are almost similar to S. samarangense.

In Indonesia, I found some cultivars of S. aqueum i.e.: 1) permanently white, 2) white then pink, 3) large pink, 4) small red, 5) large red to dark red. Eugenia alba has been transferred to S. samarangense. Syzygium malaccense has deep pink flowers.

Thank you very much for the details. … also identifies this as Syzygium samarangense. Will try to get its fruits, to receive your view on the probability of a hybrid.
At the time of posting i read your comments in efi thread and in efi thread.
I noted Syzygium samarangense = Eugenia javanica Lamarck (eflora and GRIN) = E. alba Roxb. (MOBOT).

I thought the calyx in my species is elevated – efi thread.

These last three pictures depict Syzygium samarangense we call them JAMBU semarang. If the taste is astringent when young and sweet at maturity, then this must be S. samarangense.

I think you are right, here is a link

this is not Rose Apple. At least not to my knowledge. The Rose apple that I know actually have the flavour of Roses. This fruit does not.

Definitely, what are these called I do not know some people call it champa or something like that. These fruits are edible and please check the link
There is a larger variety which is white in colour and whose flowers are scarlet red. I will post those pictures in a different thread. I do not have the fruits but got some pictures of the tree yesterday along with the flowers.

Oh, OK…. that’s nice…. but rose apple I have seen in some nurseries and gardens on either coast … if labelled as rose apple…also have ROSE RED flowers…..
Your picture shows white flowers… this combination of white flowers and red jamun superficially (based on these 3 pics only) seems to be very similar to the one growing and labeled in the AGRI-Hort garden in Kolkata… that’s the source of my visual ID…
Taxonomists at eflora could all help in differentiating these varieties, I thank them inadvance… as to the varities, and id ….factors etc…

Some days ago … wrote about the differences between Syzygium aqueum & S. samarangense, where the first one has fruit cone- shaped, glossy white to red, while S. samarangense has larger pyriform fruits. Thus:
IMG_6369.JPG should be Syzygium aqueum (Burm. f.) Alston

I will add another special character for S. aqueum is the ACIDIC FRUIT.

Knowing what I know NOW ….. some clarity and some more confusion???
SEVERAL POINTS: POINT 1): This is wax jambu in these pictures … the size and exact shape of the fruit is not visible… the rose colored ones are often labeled ” rose apple” in local supermarkets… ie it must be a local or colloquial name…… hence the confusion….
POINT 2): Another confusion is taste of the fruit… some fruits , some years from the same tree, produce fruits with nice sweet/sour (very dilute of course) taste… some years its just flat… this year it was of flat tasting fruits…
POINT 3): BUT THE REAL ROSE APPLE IS
A DIFFERENT FRUIT ALTOGETHER, as Yadzy Ji pointed out …. AND I HAVE ALREADY PRESENTED A DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHIC DEPICTION OF WHAT IS A REAL ROSE JAMBU or ROSE APPLE… that has a definite ROSE scent and from which a rose essence was extracted in the 1840s… PLEASE
SEE MY ORIGINAL THREAD
The trees and their flowers and fruits I presented were identified by established botanical gardens (arboretums… ) run by universities….in California… no mistakes there… AND the fruits I presented I ate them myself… VERY PLEASANT rose scent and mouth feel very different from the WAX JAMBU..regardless of color…. and regardless of colloquial names be it rose apple or rose jambu or whatever…
***
POINT 4) : I have some pictures of flowers of a properly identified tree labeled Syzygium samarangense
at Kolkata Botanical Garden … flowers are definitely white and fruits were also white…. since none were seen fallen on the ground..local urchins collect them asap… I do not have pictures of fruits fallen out of that tree… and now will have to wait till next spring and early summer…..
POINT 5): FOR further classification: I think one needs better depiction of the fruits that clearly shows the neck and overall shape of the fruit… size..
Though I think a lot of variation is possible…
MAY I PLEASE SUGGEST that …. JADZY Ji send us full side-view of the fruits, size, and a cut surface picture so that the shape can be judged,,,, POINT 6) : and PERHAPS the more important point is … just like Hydrangeas.. and perhaps other plants… the colors of the flowers (and perhaps the fruits) may vary with local soil conditions, pH, and presence / and /or absence of some metals. and micro-nutrients ….. may be some one can start a thesis project….

The pictures on your link are indeed the rose apple I was referring to. I have seen a slightly purple variety and a yellow variety. Both are sweet, unlike the sour sweet taste of the fruits in my pictures.

This is, most probably, Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. & L.M.Perry (Java Apple) of Myrtaceae family.

Requesting ID of this Syzigium species – Jijamata Udyan Flower Show 2014 – Feb 2014 :: 04032014 :: ARK-05 : Attachments (2). 4 posts by 3 authors. Requesting to please ID this plant captured at the Flower Show 2014 at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai in February 2014. Which Syzygium species is this? Is it the same that we cal ‘Jam’ in Marathi?

Syzygium samarangense.  Java apple / wax apple

yes, supporting the id

Syzygium samarangense ‘Kaget Putih’

A leading plant seller in Mumbai has propagated a very interesting tree. As informed by the owner he bought this plant from Vietnam and through grafting has developed this new hybrid and has been selling it since last seven years. I saw it for the first time this year at the show at Rani baug. These are huge red fruits of Jamun, very juicy and more sweeter than the normal small white ones seen in Mumbai. The botanical name was given to me by the owner, hope it is correct!

Yes the name is correct, but commonly it is known as Red Wax Jamun

Thanks. The nursery call it Red rose apple plant, red jamun.

How about S. aqueum, the Water Apple?

Thank you … Not sure about this because the fruit size of S. aqueum is smaller. I had my doubt about S. Samarangense also because  our database has the fruit size much smaller than what the nursery has propagated, about 7 to 8 inches big fruits.

this plant in the attached photo is Syzygium samarangense (Java Apple) . Looks delicious, this is a  will be a personal appeal but do someone have any interest to send me few of them? ha ha ha

You certainly deserve them.

May you get a parcel of them from …
I tried something similar near Bardhaan market a few days back- though not very tasty but costly.

Thanks for the confirmation of ID. I will be most happy to send you a parcel of the fruits as … has stated you deserve them, but you will have to wait for two long years before they reach you- that’s the time the plant will  take to start fruiting.  But seriously, because of your interest I am going to try and find out from the nursery owner if they can be made available earlier by them. Hope for the best !

I do not find any similarity of this fruit with Jamun fruit.
It’s fruit is not waxy, neither it has any seeds in side, though crsip and juicy and plasantly sweet.

This ID is resolved. All the morphological chracteristics of S. Samarangense are present except the size of the fruit ,which as informed is a new hybrid through propagation by the nurserry owner.

I will be very happy if these photos find their place in the “fruitipedia” site. But i think it may not be S. jambos, i have an earlier post on S. jambosefi thread.

I have more fruit pics. I would be more happy if you find them good enough for your site. I am pasting the urls

A Bonsai, probably Syzygium Species.
All the buds were unopened.

May be Wax apple tree

This could be Syzygium buxifolium, used in Bonsai.

I support …,

Syzygium samarangense, but I am waiting for the fruits.

Thanks for supporting …
But for the fruits, you might have to keep on waiting…..since I saw this at a Bonsai Show.

Won’t get to observe the tree very soon again.

Kind identification of this fruit, arunachal pradesh : 3 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (1)

Syzygium Species, probably Syzygium malaccense commonly known as Rose Apple.

The bark is dark, the leaf marginal veins are very close to the leaf margin, the fruits are bell shaped, unlike S malaccense. If the fruits are sweet and a bit astringent, it is Syzygium samarangense.  If it is acidic, then it is something else.
