Diffuse herbs; branches radiating from a perennial stout root stock. Leaves to 1.5 x 0.5 cm, oblanceolate, obtuse, hairy below. Racemes to 6 cm long, terminal; bracts and bracteoles minute. Flowers 10 mm long, yellow; calyx 9 mm long; lobes unequal; standard 8 mm across, orbicular, hairy on back; wings 8 x 3 mm, rugose; keel glabrous. Pods 9 x 3 mm, obovate, glabrous; seeds few.

This species has an extemely wide range. It is native in India, China and many countries in South East Asia from Pakistan to the Philippines and extending south to Papua New Guinea and north to Nepal.
This woody herb is found in dry deciduous and open forests, scrub in jungles and in clearings and open grassland. It is also listed as a weed of rice fields in India (Dubey 2004).
This species is listed as used for medicinal purposes (human as well as veterinary) from a sample site in Andhra Pradesh, India (Shankar et al. 2002). It is recorded as a treatment for warts, especially on the sole of the foot and a juice obtained from the roots is given for indigestion in Nepal (Manandhar and Manandhar 2002).

Crotalaria sp. for ID from Chakrata Tiger fall area
Erect herb nearly 80 cm tall with linear-lanceolate alternate leaves, perhaps 2-3 cm long; flowers yellow, tinged purplish on standard outside, in terminal raceme; pedicel about 6-9 mm long; flower about 1.5-2 cm long, corolla about one and half times as long as calyx; pod somewhat club shaped, broadest at apex, narrowed towards base, almost twice as long as calyx.


It may be Crotalaria montana.

Please review id as C. montana has upper calyx teeth connate at apex and fruit is enclosed or scarcely exserted.


Perhaps it may be Crotalaria linifolia L.


Crotalaria albida (=C.montana) to me which is common in mid hills of Uttarakhand.

It is one of the favourite for tiger butterflies. They suck the juice to get alkaloids. Male butterflies

Pl help me to confirm the ID of the attached Crotalaria sp.
Suggested ID:  Crotalaria albida.
Observed at a height of 600 ft. above MSL., Yellagiri Hills, Tamil Nadu
Much branched shrub of about 45 cms. Leaves simple and linear. Infl terminal  with 6-10 flowers. Corolla Pale yellow.

Its Crotalaria albida var. kangransis

Racemes 5-15-flowered, bracts subulate c 2mm. Calyx 7—10mm, finely appressed pubescent, deeply divided into 5 teeth, upper pair broader, 2.5—3mm broad, lower ones lanceolate, c 1.5mm broad. This may be Crotalaria prostata Rottl.
Ref: Flora of Mah., Vol II pg:42.  Leaves description match: subsessile, oblong or oblong ovate, rounded at the apex, usually oblique or cordate at base. Cannnot make out if surface has  silky yellowish or yellowish brown hair  to match the description but calyx 3-4 mm long densely hairy description matches with first two pic. Small flowers, Corolla yellow not exserted.

On the  https://efloraofindia.com/2011/02/20/crotalaria-linifolia/ page, I see some sets showing obovate leaves while some are linear. Same observed in photos of herbaria in POWO. If C. linifolia has variable leaves, it makes it difficult for me to decide, I will leave it to experts to comment.
