FLOWERING PLANTS OF INDIA, DICOTYLEDONS, Vol-I (Acanthaceae-Avicenniaceae) authored by S. Karthikeyan, M. Sanjappa and S. Moorthy and published by BSI, Kolkata in 2009 is an important document for names, authority and distribution of Acanthaceae species in India.
As per this document (Karthikeyan et al., 2009) following species of Asystasia occur in India:
Asystasia chelonoides Nees [var. chelonoides; var. quadrangularis]
A. crispata Benth.
A. dalzelliana Santapau
A. gangetica (L.) Anderson
A. indica H.J.Chowdhery & Av. Bhattacharjee
A. macrocarpa Nees (syn. of Mackaya macrocarpa (Wall. ex Nees) Das)
A. mysurensis (Roth.) T.Anderson
A. pusilla C.B.Clarke
A. travancorica Bedd.
Based on the following specimens at Kew Herbarium:
A. nemorum Nees also occur in India.
Scrutiny of these names in The Plant List 2013 indicate them as accepted.

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Asystasia

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source references it will be wonderful.

Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

I have added the list of Indian species based on the relevant references.

A. nemorum is still very confused- pl. see efi thread. Other things seems to match.

Thanks,…, Where did you get the reference of A. nemorum Nees occuring in India ?
Pl. see Asystasia

I have mentioned that based on two herbarium specimens at Kew (links given) A.nemorum occur in India. These two specimens were collected from India which is sufficient evidence to say that the species occur in India.

Thanks, … There seems to be some confusion between A. nemorum Nees, Asystasia dalzelliana & Asystasia chelonoides.
Hope some of the experts can sort it out.

Asystasia chelonoides VERSUS Asystasia dalzelliana : 5 posts by 2 authors.
1) … is Asystasia chelonoides distributed in forest area surrounding Mumbai / Thane, that is Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnala Bird Sanctuary ?
2) … is Asystasia chelonoides confusingly close to Asystasia dalzelliana (syn. Asystasia violacea) ? … if so, any quick key to their ID.

Recently … has stated in another thread (Is it Asystasia ? ID25062013) as
A.chelonoides is now A.chelonoides Nees var. variabilis [Nees in DC] Almeida [comb.Nov.]. It is a separate species.”

Illustration at FOC shows A.chelonoides Nees as a syn. of A. nemorum.
And Asystacia nemorum [previously Asystasia dalzelliana / Asystacia violacea] as per Dr.Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, Vol 4-A, pg.9 as quoted by … in another thread
Is it Asystasia ? ID25062013

Thanks, …, Flora of China says:
“…A. nemorum has a compact inflorescence with flowers clustered toward the apex, a long and slender corolla tube, blue corollas, and is known only from Peninsular Malaysia (where cultivated) and Java (where native). …….” & does not link it with Asystasia dalzelliana.
None of the sources at Asystasia, links A. nemorum with Asystasia dalzelliana.
Thus I am not accepting Dr. Almida’s views in this matter until something new comes up.

I will wait for response to my latter query:
2) … is Asystasia chelonoides confusingly close to Asystasia dalzelliana (syn. Asystasia violacea) ? … if so, any quick key to their ID.

Pl. see Asystasia

Thank you very much … Difference in habit is a clear key to separate Asystasia chelonoides and Asystasia dalzelliana.

.

Pl. go through Asystasia page with images of species (done by me) in efloraofindia.

If you find any mis-identification, pl. let us know. If anybody can send images of other species of this genera (for incorporation in the website), if any, it will be really nice.

Also, if anybody is interested to take up the activity of inserting images on efloraofindia pages from efloraofindia posts, pl. let us know.
