Wonderful details, …

Style and Stigma visible very clearly. Attachments (1)

I have my doubts about this coming with C.cana – see the posting I am about to make of an image taken in H.P. of what I consider is C.cana.

I think this may be Campanula pallida as per images and keys at Flora of China (Hypanthium obconic or campanulate, hispid; calyx lobes deltoid, narrowly triangular, or subulate, 2-8 mm, abaxially hispid (sometimes only along veins), margin entire or rarely serrulate as per details at C. pallida)

Thank you, … Even I have some doubts regarding it’s identity.
Flora Simlensis mentioned Campanula pallida (as syn. C. colorata) and included C. canescens and C. cana under this.
Plants I clicked were only 15cm in height and procumbent and not erect as for C. palida. There is another species- C. argyrotricha mentioned in Flora Simlensis but with bluish flowers.

Thanks, … After going through all the posts in efi, I find them very difficult to segregate. Keys in Flora of China are also very confusing and there is no doubt that both are very close.
It will not be a bad idea to follow Flora Simlensis for the time being.
May I request you to pl. post full botanical names with citations as mentioned in Flora Simlensis.
I think … will also agree for this.

Even Flora of China is not reliable is evident from corolla being mentioned as purple, blue-purple, or blue for C. pallida and blue, blue-purple, or violet for C. cana
There is no mention of white corolla at all.
Flora of Pakistan does not mention anything about Campanula cana
BSI has not released any flora on Campanulaceae so far.

As desired by you, I am posting the details of all the species of
Campanula found in H.P.

Thanks, … I will follow Flora simlensis in this matter after seeing details closely of all posts in efi, till some one comes up with clear differences between the two.

Sir Henry Collett had included both under Campanula colorata.

Key from FLORA OF CHAMBA
1. Annual; flowers sessile, 0.4-0.8 cm long; calyx-lobes 1-4 mm long ……………..
2. Erect, leaves subacute, calyx-lobes 1.5- 4 mm long …… C. dimorphantha  (mentioned as syn. C. benthamii )
2. Decumbent, leaves obtuse, calyx-lobes 1 mm long ….. C. cana
1. Perrenial; flowers pedicelled, 0.7-1.3 cm long; calyx-lobes 4.5-8 mm long … C. pallida
Calyx-lobes in my samples are 7-8 mm long thus pointing towards Campanula pallida. Flower colour in C. pallida is mentioned as blur-purple adding to the confusion. Secondly, plants were small hardly 15 cm and ascending and not erect as reported for C. pallida.
I believe now that my plant is C. pallida and not C. cana where flowers are sessile, calyx-lobes 1 mm long, corolla 6-8 mm long and leaves hardy 1 cm in length.

Thanks, …, If we follow this key, all our posted plants are of Campanula pallida.

Yes, …

Then all my posts are C. pallida !

We should take all our posts as pallida, until somebody can prove that both are different in view of wide ranging confusions in different floras.

Yes, … Sir Henry Collett in Flora Simlensis considered C. cana and C. pallida as same and had put them under C. colorata.

It means, even he was not able to differentiate between them.

Should I go through Campanula species at efloraofindia??

Yes, you should and point out the corrections needed.

This species is one of the very thoroughly discussed in our group based on plants uploaded by … (with 35 responses)
After critical analysis I come to understand that the second set uploaded by … (not the first set which may be a different plant), his plant represented on Flowers of India and my photographs from Chakrata attached here belong to Campanula pallida var. pallida and share common feature of triangular toothed calyx lobes much shorter than corolla and covered with hispid hairs on calyx, corolla and leaves.
Plant with ascending or erect stems up to 50 cm tall, hispid; leaves alternate, elliptic, lanceolate to ovate, lower with winged petiole, upper sessile, hispid especially along veins, margin denticulate to entire; flowers purple to blue-purple, somewhat pendent, 10-12 mm long; calyx deeply lobed, segments triangular, somewhat toothed, 3-6 mm long, hispid especially along veins outside; corolla campanulate, lobes shoter than tube or as long as tube; style included; capsule obovoid to globose, hairy.

This plant is also in my database and I will post it also

Agreed Sir

This purple-flowered Campanula was shot from Chakrata area..
I hope this matches with this  ..Campanula pallida

I think yes, but please check something outside calyx in third photograph, you may enlarge your original and crop flower to blow up. If these are appendages, it cant be C. pallida

Attaching a cropped image for closer view, please..

Beautiful flower of this Campanula.

Nice photograph uploaded. The flower appears as Campanula patula because of hairy peduncle

C. patula is a much different delicate plant with linear leaves, spreading petals and and very narrow calyx lobes,

Campanulla Sp for ID. Location near Lakhanpur village Height 7000 feet. Aug 29, 2016.

This appears to be Campanula pallida. I have come across it a number of times in Nepal – whilst the individual flowers can be attractive (from pale lilac to purple), overall it often has a rather ‘weedy’ appearance ‘Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal’ gives an altitudinal range of 1000-4500m.  ‘Flowers of Himalaya’ say cultivated areas, stone walls & banks – which fits with my experience of it in Nepal. Collet found it to be common in Shimla; there is a line drawing of it in ‘Flora Simlensis’; I question the reliability of the description of this species in this book along with synonyms given.
Collet and Stewart knew it as Campanula colorata; the latter author said very common and very variable, separating var. pallida and var. tibetica (which he felt might well be given specific rank) – the latter variety being recorded from Ladakh. I noted what I took to be this variety growing shaded & protected at the base of large boulders near Koksar (just over the Rohtang Pass, the first main settlement one comes to if one turns West, towards Leh). ‘Flora of Lahuaul-Spiti’ mentions both varieties in Lahaul. Campanulaceae account for ‘Flora of Pakistan’ say the petals of var. tibetica are bluish-white or pale blue.

Elevation : 7000 ft.

please help me to identify the following species
Species for Identification –
location – Deothachi, Mandi District, Himachal Pradesh
Altitude- 2800-3200m

Please check Campanula pallida

it is always much more difficult and time-consuming to reliably identify a plant when there is only a single image and there is insufficient close-up detail of floral parts and foliage.  Some species within a genus can be distinctive enough and readily matched but it is always useful to have “supporting evidence”.  PLEASE, on future occasions take and submit many more images per specimen, in good focus and close-up – if you refer to my web-site on the flora of the NW Himalaya (see: https://sites.google.com/a/shpa.org.uk/fowh/impatiens-1) this will offer extensive advice; do look through the whole site but first see the images taken of Impatiens glandulifera showing much greater detail, obtained using a modest compact digital camera. As you can see, the images provide vastly more information – which I view as “clues”, the equivalent to pieces in a jig-saw puzzle.  The more piece, which one can view clearly, the easier it is to arrive at an identification and the greater confidence one has in it.  Otherwise one can readily end up with a misidentification.  Too many data-bases, whether digital or old-fashioned printed ones, just with text or pictures, a littered with misidentified plants, which contributes to confusion and misleads.
As to this particular image, it is certainly of a Campanula and seems to be C.pallida – the flowers seem relatively large. I cannot see some of the detail, so have some reservations.  ‘Flowers of the Himalaya’ records this from Afghanistan to SE China @ 1200-4500m in cultivated areas, on stone walls and banks – which this seems to be (amongst Cotoneaster, Geranium and Potentilla, reminding me of equivalent elevation on the Rohtang).  Stewart knew this as C.colorata, describing it as very common and very variable from 500-2800m in N.Pakistan and Kashmir – some forms are very weedy in appearance.  He recognised var. tibetica, recorded from Chitral through to Ladakh; I saw at the base of boulders at Koksar (just over the Rohtang Pass in Lahaul) what I considered to be this variant – Stewart fight it might well be given specific rank but the plant you photographed does not fit this.
There are quite a number of Campanulas known in the NW Himalaya – much confusion remains as to distinguishing between some of them.  In cultivation, such
Campanulas appear to be prone to hybridisation.  I wonder if that is a factor in the wild?  If so, that would certainly complicate matters.  IF those posting images on EFI can take more quality images, this will help us resolve numerous identification riddles.  When covering C.alsinoides Stewart observed that this seemed like an apetalous form of C.colorata var. tibetica (see above) or of C.argyrotricha.  He stated that the cleistogamous forms of Campanula are often hard to identify.  He thought someone needed to cultivate the forms of this genus in the garden or a greenhouse.
Excuse this all sounding complicated but unfortunately, it often is, if one is to arrive at an identification which can be relied upon – otherwise we just increase the muddle and confusion

To me it looks more closer to the images at Campanula cana Wall. rather than Campanula pallida Wall. as per comparative images at Campanula
However, both species appear quite close as per the following keys in FOC:
21 (20) Calyx lobes narrowly triangular to subdeltoid, toothed or not; leaves often hispid, less frequently pannose abaxially; stems single or several from one caudex, erect or ascending. 10 C. pallida
+ Calyx lobes subulate-triangular to narrowly triangular, rarely toothed; leaves densely pannose abaxially; stems usually numerous from one caudex, often diffuse, less often ascending. 11 C. cana

May I request … to pl. check them thoroughly.

On further scrutiny, I think this may be Campanula pallida only as per images and keys at Flora of China (Hypanthium obconic or campanulate, hispid; calyx lobes deltoid, narrowly triangular, or subulate, 2-8 mm, abaxially hispid (sometimes only along veins), margin entire or rarely serrulate as per details at C. pallida)

What would you call it in view of your recent posts and keys in Flora of China.

Campanula pallida in FOI may be Campanula cana as per images, details and keys herein.
Pl. see Campanula pallida in efi with images and details.

Campanula pallida versus Campanula cana is an issue that has perplexed me for a long time. … is witness to that.
For example, I am not able to see the difference between this Campanula pallida and this Campanula cana posted in efi.

The Campanula cana pictures in Flora of China sites, look different to me (in the shape of the flower) compared to the flowers shown in the above efi links

Our flowers seem to have a narrower bell shape, and longer, narrower sepals.

In view of discussions in another thread with wonderful inputs provided by …, it will be better if we keep plants identified as either of the two as Campanula pallida

“It could be Campanula ramulosa Wall., from Nilgiri and Kodaikanal hills at 2000 – 2300 m alt. Here the height of the plant is important. C. ramulosa is usually 6 – 10 cm tall only. The photographs do not indicate any idea about the height of the plant.

“Plants were not as short as 6 – 10 cm only, not very tall either. About a feet tall.” from …

Campanula ramulosa Wall. is a syn. of Campanula pallida
I think Campanula trachelium is not found in India. Pl. see Campanula, Wikipedia & WCSP

Campanula pallida from Kashmir-GS28062022-1: 8 high res. images.
Campanula pallida Wall.

Syn: C. colorata Wall
All three species on which there has been enough discussion in our group were named by N. Wallich, and obviously first illustrated in his Wallich Catalogue, 1812, which being without descriptions were treated as Nomen Nudum unless validated by author himself or some other author. C. pallida Wall, was first validly published in Asiat. Res. 13: 375 (1820), C. colorata Wall. in in W. Roxburgh, Fl. Ind. 2: 101 (1824) and C. cana Wall. in Roxburgh, Fl. Ind. 2: 101. (1824). FBI treated them under two species C. colorata Wall. (syn: C. pallida). However, because of being published earlier, C. pallida gets priority as accepted name over C. colorata.
The two species C. pallida and C. cana, both represented in Western Himalayas can be separated as under as per Eflora of China:
1. C. pallida: Stem single, rarely two or more; leaves hispid, lower often with winged petiole, calyx lobes triangular to subdeltoid, hispid outside, often toothed.
2. C. cana: Stems usually several from base; leaves white soft hairy, lower not with winged petiole, calyx lobes subulate to narrowly triangular, softly hairy outside, usually not toothed.
Here is C. pallida, photographed from Pahalgam, Kashmir, alt. 2400 m, 23-6-2011.

All doubts cleared, Sir
