Looks like star jasmine : Jasminum multiflorum.  kakada hoovu in kannada(?)

Yes I too go with Jasminum multiflorum is a species of jasmine <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmine>,
in the family Oleaceae <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oleaceae>.

A native of India, Kundo (in Bengali) is known as in English as Downy Jasmine, and Star Jasmine. Winter Jasmine, Indian Jasmine,
It flowers in Indian<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India> winter.
It is also called Magha Mallika (Sanskrit <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanskrit>) since it flowers in Magha <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magha_(month)> winter month in the Indian Hindu calendar <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_Calendar>.
It flowers so much that sometimes the flowers cover most of the leaves leaving everything white Synonyms
The stems and leaves are covered with a downy pubescence (and hence the name) that gives the plant an overall grayish-green appearance. Jasminum pubescens/ Jasminum gracillimum / Jasminum bifarium

It is J. multiflorum also known as J. pubescens. It is a shrub. Jasmine is both shrub and creeper. Chameli is creeper, and motia is shrub, although I have seen motia changing into a creeper.

I had attempted a write-up on Jasmines sometime back
The link is: Anandkbhatt

attaching a pic showing the three different flowers in discussion and what I feel about them. … I hope I am correct. In the pics posted by me the buds do have a deep pink stalk but once they bloom the stalk is green with a pinkish tinge, secondly the flower has more petals which are thinner than J Malabaricum .
Really wonderful write up by you on Jasmines. For so many days I wanted to know what is Jui (in Marathi) called in English, what is wild Jasmine called in Marathi. But I am confused about differentiating motia from mogra till
now I would call all of them Mogra. Thanks once again

Thank you … A quick online search for Jasmine shows my specimen to be closer to Jasminum multiflorum. However, I do not see images of the branches with lighter leaf buds anywhere on the Internet. Please advise.

right of the top of my head I don’t recall

will think about it and if something pops up will let you know….

To me it is Jasminum multiflorum (syn name Jasminum pubescens).

I knew … would know … he has a large collection of the jasmines from various parts of the county
A few days ago on a whim I had requested … to compile a set of his large collection of the jasmines because often they are most commonly seen and admired plants  and most commonly mistakenly ided…  He has very graciously told me he will given some time, will do just that…
…:   That light green color of the young leaves may be a sharp contrast to the older darker (?grimier?) leaves… … and not a special identifying feature. I am not sure what does that pointed end to the white petals mean? local phenomenon or wintery defense?
serendipity will find us the answers unless somebody has really studied these …

Thank you …. You are right. The lighter leaves may very well be the young ones. Though the older, darker leaves were not grimy if I remember correctly.

I am forwarding it second time for identification with some more pictures I hope some body would know what kind of jasmine is it. It grows wild in the dried river beds of kanha in month of Feburary. It is a large shrub with opposite leaves & flowers are full of sweet fragrance.

Looks close to Jasminum nitidum, but I’ll defer to local experts.

I think I will go with … this plant is Jasminum nitidum !!

I have seen this plant in Matheran. No idea which Jasminum sp.

I think this is Rose Bud Jasmine, also known as Everblooming Jasmine, Gold Coast Jasmine
Bot. name: Jasminum dichotomum
Native to Africa
http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=JASMINUM_DICHOTOMUM
http://www.invasive.org/gist/photos/jasdi02.jpg

You may well be correct.
J. dichotomum is a weed in South Florida, USA. Leaves here are typically a much lighter green than those in … photos though, possibly due to nutrient deficiency on the extremely alkaline soil? It is a fairly strong scrambler, often smothering other vegetation. Flowers are considerably smaller than J. nitidum and have a different fragrance.

The buds of J. nitidum are long and slender, different from what is seen in … pictures. What surprises me is that J. dichotomum is not common as a garden plant here, but still seems to have escaped cultivation in Kanha.

Does J. nitidum set seed locally there? I’ve never seen any fruits on it in Florida or California, probably one of the reasons it is a recommended species here. I don’t know if it is sterile (seems unlikely) or has a specific pollinator not found in the US?
J. dichotomum sets seeds copiously here in Florida, undoubtedly contributing to its weed status.

…, no idea whether J. nitidum sets seed here. Again, not a very common garden plant here.
About J. dichotomum, if an African native can become a weed in Florida, it could also be capable of naturalizing in India. … has seen it growing in Maharashtra.

I would strongly suggest monitoring J. dichotomum there. It appears to be bee-pollinated (we have few other pollinators likely to do the job; perhaps hummingbirds as well?) and sets copious seed that local birds here apparently eat/distribute. With the very healthy foliage there, I’d say that the plant is well-adapted to local conditions.

I think close to images at Jasminum multiflorum (Burm.f.) Andrews

Jasminum Species seen at a housing complex in Pune.
A cultivated plant.

I think it should be Jasminum multiflorum (Burm.f.) Andrews as per images and details herein.
Here are the keys from Flora of China to differentiate between the two:
44 (43) Leaves ovate-cordate, base cordate, pilose on both surfaces; corolla tube 1.2-1.5 cm 36 Jasminum multiflorum
+ Leaves ovate to lanceolate, base often cuneate to rounded or truncate, pubescent or glabrous except along veins abaxially; corolla tube 1.5-3 cm. (45)
45 (44) Leaves usually acuminate, 4.5-15 cm; corolla lobes 1.2-1.7 cm 35 Jasminum tonkinense
+ Leaves acute, 1.5-11 cm; corolla lobes 0.8-1.1 cm 34 Jasminum elongatum

Here is the description for both from Flora of China:
Jasminum multiflorum (N. L. Burman) Andrews
Shrubs, scrambler or weak climbers to 3 m. Branchlets terete, densely pilose. Leaves opposite, simple; petiole 5-10 mm, densely pilose; leaf blade ovate-cordate, often broadly so, 3-8 × 1.5-5 cm, papery, ± scattered pilose on both surfaces, glabrescent, except on midrib and veins, base cordate, apex acute to sometimes slightly acuminate, mucronulate; primary veins 3 or 4 on each side of midrib. Inflorescences terminal on side shoots, many flowered, congested; bracts leafy, basal ovate, 1.5-2 cm, upper linear, 3-5 mm. Pedicel 0-2 mm. Calyx densely pilose; tube ca. 1 mm; lobes 6-9, filiform, (2-)5-7 mm. Corolla white, sweetly scented; tube 1.2-1.5 cm;lobes 7-9, acute, 1-1.5 cm. Fruit not seen. Fl. Oct-Apr.
Widely cultivated in southern China and round the world [Native to India and perhaps elsewhere in SE Asia, but certainly not in Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and doubtfully in Myanmar and Vietnam].
Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willdenow
Shrubs scandent, 1-7 m. Branchlets terete, slightly pubescent to densely tomentose. Jasminum elongatum is a very widespread and variable species.

On checking all the posts in efi site for both the species, confusion remains despite the details and keys as above. This must have been further compounded by being in cultivation for a long period.
Catalogue of Life lists five varieties as below,
Both Flora of Pakistan and Checklist of Nepal list Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willdenow as Jasminum amplexicaule Buch.-Ham. ex G. Don (This species resembles Jasminum multiflorum very much but differs in its shorter calyx teeth and corolla lobes, and in its scentless flowers. The venation of the leaves is more or less open in Jasminum amplexicaulewhereas it is closed in Jasminum multiflorum as per Flora of Pakistan)
Flora of Pakistan gives the following keys:
16 (15) Flowers fragrant; cymes sometimes axillary or on dwarf Lateral branchlets. Calyx fulvous-villous, teeth almost as long as the corolla tube. Frequently cultivated Jasminum multiflorum
+ Flowers scentless; cymes terminal, Calyx pubescent, teeth of about half the length of the corolla tube. Rarely cultivated Jasminum amplexicaule (syn. of Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willdenow)

However, some aspects appear to be contradictory to Flora of China description.

Thanks for the details. I am really confused.

Jasminum sambac(L.) Aiton (accepted name)  ??

To me also, it appears closer to images at Jasminum sambac

It doesn’t look like J. sambac to me. It may belong to the J. multiflorum/ J. amplexicaule group.

Was it cultivated ?
If so, then it may be Jasminum multiflorum (Burm.f.) Andrews

Yes , cultivated!
