Fruits & Vegetables Week: Capsicum annuum, bell peppers:
Capsicum annuum, the bell peppers with large fruits, almost as long as broad, green when unripe and turning orange, yellow or red when mature. Bell pepper or sweet pepper fruit is frequently consumed in its unripe form, when the fruit is still green. Green as well as ripe fruits are also used as salad and pizza toppings.

– we get these three colors vegetable paper and al of them are used in the kitchen. There are other colors too. Read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum
In this vegetable and fruit week I was reading more information on the net as well. Strangely there is more and detailed information and also more fotos in german wiki than engl. wiki. So if you look for information try the german language too. You will see more fotos there.

– I used to grow these vegetable in pots.  Now I am thinking  of buying the seeds after seeing the photos sent by you.

Is this Capsicum frutescens or Capsicum annuum var. annuum?

efi page on Capsicum frutescens & Capsicum annuum var. annuum

KEY in Bengal Plants –

i) pedicels solitary, variously erect or reflexed; fruits erect or spreading or pendent, equal or longer than pedicel = annuuam L. & its var.
ii) pedicles two or more, erect; fruits always erect, shorter than pedicels = frutescens & its var.
I think this one is C. annuuam L.
I take this opportunity to attach some photo I have recorded recently and didn’t ID earlier.

Thank you … for the information.
As per the plantlist, C. frutescens is a synonym of C. annuum (accepted name)..This adds to my confusion.

Yes, they seem to be synonymous. There is a note in this regard at the end of FoC page –
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200020513.
While GRIN thinks two are different taxa the syn. given in C. frutescens L. leads to an interesting document – http://ozelacademy.com/ocak%202012%20paid.pdf

Thank you … for the information.. and the doc regarding C. assamicum.

Capsicum annuum

.

Solanaceae Week: Capsicum annuum, the Jalapeno chilli pepper:
Capsicum annuum, the Jalapeno chilli pepper, prounced Halapeno is a medium sized chilli pepper with a warm burning sensation whe eaten. It is often pickled and a favourite component of Jalapeno pizzas. Very common in Delhi, USA and elsewhere. It is somewhat swollen but longer than broad, smaller than bell peppers.

.

Solanaceae Week: Capsicum annuum, the Serrano chilli pepper :
Capsicum annuum, the Serrano chilli pepper, that originated in the Sierras (hence the name) mountainous regions of the states Puebla and Hidalgo in Mexico.
Mature serrano pepper plants reach a height of between one and a half and five feet tall. Each plant can hold up to fifty pepper pods. Unripe serrano peppers are green, but the color at maturity varies. Common colors are green, red, brown, orange, or yellow.
The serrano peppers much hotter than Jalapeno pepper and typically eaten raw or used in the Mexican cuisine, pico de gallo

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Capsicum-annuum-ornamental-chilli-pepper-California-1-7.jpg
Capsicum annuum ‘Ornamental Chilli Pepper’
Ornamental chilli pepper recently developed cultivars are now becoming popular as potted plants and sold in reputed stores and nurseries in California

yes very popular to bring them in when its snowing outside is very chilly out…
a little color on the kitchen window or the dining table is uplifting…
and to us Indians .. can be edible in the curries ..

.

I have been wondering about these chillies in Northeast where each hotter than the other chillies are being produced-apparently on their own, such as Naga Chilli, Raja Chilli, Bhoot Jolokia etc.
Since chillies have been an introduced species into India, what are the ancestors of these hot chillies and are these indigenous to the North east India region, and if not, then how and when were these introduced. Were all these chilli species introduced by only one country Portugal or were there others?
I am mystified because only in these regions are these very very hot fiery chillies found and nowhere else in India, where only hot and mild chillies are found.
Further, in Bangalore two varieties of chillies used to be commonly sold by vegetable sellers, the milder longer variety and the shorter, fiery variety that was known as ‘Turki’ mirchi. These Turki chillies were considered not only as fiery as the Turks who ruled over Mysore-Bangalore, but were also thought to have been brought by them.
Also mild chillies that are a fiery red only are the Guntur chillies and the Kashmiri chillies. So a whole variety of chillies are there in the country, and I wonder did the ancestors of these varied chillies come into the country, and that too selectively to some places only, and how did all these varieties come in and spread.
Looking forward to hearing from you all,

All chillies belong to the same species Capsicum annuum. Earlier short erect hot chillies were placed under C. frutescens, but now they are under the same species. Cultivars with different degree of hotness develop due to long time adaptation to different climates, hybridization and selection. As a rule chillies of hotter climates are hotter as compared to colder climates.

Thank you … for your valuable inputs.
Looking forward to inputs as to how these introduced species spread across India.

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Capsicum-annuum-Chilli%20poblano-California-1.jpg

Fruits & Vegetables Week: Capsicum annuum, the Poblano pepper:
Capsicum annuum, the Poblano pepper, often sold in USA under the name pasilla (which is a smaller pepper mostly used fried), a mild chilli pepper from Maxico in the State of Puebla, known as ancho when dried. While poblanos tend to have a mild flavor, occasionally and unpredictably a poblano can have significant heat. Different peppers from the same plant have been reported to vary substantially in heat intensity. The fruit looks somewhat like bell pepper but is much longer than broad, about three to six inches long and about two to three inches wide. Green when immature turning to red when mature. Peppers are consumed fried, stuffed, coated in whipped egg, or roasted and peeled and canned.
When dried this pepper becomes a broad, flat, heart-shaped pod called an ancho chile, often ground into a powder.

I think bird cherry, Solanum pseudocapsicum

This looks like Cherry Pepper (Capsicum annuum var. annuum)
http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Cherry%20Pepper.html

You are right, the plant is cherry pepper, some times also known as Capsicum annuum var. cerasiforme (sorting plant names; Taiwan Plant Names; Annotated checklist of Flowering Plants of nepal), but considered C. annuum var. annuum by GRIN. Cherry pepper fruits are usually nodding but rarely erect also like bird cherry, which however has larger flowers and much narrower leaves.

May this link of use to you.
I think red chilli powder we use is Capsicum frutescens L. (syn. C. fastigiatum, C. minimum, C. minimum) as per the link: http://www.plantnames.unimelb.Capsicum_frutescens.html
But your plant appear to be Capsicum annuum (we call it Simla Mirch or Capsicum) as per Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum_annuum
See more pictures of Capsicum annuum flowers at:
http://images.google.co.in/Capsicum+annuum+G=Search+Images

As per Wikipedia link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capsicum , in Indian English, the word “capsicum” is used exclusively for Capsicum annuum. All other varieties of hot capsicum are called chilli. In northern India and Pakistan, Capsicum annuum is also commonly called “Shimla Mirch” in the native languages.

Please identify the exact Capsicum species and the fruits look like tomatoes

is it not the bhoot jalooka chilli?

got it\ its flat bottomed fruits and plant with large leaves

i dont understand the language but pictures are clear enough.
most likely Scotch Bonnet peppers
preferred in west africa, caribbean and Jamaican cooking
very hot, ranging from 100,000 to 350,000 SHU (Scoville heat units)

It is not Bhut Jolokia which we Bengalis call Kamranga marich
It is different from Bhut Jolokia/Kamranga because it is medium hot, unlike Bhut Jolokia
It is not brought from any foreign country
Some native farmers who do not have access to outside world cultivate this variety and bring to weekly market for sale.

what part of bengal is it?

This is not correct that it is from Africa etc. It is indegeneous and it is not that much hot, it is medium hot. Tribals cultivate this variety.
Please examine carefully

May be some variety of Capsicum annuum var. annuum

Solanaceae Week: Capsicum annuum ornamental chilli pepper:
Capsicum annuum ‘Ornamental Chilli Pepper’
Ornamental chilli pepper recently developed cultivars are now becoming popular as potted plants and sold in reputed stores and nurseries.

– Yes .., edible but as these erect small chilli peppers (formerly C. frutescencs) are very hot. These ornamental chilli peppers are sold at the time of christmas along with Poinsetia and other popular plants hence also named as Christmas Pepper.
http://www.guide-to-houseplants.com/ornamental-chili-pepper.html

– They are so pungent that once I had left some in my pant pocket and got wet during the monsoon. I forgot to remove the chilli from the pocket till evening. When I went for my bath, I realized that it had scalded my skin. They are deadly.

– In Latehar dist in Jharkhand, one small green chilly was found which was as deadly as probably this one. they said that its continuous use would surely give you ulcer after a month or so.

Pepper sp for Id- 231211-NS1- Flora of Madhya Pradesh:
This Black pepper variety was a planted sp,. photographed at Betul, MP, on 14 th Dec 11.

Capsicum frutescens, the chili pepper
Calling it black pepper would be a confusion.

Its not even black… look at it…carefully, skin is same color as darkest of dark eggplants (brinjals in India) one could even do a quick and easy paper chromatography of sorts… red, blue, green and brownish color lines or rings would form … just in water and may be some alcohol added… I had left a few cross sections by mistake on a table napkin.. not even a blotting paper… colors diffused out… did not photograph it.. may be i should have … but it was a few years ago.. dont remember if it was before the digitals…
AGree with … calling these chilli peppers, black pepper implies the small round black peppers: piper nigrum…

I think it comes in some other colors also like light yellow!!!!! Nice Shots

Pl. see Capsicum chinense
Did anyone tell you that it is Bhut Jolokia ?

Actually I bought some seeds from Mumbai suppliers but it mixed up with other sp. seeds and it looked different from sp. found here.
So I was guessing accordingly.

OK.

Not sure about C. chinense
Could be close to common pepper or its var.

It is Capsicum annuum as per keys and details herein.

May I know the name of Capsicum species ?

Capsicum baccatum L. ??

interesting history and chromosomal analysis
https://pubag.nal.usda.gov/download/17481/PDF
added here to keep in our databse
— my thoughts on this exercise with these two cases of yours
you may not find an exact match for your chillies in the published pics
for very many reasons
you can however come close
please photograph the flowers
measuring size and also the leaves again measuring size, hairyness etc
and all parts of the developing fruits
and if you have access to a agri lab and they are willing
store some samples
so genetic analysis can be done
the peppers evolve and hybridize like crazy
that’s why the world has thousands of varieties from the original few.
that Columbus found and Vasco brought over to India.

i wonder if … reads these things????

Thank you very much. I read everything

well then!! thoughts??
